This place just opened in the 5th Avenue Mall. It’s exciting to try a new place especially one that’s different than the usual mall food court stuff. This is part of a national chain but I think it’s the first one in Anchorage. I looked over the menu and saw plenty of barbecue chicken, ribs, chicken katsu, shrimp, mahi mahi, salmon and halibut. You can get the loco moco, beef stew and spam as well as kalua pork that comes with cabbage mixed in. Prices looked reasonable for Anchorage. I asked if they could make me a kahlua sandwich and the friendly women at the counter thought it would be no problem. Too bad the sticky wicket chef in back was rigid and clueless. I noticed they had to send it back and yell at him… he kept shaking his head, visibly confused. I am pretty sure he was not an Islander. You put the kahlua pork on the bun. Not a big deal. When I finally got it it had tomato, onion and mayo on it. He couldn’t get it thru his head it wasn’t a hamburger I guess. No matter, it was good even with cabbage cooked with it. The macaroni salad was another matter — it was wallowing in mayo. Way, way too much mayo. Hula Hands has no competition here — no pulasami or lupulu… no tarot leaves of any kind… but it’s a good break from the other places in the food court and I will probably give it another chance with barbecued chicken or beef next time.
