This hole in the wall is the kind of textbook authentic, down-home, South Valley-style establishment that you’d expect(and that we were hoping for). I’ve driven by plenty of times, but I’ve never had the time to check it out. I brought a friend with me from upstate New York who was here completing an internship. I suggested it so that she could try some authentic New Mexican food, so we ordered a couple of the classics: beef fajitas and huevos rancheros. The sopapillas with honey were here favorite. Having lived here over a decade, I enjoyed the food, but nothing was over the top stand-out. The service is quick and ready with a friendly joke. The atmosphere is stuck in the 70’s, dark, and kitschy. We checked out some interesting oil paintings and cozied up to a traditional old diner-style booth. I would recommend this spot to bring out-of-towners, knowing that it is what it is… not upscale, but original.

A cozy little dive place that we located one dark night after driving for 12 hours. We we exhausted and hungry, and they served us huge portions of excellent home-made New Mexico Mexican food — so good. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Super low prices. We must do a return visit next time we’re in ABQ.

The atmosphere is warm. Wait staff will greet you with a smile even just 30 minutes before closing. Even if you’re taking your food to go, they’ll welcome you with crunchy chips and a fresh picante salsa. It’s a classic old school diner– complete with dingy plastic cups, low hanging ceilings and a full menu. The food is home style Mexican and American food with great seasoning and classic flavors. If you’re looking for a tasty meal and kind hospitality, on the road or locally, this is a well done, family run diner. And can you ever question a good Bears fan?

Great food, friendly staff, huge portions, and good prices. I had the Indian taco and it was spectacular.

When visiting family in ABQ, they knew my love for New Mexican food had to be satiated. Luckily, el hub enjoys chile and sopapillas and the likes as much as me, so dinner was an easy choice. My father in law and his wife have been coming to Mac’s for years, it’s her favorite restaurant in the city and I can see why. I also believe she has been coming here for years, because this place is so old school it’s crazy(in a good way). Regulars and noobs are treated with warmth and kindess, the place has a little seediness to it which is kinda cool — plus there’s a huge cow out front so hey, I have to love it! Also, if you’re into that sorta thing(I am) there are some really cool murals around here and across the street. We started with steak fingers. Whatever those things were(and I still have no idea) — they were pretty damn good. I’ll just describe them as mildly spiced chopped steak formed into a cigar, battered with some light batter and fried?.. yet they aren’t crispy, they remain slightly soft. Again, I don’t know what kind of sorcery this is. but they were great. They both went with huevos rancheros, which I normally would be down with but I saw something else that piqued my interest. She loves the red chile here, he loves the green — so that was not much help in me making up my mind. Dear husband went with some porky carnitas enchiladas things which were really very good. I on the other hand was intrigued by the ‘Indian taco’. I have a Native American friend whom always boasts about these things on Facebook so I just had to have one. It’s pretty much a fluffy fried bread(almost like a pita) topped with nacho toppings. meat, chile, lettuce, sour cream, cheese, olives, tomatoes, etc. I went with the green chile by the way and was happy I did. I much preferred it over the red. The thing was humongous and I could(quite sadly so) only finish a third.

Great hole in the wall! Don’t come for the service, but for the great home cooked meals. Best steak fingers around!

This is one of our favorite regulars. The steak fingers are so much better than the drive-ups. Love the red chili.

I never order Juevos Rancheros when I eat anywhere, but after I tried them from here, this is all I order. I am now a regular at this place. breakfast is great. Staff knows exactly what I want all the time. A local favorite for myself and others.

New mexican food at it’s best. My favorite salsa hands down! Very friendly staff && even better food. The sopapillas are to die for, I highly recommend it if you’re in the mood for traditional new mexican flavor.(: Mac’s has been a family favorite for years.

