La Candela

Several times I tried to give it a second chance., but unfortunately Candela shows the absolute absence of service. You can wait 30 min for the menu, that another 30 to have you glass of wine… No way. Especially in summer. Although the food is ok, I would prefer other places, where waiters treat me well.

Very nice breakfast. Small and cozy. The coffee is also very good and very welcoming staff.

My father and I each enjoyed a three-​course lunch with beers for just 25 Euros. The food (penne, roast beef, sea bass) was quite good and the service was excellent.

I just returned to my flat after having dinner here tonight.
Food was average. The menu didn’t have the items pictured here except for the potatoes and they were more like cold, deep fat fried, potato peels. I had the fries, meat, wine and dessert which came to € 30. Service was average for Barcelona. My meal ended with a rude/​aggressive encounter with a man standing at the bar who was friends with the staff. (Although I don’t believe the staff knew what happened.) Unpleasantness was due to me being American. (Which was particularly unsettling after the massacre in Paris this weekend.) Being a lone diner, I paid my bill and left. Won’t be returning during the rest of my stay.

We stopped here for lunch today and it was delicious — asparagus soup, followed by roast beef with a chimichurri sauce. Both were perfect portion sizes, not too heavy on the stomach! Rounded off the meal with a chocolate brownie and mango syrup and a beer for the great price of € 12.50! There is a set menu each day with only a few choices for each course however there was a vegetarian option available. The restaurant is in a lovely setting in a picturesque square, with plenty of outdoor seating. Would definitely visit again!

This place is exactly what it should be, no more no less. It’s a small bar serving inside and to the square of Placa de St Pere. Two of us stopped here for breakfast, sat at the bar inside, and got coffee, tea, croissants, pan amb tomaquet, and zumos. The orange juice was fresh squeezed, but somehow not as flavorful as I would have expected? The coffee was fine (but bistro-​standard too-​hot), the croissants were tough. Perhaps breakfast did not show La Candela in its best light… we’ll try again later at night for tapas and drinks!

A hidden gem! For 12.50 € you get an appetizer, entrée, dessert, and a drink. I had the pumpkin curry soup, the fish entrée, and carrot cake. And a glass of wine :) Everything was amazing!!! Each item was full of flavor and the ingredients worked well together. I will definitely be back!

I enjoyed a quick meal at this neighborhood tapas spot. I went with the tuna tataki and the chicken wings, and both were quite tasty.

The food here was just «okay» and way over priced for what you got. Also, they charge you an additional € 2 for eating outside. I would never eat there again. Staff spoke English and were friendly.

Pretty little place with outside tables in a small square. Great for a small stop, a drink and some people watching. Try the French toast with cinnamon ice cream… it’s a delight

One of those rare places in Barcelona that serves meals as well as tapa! We enjoyed the blini with octopus as a starter but the cheese stuffed mushrooms were pretty tasteless (undercooked). For mains had the green risotto and the cod which were both very tasty.

Pues yo pensaba que había hecho un comentario también (me remito a Fer: P) pero se ve que no… Ahí va:
Un lugar con encanto donde los haya. En una plazita que si no eres curioso es muy probable que te la pierdas. Es idílico para mi este espacio: la iglesia, las palomas y los tres bares que hay alrededor, es muy pintoresco y bucólico (aunque no haya exactamente campo: P) —
El bar lo conozco de hace tiempo y me encanta por todo esto, sin embargo es muy muy pequeño, por eso es chulo disfrutar de la terraza si hace bueno.
Una de las camareras (argentina) a veces es maja a veces es seria. Apuestan por tenerlo todo «sano» cosa que me gusta. Le pedí el otro día un café con leche de soja y me dijo que como ya se dieron cuenta de que la soja era transgénica pues que ahora utilizaban de avena. Total, muy en el tema. Sin embargo, no os penséis, aunque apuesten por lo sano yo un Croissant me lo comí a gusto!!! jejeje, no significa que no tengan dulces.
Cuando comí allí la comida era realmente deliciosa y muy bien hecha. Ah!!! no os de miedo ir en grupo porque aunque sea pequeño, si reservais o llamáis seguro os pueden poner a dentro. Os digo es pequeño pero yo a comer fui en grupo grande y estuvimos muy agusto.
Vamos, uno de esos rinconcitos de Barcelona que son muy agradables de encontrar.
Por cierto, me dijo que en breve harían obras y que cerrarían por una semana, me gustará verlo cuando esté hecho!!! no sé muy bien qué es lo que van a hacer pero volveré a verlo. De mientras, no os asustéis si pasáis y lo veis cerrado ;)

What a treat! The meal was incredible and the service great. Well worth seeking out if you are visiting Segrada Familia. Starters of zucchini velouté with arugula and a duck and shiitake pasta. Both fantastic. Duck confit with roasted pear entrée was wonderful and the lightly seared tuna entrée was perfectly rare. With dessert or coffee it was a perfect meal with a great bottle of wine and a couple beers for under € 50. They had 3 selections for each course. Dog friendly (made us wish our pooch stowed away). Great little hidden-​away place that I hesitate to share because it’s so perfect.

