Went out of our way to visit here and wasn’t disappointed. A tiny, tiny shop that we actually walked past twice before we realized we had passed it. Filled with authentic candies and specialty foods from Britain. Excellent burnt sugar toffee.

I don’t understand why this place isn’t rated higher, considering previous reviews haven’t said a bad word about it, except perhaps regards price. I ventured in for lunch for the first time today, as I usually breeze past and on into Verde & Company next door. I went for the duck and gooseberry sandwich on wholemeal bread and bought a flapjack on impulse. In comparison, these guys don’t pack in nearly as much filling as Verde & Co, but it tastes just as good. In fact, I’d say marginally better since A Gold doesn’t go crazy with the sauces as their neighbours seem to. I find that too much sometimes. Price-wise, £5 for a very good quality duck sandwich and £1.50 for a tasty flapjack is on the premium end of the scale, but it’s not extortionate and you can expect to get what you pay for. I’ll be back, for sure. But for me, the extra filling Verde & Company pack in will see me pay them a visit first.

I like a place that’s named after me. I like it even more when it serves up fabulous sandwiches and melt-in-the-mouth brownies. You heard me! These are something special. I wondered in here to get some lunch and was a little confused. It’s tiny, crammed full of people and there are 2 people making sandwiches in different places and one lady taking money. Everywhere I stand I fear for the jars of mustard and pickle that line the shelves around me. This deli is getting me excited, just the cheese and pté and pickle and bread and everything else delicious looking on the menu and in the fridge is calling out to me. At £4.20 a sarnie though, it’s a price to pay but oh so worth it. Only take out available but you place your order at the till you get a number and then wait for yours to be made. This takes some time. Don’t come here if you are in a rush. Now to the important part, the brownie. Less chocolaty and more caky, I received a warning on its moorishness when purchasing it. «I’m a brownie expert» I puffed up at the till. «This will be the best brownie you have ever tasted,» she assures me as she pops my large brown wedge of treat into a paper bag. By the time I have left the shop, buttery fat has already seeped through the bag. Things are looking good! With walnuts and a crispy edge, it was TODIEFOR. I cut it in half to save a bit for later but after the first half I gave up and finished the whole thing. Mmmm… I was born to be on the larger side, that is why I love brownies so much. It’s in my genes.

A. Gold is a really nice, rustic feeling food shop. It has spreads, honey, olives and miscellaneous other organic and locally sourced products for sale. This shop overflows with good gift material. If you need to find a present for someone who’s into culinary delights then you’ll definitely tickle their senses if you buy something from this place. No item in here is cheap though, so expect to pay up to £3.50 for a jar of jam.

A. Gold’s is a funny little shop by Spitalfields market which calls itself a grocers although is really more of a food boutique. By this I mean, don’t expect to do your weekly shop here. Ask the staff if they have any fruit in and expect to be pointed to a solitary apple gleaming on the shelf. This apple will be the worlds best apple and every surface of it will shine like the moon on a blue lagoon. Still, it is apple and its going to cost you five times more than you’d be at your local fruit and veg shop. However, if your shopping requirements are a bit more limited and your looking for a foody type gift then A. Gold’s is a good bet. The shop stocks real old fashioned treats like dandelion and burdock soda and sweets that your Granny would love. Their sandwiches are very good and nothing like you would find in Tesco’s. Duck and goosebury anyone? I’d definitely say A. Gold’s is worth a visit but only for a couple of specialist items. It would hit your wallet hard to try and do a ‘big shop’ here and you would end up with cupboards full of things you’ve never heard of!

This is a shop specializing in British Food and has the best selection of well packaged albeit strange«traditional» foods . The shop is filled with wooden shelves and old tin cake tins and porcelain teacups — muffins, scones and breads — They have a sandwich business during the day and sell there wonderful food things all year round. Things like«gentlemens relish» at £2.25 sounds lovely and is actually anchovy paste — follow this with«The Distinguished Recipe of Geo Watkins „try his „Mushroom Ketchup“ or „Harvey sauce“. The place also has a great selection of preserves in glass jars with little handkerchiefs — A nice place for a sandwich or to buy that special someone who has everything but possibly does not have“ The Distinguished Recipe of Anchovy Sauce»
