Well an establishment I have been lucky enough to have known about and visited for over 20 years… from boy to man! This venue exudes charm, it is wonderfully civilised and yet remarkably relaxed, cosmopolitan but rustic, all in all, one delightful package. It is the epitome of London at its best maybe even Great Britain at its best, traditional, distinctive, charming and warm. Unbelievably I had never visited this wonderful haunt on a Sunday before, but on a stunning sunny afternoon I decided to revert to type and part-take of the ever impressive cheese board and kegged port for my Sunday repast, My cohorts were Gordon’s virgins but the look of surprise and wonder at the superb service, convivial atmosphere and superb comestibles left them, and I, with a smile on our faces, what more could you want… as ever Bravo!

Decent selection of wine, cured meats, and cheese. If you don’t mind the long queues for food, drinks, and seats, then this place is awesome. The pickled vegetables are the best!

Nice and cozy little bar with a huge collection of all kids of wine. They also offer some pretty good cheese and small meals to accompany your wine. Also they have a grill outside that serves sandwiches and chips. You can decide if you sit inside downstairs in the old vaulted cellar or enjoy the park atmosphere outside.

It was hard for me to figure out what I was supposed to do when I walked in, but after we scored some seats at a shared table it got a lot easier. We met a ton of people just by chatting with them. Super friendly clientele. Heavy pours of good wine. No cell service or wi fi. Fun cave vibe.

I haven’t been here for years but still remember it. My friend was seeing me off for a flight. He was a jerk. We drank 3 bottles of wine and had great cheeses with them. Wish I could have that moment back for a day.

Great ambience. Check out the underground seating. Get some cheese and bread and enjoy your wine by candlelight. Great prices too

I don’t like wine and I LOVE this place. It’s easy to miss from the outside because of its cruddy-looking façade, but once you step inside, you really feel(and smell) just how old this place is. This place is cosy, the caves really create a great atmosphere and according to my friends who do drink there, the wine is great! The outdoor area is also buzzing. It’s definitely worth a visit and especially as a tourist looking to visit a historical(it’s the oldest wine bar in London), not as touristy site. If you want to sit in the cave area, book well in advance though.

I’m from Los Angeles and was in London for New Years. As I was mingling with some Londoners at a NYE party I asked someone what is something that I can NOT miss while I’m in London. They thought about it for a moment and told me I must check out Gordon’s Wine Bar. Well throughout the night 3 other people gave me the exact same recommendation! Well of course had to try it! Right of the bat, it was an amazing location right next to the tube stop. And then I go inside and there’s a fucking underground wine cellar with only candle light??? I have never been to anything like this and the ambience was too cool to wrap my mind around. A bottle of wine later and it got even cooler. The people next to us didn’t want the rest of their wine and cheese and if you can think of one thing better than free wine and cheese than I’ll be god-damned. Anyways, it was just all around an amazing unique cool night and I can’t wait to go back next time I’m in London.

TLDR: Food under the heat lamps look unappetizing and dry, it’s super crowded(like overly crowded), and if you’re inside it’s loud and hot. If you’re outside without a heat lamp, it’s cold. The service is non existent. Smokers everywhere. Really cool spot. If you’re cool with all of the above and are lucky enough to snag a seat inside, the ambiance of this place is simply awesome. The deeper you got into the cellar, the darker it is AND it’s a freaking cave! The caverns are stunningly beautiful. Met a couple friends here while waiting to kill time. What better place to come than London’s oldest wine bar? None of the food piqued my interest so I got a cheese plate with brie, chevre,(was in the mood for soft cheeses), a couple extra loaves of bread, loaded up on the cornichons, arugula, and asked for oil and balsamic which made this the perfect snack. The cheese was perfect and delicious. There were six of us. Since we didn’t find seats inside(womp), we stood around a standing barrel table. I’d suggest a seat inside the cellar if you can, it totally makes the experience. If not, it’s still a great time. If wine is your thing, the list is extensively extensive.

Deemed to one of London oldest wine bars, this places reputation proceeds itself. Very popular with tourists, but mainly local business people after work, it can get extremely busy. Inside its set in a dark cellar and serves up some nice salads and cheese plates and outside there is a huge long space that runs parallel with a park. Perfect for the summer, if you can squeeze in. Also great if you want an affordable glass of wine and sells many half bottles to start your night off.(Visit — 03/08/2015 Evening Drinks)

This is a great place to loose all sense of time and place, drinking wines and eating cheese, in the cellars of an old Westminster building. The place is dark, very underground, candle lit, very nice atmosphere(if you like this kind of places that is). You have to get your eyes adjusted and walk deeper into the cellar to find out that there is more space. The extensive wine list is probably enough reason to get there in the first place. They have their own produced wine as well. Prices are very reasonable. The food is presented on a buffet and you can choose what you want, cheese comes per piece and it is nice to choose 3 on a plate with some bread, accompanying your wine. You have to pick the food up yourself, no table service. It always seems to be busy and it might be difficult to find a table/seats although there is a nice vibe and visitors are generally fine with sharing a(corner of their) table. Easy to spend a whole afternoon here and then crawl out and find out it is still light outside, I love it!