Anda que no se está agustito en la terraza de La Candela. Nunca he estado dentro, pero es muy acogedor y todo está muy limpio (pequeñito por eso). La verdad que de la carta poco he probado. Sólo he ido a tomar cañitas, aceitunas y una especie de patatas bravas que las presentan de una manera muy curiosa (la salsa de tomate que ponen me chifla).

This place is right next to the apartment that I’m staying in so it’s a great stop for me before I go out or after when I’m on my way home. I ordered the green salad but I asked for tuna on top and the tuna they put on it was incredibly delicious. It was raw marinated tuna and it made the salad 100 times better even though the salad itself was already beautiful. I like this place because it’s mostly locals, not very touristy, and so I feel like I’m living part of the Barcelona life. The staff are great– very friendly and attentive. Only thing that disappointed me was that they were out of croquetas two days in a row.

Love this place! Girls who work here are a bit «Girl Interrupted» but it’s super charming & delicious! Dine outdoors. One particular waitress is very grouchy but the other is sweet. None the less, you should definitely go!

The hostess was rude and she complained about my friend in Spanish.
The food took incredibly long and we were so tired after walking and getting lost in the Gothic area, looking for a Chinese dim sum place.
Despite all these shortcomings, they were the best unplanned restaurant in our Barcelona trip.
The seating outside was plentiful, the locals milled about the bar and basked in the night air and the tourists were encouraged to sit inside. The restaurant is charming, and the Catalan cuisine is locally sourced.
We tried the tomato bread, fried Jalapeños, risotto, pad thai x 2, and pineapple dessert. The fried peppers were perfectly seasoned with sea salt and had a smokey flavor. Their pad thai was plentiful with seafood. The pineapple dessert was amazing! It was crunchy and crisp phyllo dough wrapped around a grilled pineapple slice. I loved that we got lost and found such a gem. If we had more time, I would have wandered the Gothic area some more and had another meal here.

Lo positivo: su ubicación en una tranquila y preciosa plaza del Born. Lo «negativo»: no sirven tapas, únicamente menú (al menos al mediodía). Nosotros queríamos sentarnos a tomarnos una cerveza y una tapita (el aperitivo, vaya) y de tapas, nada. Si no ibas a comer, no te podías sentar en la terraza.
Pero tuvimos suerte porque tienen unas sillas que han puesto justo al lado de la puerta (recuerda a los pueblos cuando antiguamente las abuelas sacaban la silla a la calle a sentarse «a la fresca» y ver a la gente pasar) y ahí si te puedes sentar a tomarte una cervecita. El menú tenía buena pinta aunque no lo probé. Eso será la próxima vez!

La Candela tiene una ubicación mágica, perfecta, en la plaza de Sant Pere con unas mesitas. Para estar a dos o con amigos, me mola mucho.
Adentro tiene su encanto también, sencillo pero muy coqueto.
La comida está muy buena. Las papas bravas además de deliciosas tienen una presentación increíble.
He ido 2 veces y ya soy fan.

Die schöné Außenterasse kann nicht über die unfreundliche Bedienung hinwegtäuschen.
Touristen scheinen hier nicht willkommen zu sein. Essen kann ich nicht bewerten, da es keine Karte gab. Das Bier schmeckt dennoch :-)

Had large group, many appetisers and entrees, all pretty bland. Generic menu, not Spanish. Wine staff very ignorant, not even knowing how to serve bottle of wine, and completely clueless about wines on menu. Table service friendly, but average. On Plaza Real.

do spanish people actually eat tapas? hors d’oeuvres are my favorite food, if i had a choice all food would be served on toothpicks and I’ll force myself to go to an event if I know there are hors d’s being served

Ahhhhgg! está de obras. Ya que por fin sale el sol y además calienta.
Me pregunto si estoy condenada a no poder sentarme en esta deliciosa plaza. Sin embargo no hay — o no había — excusa para no comer uno de sus muy bien elaborados y racionados (?) menús dentro.
Cuando te parece que el local está lleno, es demasiado pequeño! llueve, tienes hambre, huele a cocina rica y te empieza a entrar una desolación infantil, descubres que existe un «al fondo» amplio, calentito y con sitio libre. Una mezcla estética entre casa de comidas de barrio y sitio modernito reciclado (creo que las lámparas las hace su dueña). Dos platos bien sabrosos con varios postres a elegir y bebida. Gente variopinta: turistas despistados, un par de compañeras de la ofi, un autónomo con su portátil… y en medio un par de camareros de lo más eficaz te sientan, te dan de comer, te sonríen. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?
Para cenar ves más «Amigos de Peter», alguna pareja jovencita y una carta corta y otra vez estupenda. Van a cerrar y llega ese momento que me encanta en el que participas por encima del colegueo de todos los que curran ahí. Al final esas cosas también suman. En fin, que sea una reformita de lavado cara, porfavor, porfavor.

