Arrived I onSunday around 1845. Took a few minutes to review the menu and went up to the bar to order. The people in front of use ordered food, so imagine our surprise when we were told the kitchen was closed. Considering that we had walked a mile to this pub bc it was listed on Unilocal as open, we were a bit surprised and disappointed. We enjoyed a lint and headed off back to city center. So, lesson learned, open and still serving food aren’t the same thing. Beware! Atmosphere was very pleasant, and food seemed promised. Alas.

Apart from only serving Prosecco by the bottle which mrs didn’t mind, food was lovely and service with a smile. Lovely place which also has a beer garden for the hot days and warm nights.

Iconic Cardiff pub in a pleasant parkland spot not far from Cardiff Castle, the Mochyn Du is legendary. I won’t mark it down for the nightmarish state of the toilets on the day we visited, because it was straight after a rugby match attended by over 55,000 people, most of whom seemed to have releived themselves at the pub and turned the loos into a veritable river of you-know-what lol! Great watering hole and plenty of parking usually, just not on rugby match days. Highly recommended.

Good food, great beer, and pigs everywhere… what’s not to like? This Cardiff gem is well worth a visit. The name means ‘the black pig’ in Welsh and the pub is decorated appropriately. I got to taste several local ales, all of which were quite nice. Friendly bartenders and great atmosphere.

The Black Pig in English, this pub is probably one of my favorite pubs I’ve ever been to. I went around lunch time so it wasn’t all that busy, but I can tell it would be incredible to be in when it is. It’s a Welsh-language pub so most things are in Welsh and English, and the staff generally speak the language to each other which is great to hear if you’re visiting Cardiff. The selection of beers is great as well. It’s a real ale pub. Also, the locale is incredible. When you walk up to the place you forget that you’re so close to the city. It’s just outside of the park, and looks like a pub out in the country. It’s really a unique experience.

Whenever I’m in Cardiff this is one of the two places I have to visit(the other being the Riverside Cantonese Restaurant). The staff are friendly and attentive, the beer is excellent(if you like real ales try Cwrw), the food is great and it’s a wonderful walk through the park in to the city center. If you’re visiting Cardiff it’s worth a meander through scenic Bute Park to Y Mochyn Du and it’s usually less crowded being slightly out of the main city center.

This is such a lovely pub with a fantastic location by the park. They serve four Welsh bEers and I had a top pint of Cwrw from the West Glamgorgan brewery. They are very much about the Welshness of it all! I wanted to stay longer but inexplicably they turned off the Prem football and switched on a program that seemed to be 3 people with thicker necks than heads talking about two non Welsh rugby teams who were playing later. I know they love their oval balls in Wales but this still seemed a bit ridiculous. Unfortunately the screen is in the nicest part of the pub so while you can avoid it it does mean sitting in a slightly less charming location. Shouldn’t complain too much though seriously lovely place

Welshalicious! This is a fantastic eatery. Light and airy inside with a lovely outdoors space, it serves amazing local food at decent prices. The lamb joint was particularily yummy, and you can’t be in Wales and not get rarebit, a fantastic snack with a cuppa on a wet afternoon.

This is a great little place to take people who are visiting Wales. I always offer this suggestion to my visitors as it gives them a taste of the Welsh language without it being forced down you. The pub is in a beautiful location in Sophia Gardens, offers decent car parking and delivers everything you expect from a pub. The ales on offer are first class, my new favourite was a special for the recent Ryder Cup, appropriately named ‘Tiger Would’. The price range is certainly not cheap and cheerful but it won’t break the bank either. The food is absolutely delicious and recommended. Keep an eye on the specials board as it often contains little gems. I always find the place to be clean, the service first class and all in all, this is a great little establishment.

Not only does Cardiff boast an expansive park that is like a countryside oasis in the bustling city, but it has its own country pub! Y Mochyn Du is a pub of two halves. To one side is an old fashioned, beamed pub with nooks and crannies and fireplaces, to the other a large open conservatory with tables and lots of light. And all entered through a cute little ‘ye olde’ mock Tudor frontage. And a beer garden to boot. This pub is well known as being a great supporter of the Welsh language, but not in a cliquey, anti English sort of way. I’ve not eaten in here, but the real ales are always a draw for me.

The Mochyn Du is a fantastic pub perfectly situated for a pint and maybe some food after a wander round the expansive parks nearby. I always go here after a bike ride along the Taff Trail to completely counter act all the exercise I’ve just done with a few pints and some food. A broad range of people frequent the Mochyn Du and from the outside it’s got a picturesque almost fairy-tale like vibe about it, with more traditional fare adorning the walls inside. It’s fairly well sized with a large beer garden and seating at the front aswell. The menu is in both English and Welsh and is extremely well priced for what you get. I had a panini and a pint for about a fiver here. It’s one of the posher pubs in the area, being in the relatively upmarket area of Pontcanna but it’s not snobby in any way inside and I find it to be a pretty cosy, welcoming pub, ideal whether it’s a nice, sunny day or it’s freezing outside and you’re looking for something to warm your cockles.

