Quite simply, this is my favourite pub in Mere Green. Based in a former Victorian school building the interior is grand and spacious, and the high ceilings give the place a real sense of splendour. The décor is equally elegant. The best thing about the Old Speckled Hen is its substance over style. Yes, it looks great but the place still manages to be a proper little pub and that’s what counts. The drinks are great and reasonably priced. However, you’ll pay more for food than the Wetherspoon’s round the corner, but then again the food is pure gastro pub of an impressive quality. Also, the Old Speckled Hen is a pub for all seasons. The paved garden area is truly lovely, and it’s a real pleasure to sip a drink surrounded by the mature majestic trees on a summer’s afternoon after work. But, I also love to sit inside on a winter’s evening, curling up in one of the big armchairs next to the roaring fireplace.