Mañana de sábado agradable, buena temperatura, buena luminosidad y una mesa libre en la terraza de La Candela. Café con leche y el periodico.
La plaza de Sant Pere es una zona tranquila donde descansar y meditar, además la gente de sala, terraza y barra son muy agradables.
Si vas a comer tiene un menú del día (tres platos de primero a elegir e idem de segundo) por 11 euros y si es en finde (desconozco), aunque es algo más caro, son 15. Siempre tiene al menos una opción vegetariana.

Molt bonic, good food, but the service was poor. I would have given this little treasure another star, but we sat there one day and just waited for something to happen until I had to demand service. Then, after that, we still had to wait some more… and the place was almost empty… Too relaxed, for a place like Barcelona.

Coca Cola en la placita, dos mesitas exteriores justo a la entrada.
Lo mejor: sentarse en las sillas de la puerta, como las señoras vecinas y observar la gente que pasa por delante. Me sentí cotilla durante unos 20 minutos marujeando entre idas y venidas a quienes pasaban por delante de nuestro privilegiado puesto de control vecinal.
Sí, tienen una gran terraza con muchas mesas pero el hecho de estar apoyado contra la pared «estilo pueblo» compartiendo bebida en la mesa baja es impagable.
La Coca Cola es de las grandes.
Eché de menos una toquilla y un abanico.

El Born tiene plazas muy muy encantadoras. Esta esa una de ella, la de Sant Pere y como buena plaza ha de tener un buen local en el que degustar una cena o un vino de noche, embelesado con el entorno.
Ayer por la tarde, aprovechando la nueva ola de calor africano que asola Barcelona, celebramos el cumpleaños de una amiga en La Candela, que es el lugar perfecto para disfrutar de una velada agradable. El servicio fue espléndido, agradable y rápido y la cuenta no fue nada «expensive».
Volveré en cuanto pueda.

Tengo que decir que el establecimiento en sí no me genera muchas alegrías; tampoco críticas, ojo, pero es que está tan condicionado por el entorno donde se sitúa…
Es un bar más bien pequeño, con un rollo entre cool y new age que hasta me llega a molestar un poco, pero cuando estás en la terraza todo se olvida. Y esto sucede porque está enmedio de la que seguramente es mi plaza favorita de Barcelona (rivalizando duramente con Sant Felip Neri): Sant Pere de les Puelles.
Por eso, por pasar un rato agradable aquí, si puede ser un atardecer de primavera o al sol del invierno, paso cualquier filiación que no sea de mi agrado.

Menuda sorpresa resultó ser ayer noche La Candela. Todo empezó con un vino tinto muy respetable. La terracita con sus velas jugó el papel de imán, Raquel, la dueña, hizo el resto. Me presentó a Fina, la espía soviética de la portería de al lado, tiene 80 años, pero nadie diría que tiene más de 60, confesó que usaba crema de avena. Más tarde apareció otra vecina, con su bata rosa y sus zapatillas, al parecer es la «encargada» de La Candela, cuando Raquel no está ella le pasa el parte de cómo se han portado los camareros, si la gente se va agusto o no, etc. «Su» fue otro descubrimiento, me explicó otras mil historias y también la suya, es amiga de Raquel y la ayuda de vez en cuando por amor al arte, o por amor a la amistad, que es más bonito, sino siempre más personal. La guinda vino con Yesse Yamuna, el tarotista que se pasa por allí los jueves y lee de forma gratuita las cartas, pero que ayer, por ser lunes y estar entre amigos, nos las echó a todos, regalándonos a su vez un pequeño librito con sus primeros poemas.
Bueno, y todavía no he dicho nada de ¡las pieles de patata! tienen que ser probadas, un crimen si no se demandan. Su las describió así: «La sublimación del reciclaje en versión alimentaria». Ahí queda eso. Por lo demás: croquetas de pescado, quesos, ensaladas, langostinos rebozados… y el menú de mediodía, delicioso y bien de precio. Como dije al principio, una muy grata sorpresa, ya que habré tomado diez veces algo allí, pero siempre de paso, ayer pasé cuatro horas en la terraza y la verdad es que me fui viendo diferente toda la plaza.