I love Y Mochyn Du, living with two girls that study Welsh it is a great place and I always think it’s cool watching the girls order in Welsh and having a bit of banter with the staff. My parents live in Somerset and this pub really does have a countryside vibe as it is situated right next to Bute Park. Some would describe this place as posh but I would consider more picturesque and is very much the pub you would go to, to have a proper pub lunch with a couple of pints followed by a nice walk in the park.

The Mochyn Du is a very picturesque looking pub from the outside but does the atmosphere, interior décor and service live up to its exterior? In a word no — but that not a negative and it comes close. To me the outside can be likened to that of a fairy tale cottage A La Hansel and Gretel and so it conjures up an image that is near enough unsurpassable. So if you’re a tourist in this country I’d say this is probably the quaintest picture you will ever take of traditional British pub. Having said that do take yourself inside especially during a Welsh international rugby game that will be televised on one of the many screens inside. If you can put up with the bustle then you will enjoy the atmosphere in this very pro Welsh enclave. Even if you’re not into watching sport then there will probably be enough room in the outside areas front and back.

This is a great Pontcanna pub that’s particularly popular with media types(many from the BBC) and Welsh speakers, although it’s not too cliquey so other people will feel perfectly welcome as well! The Mochyn Du(or ‘Black Pig’, in English) is situated right by Bute Park, and with its own beer garden this makes it a convenient spot for an afternoon pint on a sunny day after a wander around the park. Inside, the pub has a contemporary, open-plan area on one side, and a cosier area on the other with a fireplace. It gets very busy when there’s a rugby match on, when the atmosphere is usually pretty lively — while at other times it’s a bit more sedate!

I’ve never been to this place while it’s been too busy, as I imagine it can get a tad over whelming. On one side of the pub, there is a cosy area with little cubby holes and fireplaces to create an air of intimacy. On the other side you are faced with a more open-plan and modern offering; the pub was refurbished a couple of years ago to, I would expect, keep up with the demand for space. Y Mochyn Du is situated near Pontcanna, which is an upmarket area of Cardiff near the centre, which is fairly well known for its Welsh speakers and artsy BBC Wales types. This being said, the pub has a massive range of customers who frequent regularly, so most people will feel welcome, whatever their preference of company. The food here is generally good, although I got a little bit confused by their interpretation of bara brith. Good value for money and tasty faggots, a bit of a winner.

There’s nothing I like more than a walk in Bute park followed by a pint in the beer garden at the Mochyn Dy(thats The Black Pig for any non Welshy’s). I admittedly prefer the outside to the inside, but anyway that sells real ales is a definite winner with me. I had a works dinner here once, so it can cater for bigger groups as well as having little nooks for a more intimate drink. The food was OK, nothing amazing but good enough pub grub. I also love that it caters for Welsh speakers, its great for my friends to be able to order in their own language, and would be great for any visitors to mingle with the locals.

I’ve really wanted to go to this pub for a long time after being told about it by Welsh friends. It seemed to be a more genuinely Welsh pub. Some places like this can become… a little like an Irish pub in Spain… But this pub is actually really lovely. And really friendly, which would be the only other worry. You hear a lot of stories about Welsh-English/non-Welsh drama. To be honest, though, I’ve never found this to be true. Anyway, this pub is great for going to on a sunny day, enjoying a drink with a group of friends and reveling in the friendly, lively atmosphere of a rugby match.

Quint old fashoned/olde worlde sitauted a mere 5 – 10 minutes away from the hustle of Cardiff City Centre. Easily walkable to reach either by going down Cathedral Road & turning into Sophia Close or via a quick shortcut through Bute Park at the side of Cardiff Castle, across the foot bridge over the river and into Sophia Gardens(near the new Swalec Stadium). Externally the building reminded me of a village tavern. Inside is a little more modern, with a giant painting of the pubs’ namesake(the black pig) and some rugby photos(like the one of Ieuan Evans in a black and white photo mock up of a late 1800s style rugby player.) The pub has a big screen, so lends it itself to rugby & football match days. Also has a selection of real ales. I had a rather nice pint of Cwrw Gaeaf on draught in my visit. There is food on offer too, although I went on match day and it was limited to hot meat filled rolls, I assume they do regular meals on non-match days. The pub also has a beer garden out the front of the premises too. In all it is a nice cosy little pubs and is worth seeking out and popping in for a visit.