Holy Cow! No, not the other restaurant in Albuquerque, but the big cow statue out front! It’s Holy. It must be! Because this place seems like the kind of place you’d go for some shady business and a sandwich on the side, but it’s really a chile/steak finger miracle worker. I’m super impressed. Yes, it’s way old timey and the tickets are written up by hand, and it’s kinda surprising that they even take credit cards(they do!) — but there is something so comforting and homey and nostalgic to the ambiance. The servers are like old friends of all the customers, simple and sweet and eager to please. They do offer bottled beers too, which was great for me because it was a Friday afternoon the day before the 4th and I was most definitely ready to start my weekend. A Corona was about 4 bucks. No complaints. They start you off with chips and salsa too, and the flavor and spice of the salsa paired oh so well with my Mexican beer. My companion got the ribeye special… med rare, cooked to perfection, juicy, tender, wonderful. I tried the steak fingers and enchilada special with a side salad with ranch. Now, I’m pretty finicky about my ranch, and usually awkward diners just don’t have what it takes. I was pleasantly surprised. The salad was fresh, topped with cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese and the ranch was great. Not my all time favorite ranch of course, but who’s asking for that? I just want a ranch I can get along with. Ooh goodness, as for the rest of the meal. The red and the green chile were both phenomenal. Just spicy enough. The enchiladas were wonderful, cheese gooey, rice and beans soft and cooked just right. Then to finish with the golden sopapillas which were definitely among the best I’ve had. So fresh, not too greasy, just perfect. Man oh man did Mac’s wow me! For those new to the place, driving by, whatever, don’t judge it from the outside. They get JAMPACKED, and for good reason. Solid decision for breakfast, lunch or dinner! The pricing is absolutely fair(my enchilada and steak finger special was $ 8 before I added the side salad, and it was a lot of food! The Ribeye special is 13 bucks all day every day, and you can’t beat that either!) I will most definitely be back!

A great example of Albuquerque Mexican Food. The beans were whole pintos, the chips were flavorful, and the beef was tender. The soppapillas were tasty as well. The salsa was too tomato sauce and not enough other vegetables, but it did have a kick. Worth the drive in.

Food is good but I hate going here. It is about time they renovate and expand this place. It is so cramped and uncomfortable. I can’t even enjoy my food. Not to mention how dirty it always is. For as long as I can remember growing up until today it has always just looked run down and dingy. This is one of my moms favorite places but I can barely stand being there I only visit maybe but once a year.

This place is awesome in a slighty-seedy and gritty sort of way. It’s old-style in here. Lots and lots of regulars, which tells me it’s good. Service was great and efficient. Food was really really good. Hubby said his rib-eye was the best he’s had outside of The Lone Star State. My enchiladas were good, but be warned that the green sauce is HOT! My daughter’s Kids Taco Plate had so much food on it that she couldn’t finish it all, which is saying something cause this kid can eat. Sopapillas were fantastic. Overall, a great place.

This place lives up to the reviews — good food and very nice service. The sopapillas are amazing. The staff is probably the best part — we were treated wonderfully

For me, this is the local neighborhood place to grab a bite. Everyone is always friendly and it kind of feels like you’re in a small town. Also… cow on the sign… gotta love that. The food always comes out pretty quickly and is always just what I was craving. The specialty here is New Mexican food, so it’s just right any time of day as far as I’m concerned. Every meal starts out with chips and salsa and ends with sopapillas and honey. Also, they are open pretty late(11pm), so as long as you don’t wait too long in the night this is some epic drunk food.

Visiting from Cali. I went here this morning and and place was really busy with the Saturday morning crowd, waited over 20 minutes for my take out order. The food was okay. Maybe I did not order the right thing.

Yeah, I liked it. Immediately hit it off with folks sitting at nearby tables, met a retired Marine, dropped my purse on the floor — twice — much to everyone’s amusement. I really love this kind of informal, familiar atmosphere. Food was on the table fast! Still not sure what a steak finger is and pretty sure I’ll never order one again, but it was worth a try. The green was hot, the soppas were fresh, the eggs were perfect light and fluffy. Yummy in my tummy. Check me out doing the awesome diner breakfast dance!

The best of Albuquerque hole in the wall joints. Breakfast lunch or dinner it’s the place to be. New. Mexican to traditional American food they got you covered. The steak fingers are the staple here the best I’ve ever had. The only down fall is the place is small and if you get there at the wrong time you will be standing and waiting for a table. It’s seat yourself FYI.

$ 3.99 for Huevos Rancheros?! Yes please! Awesome breakfast specials. I ordered that and it was very good. It was super smothered with green sauce and cheese, I could have done with just a little less but I know some people are into that! It also came with a side of Sopapillas and honey, awesome! My partner got something not on the specials, and I got coffee, our whole bill was $ 12! Can’t argue that. Service was also good, quick and friendly.
