Mediocre sushi. The only reason we came here was cause our favorite AYCE was closed today and this place is close to home. The sushi rolls are small and messy. AYCE sushi is supposed to keep coming, but we’d get one small roll and wait about 10 minutes for the next one. There are about four tables here and only one extremely slow & old sushi chef. He looks like the owner of the restaurant. Between the tiny rolls and mediocre taste, this restaurant would have gotten 3 stars, but since it takes so long for the food to come(I’m waiting for my next roll as I write) this place is a solid 2 stars.

To start off. even though this review is posted under«Kin Sushi», the place looks like it has been renamed to Samurai sushi. So this review is for Samurai Sushi, not Kin Sushi. I’m actually very impressed by their Chirashi sushi there. The quality of the cuts of tuna, whitefish, and salmon were superb. They had a good freshness to it, like if the sushi chelf dived into the ocean beat the fish with his bare hands and wrestled it back to the surface for us to enjoy. If I put the freshness on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being Carlton Banks, while 10 being the Fresh Prince of Bellair. He would be a Will Smith post movie career. It was that fresh. If you walked to the restaurant expecting a cure for terminal cancer. You’ll die anyways, but you’ll say, «Damn that was a fresh fish» before you died. Their Chirashi wasn’t a strict chirashi, I would call it more of a combo sushi bowl. Call it what you will, it had a large variety of different sashimi/sushi, and other accompaniments to make it all around a flavor melting pot. Besides the usual pieces of sashimi on rice that most chirashi bowls are, this one also had pieces of sushi, pickled veggies of an unidentifiable nature, and pieces of tempura salmon skins. The pieces of sushi rolls really blew my mind. It’s like a sushi on top of a sushi. That’s like sushi2 power, sushi squared!!! Where have you ever seen a sushi made using sushi??? It’s never been done. or those who have so far have comitted sepuku because they have failed. However, this Samurai sushi did it and did it well. And it wasn’t some crappy california roll he just threw on top, it’s a full fledged sushi rolled with quality Hoshihikari sushi rice on Seaweed paper imported from Japan, and other quality ingredients worthy of a warrior. I also enjoyed the pieces of tempora salmon skins that were on the plate. It had a good balance of fish, tempura batter, and honor, dressed with a edo era helping of spicy/sweet mayo sauce that was Oishii desu. The one downside I can say is the cuts of fish were made to look good vs. being most tender(cutting with the grain instead of against). But this is forgivable in a chirashi style since the pieces are small enough to eat in one bite. The chef there is a true artist. He asked me about what I thought about the dish, and gave me samples of other dishes he’s experimenting with. They were all pretty good. Since I forgot his name, I’ll call him SushiCheffu-san. SushiCheffu-san has a great understanding of flavor profiles. One of the dishes he was experimenting with was a squid sushi salad. It had a good blend of finely sliced red peppers, citrus, and the right touch of savoryness. I don’t know if it’ll be on the menu, but it would be a good appetizer. He also made a fruit carving of an apple slice that looked kinda like a bird. Imagine the skin cut into a tail and curled up. For $ 15 for the Chirashii bowl, this was a great deal. I would gladly play $ 25 for such a dish. The chef treats people well, and the food all around had a good flavor profile. I think asking for more will be either gimmicky or illegal.(btw. if you know a good sushi place that serves blue whale sashimi, I woudl like to know.)

Ive had a lot of shitty restaurants experience in my day and i know this phrase gets thrown around a lot but please believe this reviewer when i say that this place gets the lifetime achievement award for WORSTSERVICEEVER. In a nutshell, ill tell you why: someone from my group ordered a teriyaki chicken(bitch isnt a fan of cheap sushi places) and she wasnt satisfied with the portion size of their rice(and really, it was like 2 tablespoons full) and asked the notoriously slow and angry server. She asked for more rice and the waiter obliged. The meal continued without incident. When we try to leave, the server stops us and finds it necessary to tell us that this is a family run restaurant has been around for a WHOLEYEAR(!) and that they’ve been serving that same portion of rice for their ENTIRE existence. He straightforwardly adds that to ask for more rice«shows what kind of character you have»(?) and that he hopes he «never has to see us again» Wow. Just… wow. Never had that happen before, where I was told to never give business to a business, BY the business ever again. Here’s the thing, we were NOT being rude, condescending or belligerent, either! I’ll admit, I can be a total bitch at times when i think im being wronged but this wasnt one of those times. I think that’s what made it more shocking, that this kind of reaction came from a simple request for more rice… We didnt even go off on how outrageously SLOW the service was(the first 35min after ordering only produced miso soups) or how the sushi is shit because its PACKED with artificial crab meat as filler which completely overpowers the other ingredients or how absolutely hostile and eerie the ambiance was. Nope. «Insulting» the portions of the rice invoked the wrath of sushi server.(and we didnt even insult it!) i was going to give this place a 2 – 3 before i left but the comment from the apparent«owner»(but more than likely, black sheep asshole son of the real owners) was really uncalled for and now makes my true rating a negative 30,000,000. I just hope emo server asshole never gets hold of a firearm because he looks really close to just snapping. They mightve survived a whole entire year(!) but Im sure they wont make it to 2. Especially with how dead the restaurant is. The place would be so much happier and brighter if you turned it into a dungeon where people get tortured and raped by knives made of sandpaper.