Getting a seat here is like trying to break into Fort Knox, HOWEVER, it’s worth persevering and even standing, if you have to, because the wine and cheese here is THAT good. Also, because I’m secretly 89 years old, the selection of sherry and port on offer really speaks to me. The cheese is clearly labelled as to what’s veggie friendly and what isn’t, which is a nice touch, if you’re trying to avoid rennet then you’ll have a clear idea of what you can and can’t have on your platter. I can’t decide whether the atmosphere/mood/lighting is more like sitting in a wine cellar or a dungeon? It’s pretty dark/dingy, but part of me really likes that, as I feel like a 17th century smuggler having a secret meeting, as I brood over my glass of sherry… I mean my glass of whatever it is that youths drink these days. Ahem. Also, if your date’s a minger then I’d recommend bring them here, because you won’t be able to see them, haha. Seriously though. Wine and cheese — is there really anything else that needs to be said? Might be worth going all European and turning up an hour before it opens to lay your coat on the seat you want to sit on for the evening…

great summery mood and choice of wines. You can sit outside near barrels or at the tables, or choose to go inside for a more romantic evening(it’s like a cave) Great!

Obligatory tourist place if you like a) historic things b) wine c) caves. Yes. If you want to try something different… It’s the thing to do. My friend sent me a list of must dos… The wine here starts at 5.5 pounds. Lots on the list. We also got marinated olives. Olives were like another 3 pounds but good since I was drinking at 2 pm with having eaten nothing. Sure there are lovely wine rooms but this place was awesome. Oh they serve food but didn’t try it. Honestly didn’t look that good.

I don’t like wine. Let’s start there. So this place isn’t the best choice for me. I came her with my parents, they love it here, I don’t. The food is okay. You pick your meat and then you fill your plate with a few different types of salady stuff. Nothing special. i wish I’d got the cheese board as that actually did looked yummy. We were sat outside. It’s hard to get a seat here so we thought on how lucky to get a table. Well… not that lucky, we were sat next to a motley crew of lads shouting laughing and downing bottles of wine. I could happily never return to Gordon’s Wine Bar, my parents however love it. They like wine and they like the food for its price. So that probably sums up this place pretty well.

Great little place, it’s like a cave, with the added bonus of booze, well, wine, and a great selection of wine I might add. Lots of outside space on the terrace so although inside is packed, there’s still somewhere to go. Very close to the tube(embankment) and a lovely Park with its entrance from the terrace, although no booze allowed in the park. Good place for a date or romantic evening.

It took London to get really scorching for me to properly appreciate this place. Find a spot in their vast outside area, get one of their well chosen bottles of wine and a plate of bread and slab of cheese, all within a minute of Charing Cross and at fairly reasonable prices. Considering. There was a BBQ with some mean looking steak that the wine was just begging for too. I could not design it better.

Oh I love this place! Can it get busy? Yes! But is it worth it? Most definitely! An array of wines to choose from and outdoor seating(or cool cavernous seating inside). Also, if you’re feeling peckish, there is always the meat and cheese platter on offer. If you haven’t been here to sample the delights of this wine bar, then go! They only have water and juice as soft drinks so don’t expect choice there — rightly so, it is a wine bar after all

I enjoyed my time at Gordon’s Wine Bar. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I am not necessarily a cheese and wine expert and I felt out of my depth. However, they were very helpful with helping me match my cheeses to my wines. I was smitten with the kir royale! We sat in the cellar, which was a very unique experience. While it was a beautiful day, I strongly suggest trying this out. In the middle of the day, here we are in a space relying on candlelight. It felt very exclusive and was a nice break from the bustle of the day. My only complaint is that the tables and chairs were pretty wobbly, and I had to make sure my food and my wife didn’t go toppling over. This slightly took away from the experience. Also, it would be nice if there were more menus so we could bring one back to the table to browse. They serve some hot food up until a certain time, but we were more interested in wine and cheese. With the cheese plate, you get bread and your choice of sides like onion chutney and raspberry jam. Also, the cheese servings are EXTREMELY generous compared to the pittance you get at many places in the States. Again, the woman behind the counter was able to recommend what would work best with the cheese I had selected. I didn’t feel foolish or out of place in asking. So definitely give this place a try. For us it was going to be a short visit, then more exploring the area before we had dinner and a show. But we got stuck and replaced sightseeing with a tour for our tastebuds.

This is the cutest little spot and the perfect place for all you wine lovers out there. You sit in little nooks cut out of the rock under Villiers street and the wine list is extensive and impressive. Not bad prices either. This is a popular place though so be warned… if you want a seat in those nooks… get there early or be prepared to stand around(whilst trying the amazing wines of course) until one becomes available. One work of warning: those fancying a beer are advised to go elsewhere. The barmen get hugely offended if you even ask for one! PS they do yummy cheese too. Obv :)

Life is beautiful isn’t it?

Un bar a vin! Un vrai! A londres!
