The Waterloo makes quite a name for itself at the weekend, where it hosts many LBGT friendly nights, and get the thumbs up from many friends who love a bit of clubbing here. It’s got a diverse range of music and nights on the go, including(don’t know if this is still a thing) an evening where only hits from The Smiths are played. If I’ve missed the boat on this one I’ll be gutted, sounded great! I’ve only ever been here on its slightly more low key week nights after work. It’s a lovely bar, with friendly staff, friendly clientele and a good atmosphere. It’s one of these bars I always love when I pay a visit — good vibes, good music, good people — as I write this I realise I need to go here more! I’ve heard their club nights are outstanding so I’ll be trying one of those soon!

On our first day in Glasgow, my uncle and I were looking to have a gay olé’ time so I happily accompanied him on a gay bar crawl. First up, the famous Waterloo. From what I hear it’s the oldest gay bar in town and it certainly seemed popular with older gents. The clientele were all obviously regulars, and no one seemed very interested in meeting us new kids. Our visit was mostly uneventful, but before we moved on I treated myself to Toilets: The Ride. Yes, the toilet was not fastened securely to the floor which made for some unexpected excitement. You gotta get your kicks where you can.

So The Waterloo Bar? A pretty inconspicuous bar name, not that it makes a difference but I wouldn’t normally choose a gay bar first and foremost out of everywhere I could possibly go. But this time it was not my choice, it was a gay friend of mines birthday and this was the first stop off. I must say gay club/straight club they are pretty much the same in every way, except from the act that there were boys dancing and looking pretty in their groups, and the girls were a bit short back and sides. We had loads of fun, and happily I received many a compliment from gentlemen completely disinterested in me, many to do with my hair, face, complexion. I was spoiled with flattery, how lovely.

The Waterloo was one of the first pubs that I visited in Glasgow’s town centre. The bar staff were lovely, and the clientele is a broad mixture of youngsters getting ready for a night out and older, more sedate gentlemen settling in for the evening. Close to Central train Station, and at the foot of the city centre, it is as useful for a long session as it is as a starting point for a big night out. It is pretty busy at all times of day, with constant music– usually leading to some ill-judged dancing by the younger men– and, as the previous review noted, few women. It is one of the classic gay pubs of the city, set apart from the so-called pink triangle but ideal for meeting or getting a taste of the Glasgow scene.
