I LOVE this place. Of course, take my American review for what it is… perhaps I’ve never had REAL english sausages until now. I adore everything about this quaint little place. Our party of 3 had sausages of 3 different types with mushy peas, beans, and fried mushrooms. Perhaps I was just happy to have British fare on my British holiday.

I can’t say i’m a fan of this place. I’ve been here twice due to the fact my friend loves this place. It’s not bad really. just i’m not a bangers and mash kinda girl. I would rather eat my toe jams on a hot and sticky day. So the menu is limited for those like us that would rather not have a fry up for lunch. Both times i’ve been i’ve had a baked potatoe which I paid 6 pounds for. I’m pretty sure I can get a bag of them for a quid! he he. Service is okay. First time I came, they were fast and friendly. Second time, we couldn’t get noticed.

I had bangers and mash. A friend had waffles, eggs and bangers. Two different types of bangers — neither of which were particularly appealing. Hard, and not particularly tasty. Waffle was rather unexciting, and the scrambled eggs was a rather unappealing mess. Nor did the mash hold up to my mother’s. I’m sorry — I think this place is a little hyped — perhaps there’s a tourist excited about having some pukka English food — but but seriously, it’s not.

Kudos: –Not going overboard with quips and jokes on the menu or décor as related to their cheeky name –Having a large breakfast selection, including waffles(an entire waffles section, no less), fry up, eggs benedict and VEGGIE fry up –Good, friendly service –Free wifi –Close to Leadenhall Market and the Rich Mix for a pre– or post-dining walk and shop/indie movie screening Major Kudos: –Music selection! Fantastic mix of early-mid sixties American and Brit pop and rock … which then segued into ‘80s hits. Amazing –Honoring our Taste London card, even though we didn’t call ahead(netting us a 2 for 1 deal!) –Vegetarian options! –Serving breakfast all day –Milkshakes, smoothies and booze on the menu. Husband gets to satisfy his sweet tooth and i get to indulge my booze … tooth Sad to report: The Bloody Mary wasn’t very good. Possibly pre-mixed and came with two sad little ice cubes that melted immediately and no garnish. I requested extra ice(which made me feel like a picky American, but I just had to) and the server was happy to oblige(relieving me of feeling like a jerk) but then reported they were out of ice. Damn. Just Sayin: I’m quite curious about the upstairs area that appears to be set up as a bar/lounge. I already planned to go back anytime for lunch or to try the breakfast, and now will plan to check it out in the evening time and to see if it gets hopping upstairs.

I am back for lunch and it was delish! I had their sausages and mash and my friend had their pie. I have to say their sausages are not the best, but the mash is very smooth, buttery and tasty. Their pie is definitely stands out out of everything else. It’s flaky top piece, it’s juicy and savory center, it’s meaty chucks, combine everything and you get the best pie _ever_. It has outdoor seatings also, which is perfect for this current weather. This is a tiny restaurant, very cozy and lay back. I love it. The End.

S&M cafes offer a selection of sausages, mash and gravy: good, filling food at reasonable(albeit not cheap) prices. There are other menu options, but I’ve always stuck to the basics! The surroundings are deliberately informal, and there are some nice touches such as the choice of mustards on each table. My experience of this branch is that the service is particularly friendly and good. No S&M branch is a place to go for formal dining, but they do bangers and mash consistently well. Although you pay more than at the greasy spoon, quality and ambience are better too.

Disappointing, find this to be a tourist trap with mediocre food and high prices. I’ve been here twice – thinking the first unpleasant experience a fluke – and both times was not pleased. Runny eggs, small portions(compared to the prices), room temperature food, and snotty service on both occasions(about 3 months apart) did not endear me to this establishment. I’ve heard good reviews a while ago, so I wonder if they have changed chefs or management recently. Best to venture a few blocks away East to the local cafes for proper comfort food.

I think the reviews on this place speak for themselves really. Our food was lovely, i had fish and chips with mushy peas, and it was just good hearty grub! I particularly loved the chips so much so that i complimented the waiter who turned out to be the owner(possibly the manager, but im sure it was the owner!). He was lovely and started telling us how they came to making these style of chips. I thought it was really sweet and personal, and made me totally forget about the wrong bill we received!

Sausages. Order the sausages. Great place to have a cuppa and a chinwag or recover from a hang over.

