When I heard about a new Latin fusion restaurant opening in the Conejo valley, I was really excited. My excitement increased when I saw that Sr. Carlos’ menu had some Cuban influences and innovative dishes. My husband and I were eager to get our Latin fix without having to travel to the Valley. My heart was set on the seafood quesadillas, which have lobster, shrimp, and scallops at a reasonable price. To my bewilderment, when the dish came out, the quesadillas were not pan fried with a crisp exterior, and cut into wedges but were soft, rolled and cut — like a pinwheel sandwich with a dollop of guacamole and pineapple salsa on the side. While the presentation was interesting, it was really disappointing and poorly executed. My husband’s chicken quesadilla was the same way. We also ordered the house salad, which was huge but lacked flavor and came with plantain chips that were so hard and almost impossible to chew. The tortilla chips were also pretty bland. On a positive note, our waitress was terrific, and the ambience and décor are very nice and hip. Sorry, Señor Carlos. I really wanted to like you, but I guess we’ll have to keep driving into the Valley for better Latin cuisine.
