we visited Barcelona some months ago and we picked the Mercer Boria, first of all, because of its location right in the Gothic quarter, in a peaceful narrow street near a metro stop(Jaume I), bars and nightlife but without the chaos of the Ramblas. The design of the hotel was a nice bonus: All rooms are modern, spacious and filled with design pieces like lamps, couches, chairs, etc. Free wi-fi and clean, modern bathrooms complete the package(also, tea/coffee maker in room and a complimentary bottle of water). If you’re passing by you might not see the hotel at first, it looks more like a design office or specialty bookshop. Staff is nice and helpful, I e-mailed them in advance to let them know I had a package coming prior to my arrival and when I got there the package was waiting for me in the room. Breakfast is part buffet(cheese, ham, sweets) and part made to order(eggs) — again, design pieces also in the breakfast room — I loved that they have an open kitchen and you can see the nice lady prepare your tortilla. Everything is nice and ingredients are good quality, but I was expecting it to be richer in variety. The position couldn’t be better, it’s just a couple of blocks away from the Boria and Santa Caterina markets with lots of other food options nearby, from basque tapas bars, wine bars to fine dining. It is great for sightseeing because it is a 5 minutes walk away from the Cathedral, the Plaza de Espanya(and the bus to/from the airport) and 10 minutes from the Ramblas; the nearby metro stop connects you to the rest of the city. If you are not in Barcelona to party all night it’s great because the area is, although lively with restaurants, quiet by night. Next time we are in Barcelona, this will definitely be one of our first choices for accommodation.