Who’d have thought vegetarians would one day devour a good dollop of potato mash with a heartiful sausage nestled in the middle. OK not a real one but the soy version comes pretty close I am told. I took my brother here for his birthday when it first opened and we were more than content with reading the words ‘vegetarian sausage’. It was one of the few places — aside from Ikeas infamous veggie hotgdogs — that offered this fine delicacy. Near Liverpool street station in the heart of Spitalfields Market, its great for lunch and late night nosh. I’d like to thank the S&M café for their inclusive dining policy allowing me to scoff back at those smug meaty sausage lovers.

When I said I was going to have some S&M the other Thursday I had to make the qualification that it was sausage and mash. The S&M café serves good old fashioned cockney stodge, even the menu has a picture of the Krays on it. The Cumberland sausage ring is spot on although I have had better mash elsewhere which accounts for the three star showing for this venue.

I’ve never been drawn by S&M, despite being a huge fan of the meal itself. But, yesterday I found myself here and couldn’t help but be charmed. We didn’t have sausage and mash though. Oh no, roast dinners for us please! We had to wait a while, but we’d walked around the markets with a hankering for a roast dinner. We weren’t going to be swayed. So, we were told there would be a wait and we waited. The staff we polite, they didn’t mind us taking up the table and the wait was only about 15 minutes. And it was mostly yummy. The peas were tinned, which annoyed me. But everything else was yummy. My roast beef was more rare than my friends, so I lucked out, but it was all very very tasty. And less than a tenner too. But it’s the service here that really impressed me. Friendly, fun, and just the right side of attentive. We were looked after without feeling like the staff we pushing for a tip. I enjoyed myself here, I had yummy food and left full and happy. Aside from the tinned peas, all was perfect.

This little café is great if you are craving proper British stodge and gravy, the prices are great and the food is fuss-free. Most people come for the sausage and mash although I would also recommend it for its breakfast’s. That’s the great thing about sausage’s, you can eat them at every time of day! Be warned though, this is not the sort of place to visit if you don’t have much of an appetite, the portions are seriously huge. My boyfriend ordered beans on the side of his bacon and eggs and they might as well just have presented him with a family sized tin of Heinz. S&M is also great for family’s as children really love the fun of mixing and matching the various sausage and mash combinations. Having said that, I took a friend who was 32 and he liked it just as much. S&M in a nutshell, wholesome, honest and delicious!

It’s obvious from the name ‘Sausage and Mash’ that this is your traditional British food. Simple but very effective. You should expect all of the Great British foods that as a student I always looked froward to going home for. The Full English is no less than brilliant and they have other dishes like Shepherds pie. All of the puddings are just as good-apple pie and spotted dick, it basically offers all the great food this country invented and made popular that has sadly gone out of fashion with many other cafes and high street shops. Their red and white striped outdoor cover is reminiscent of the the old local butcher’s traditional exterior and there’s a warm and friendly interior that has the charm of a good old greasy spoon but with a bit more class. This is such a great place but if you’re a veggie don’t expect too much!

Delivering only no-fuss comfort food is what the S&M café does best. Its red and white checked table clothes accurately complements its menu. The S&M café delivers all of the traditional British café requirements with a more modern-day approach. This café shows that simple British food can be a bit stodgy, but always delicious and satisfying

The home of comfort food, the rather dubiously named S & M Café is located a stones throw away from the world famous Spitalfield market. Half Parisian bistro and half English greasy spoon, S & M is the place to come if you’re in need of good cheer. This place focuses on simplicity — you get your sausage and you get your mash there’s not much else to it. However there is an ever-changing range of the two and they even cater to the vegetarians amongst us. The place has a really lively and vibrant atmosphere and can get very crowded so it’s not necessarily the place for a romantic gettogether. The prices are fairly reasonable though it’s proabably more expensive that most sausage ‘n’ mash’s you’ve had in the past. Attention mash lovers, the future is now.

Brushfield Street’s S&M Café is handily located across the road from Spitalfields Market, just a short stroll from Liverpool Street Station. A classically British café with the idiosyncrasy and charm of a ‘Greasy Spoon’ and the professionalism of a burgeoning chain, S&M excels in serving comfort food such as sausage and mash — rather than sadomasochism, hence the name — good old fashioned fry-ups and puddings such as Eton Mess. Predictably perhaps, S&M’s vegetarian options are thin on the ground and staff can be a little slow. Regardless, S&M Brushfield Street is a no brainer for simple, tasty comfort food at very reasonable prices.