Perfectly portion rice for sushi. Let’s just say, it’s more of quality vs the quantity but then again they have all you can eat. Please remember is one sushi chief so if you want your money worth, don’t come in on a prime time dinner. Lunch was dead on a week day of Tuesday. Verdict: sushi was really good. Rice ratio was really good. Try the cucumber salad. I would come back here again, specially get my sushi fix.

I really wanted to like you… I swear. Lent season is not helping with the lack of protein options available on fridays. So I figured why not try this place out instead of going to my usual All You Can Eat(AYCE) sushi spots. After my stint at Micasa Bakery, I seated myself at the sushi bar with the waiter, providing a menu. Explaining to me their AYCE option for lunch was priced at $ 17.95(thinking to myself, might as well fill up without any hesitation). I got all the usual slices of the sea, just to get a taste of their quality they offered: Nigiri Style Salmon: Smooth, somewhat slimy. But still consumption worthy. Yellowtail: Same as the salmon. White Tuna: Same as the salmon and yellowtail. However there was a ginger paste, that was slightly dabbled on my pieces. Probably to add a bit of sour taste and avoid a pungent smell. Red Snapper: Consistent from other places I’ve tried in the past Roll Variants Spicy Tuna: Consistent(but smaller in portion compared to other AYCE spots), a fair amount of cucumber slices for a bit of texture Lobster Roll: Similar in texture to a scallop roll, but it broke easily therefore the construction of the roll makes it a bit messy to eat. After numerous cups of hot tea, silent sushi consumption at a slow and steady pace, I was ready for my check. It came out essentially to $ 22.00 plus tax and tip. Place is sanitary so that wouldn’t be an issue. Quality of the fish could be slightly better and service could be a bit more prompt. But it was a chill day and maybe it was an off day for the sushi chef? Either way, glad at least Cerritos offers fairly decent alternatives if I don’t want to go too far north or south along the 405 for good food. Cheers! 3.5 stars.

After spending an afternoon in the OC, I was contemplating whether to come here or the other AYCE sushi that’s available in Cypress. After much discussion with a fellow Unilocaler, we decided on Kin Sushi. Upon arriving, we saw pretty empty restaurant, but we’re pretty early for dinner, it’s only 6pm. We got seated and informed that the AYCE is $ 23.95 for sushi and some appetizers on the paper menu. We ordered: — Spider Roll — not bad, but barely could taste the crab — Halibut — didn’t taste like halibut — White fish — one of the better fish served that night — Yellowtail — just okay — Albacore — just okay — Mackerel — just okay — Red snapper — just okay — Albacore’s Roll — just okay — Spicy Tuna Tempura — Jalapeño Bomb — didn’t really taste it — Oyster Shooter — good — Rainbow Roll — good I felt like the dish were just alright for the price and you could tell that they’re not that fresh. I usually love halibut, but it totally disappointed me. I would recommend the White fish the most, because it has some yuzu sauce or something that create a nice flavor and seemed to be the freshest among the rest of the order. The green tea was definitely NOTGREEN, it was just a regular tea when I specifically asked if they had a green tea and she said, «yes». Totally weird. The waiter also kept saying, «Would you like to refill your green tea?» I almost wanted to say, «Are u sure this is Green tea?» Service was attentive, my tea was filled promptly and we didn’t get chased out after one hour, unlike in Midori, where you are timed for the AYCE. So, if you’re just looking to eat a lot of sushi for good value, this is the place, otherwise, I wouldn’t even venture this far for sushi.

I recalled their Americanized sushi rolls being pretty solid a year ago when I came here to eat with some friends for their AYCE sushi, but apparently a lot has changed in a year because my recent visit here was disappointing. My friend and I shared Oyster Shooters, the small Sashimi plate, a Lobster Roll, a Superman Burrito Roll, a Hawaiian Roll, and a 2-piece Ikura nigiri. The most noticeable details about all of the sushi we got were that the fish were not fresh, the cuts of fish were small and of various shapes and sizes, and that the rolls were significantly smaller than they used to be. Add it all up, you get an expensive and unsatisfying sushi dinner. Not a single dish was memorable or left me wanting more. My other gripe about Kin was that they only had one sushi chef for the whole house. This meant a 15 minute wait to get our first plate and nearly a 5 minute wait in between each plate thereafter. If I had done an AYCE deal, this wait would have screwed me over because I’d likely feel full 2 or 3 rolls in. So save your money and find yourself a better sushi restaurant.

I have been a Kin Sushi fan since it’s first opening and I still come here regularly to feast on cheap, good sushi. When I first came with my friends about a year ago, the chefs and service was really good! We also got a free dessert with out meal. After a while, I came back multiple times, even having my birthday dinner here! They were great on service, even the waitress remembered me from before! On my recent trip to Kin Sushi, I had the Hawaiian(one of my favorites), the special roll, while my friends had the baked Scallop and Spicy Tuna. It was a good portion and really fresh and great tasting! The restaurant wasn’t crowded at all so our food and beverages came quickly, the rolls that needed to be cooked coming out last. The Hawaiian Roll is melt in your mouth with the mango, cream cheese, and salmon. Mmm! I’m still giving it a five because of the great service I have remembered and have still been getting. Especially since the sushi is relatively low-priced and fresh(even though the price did go up a bit!) I just hope that their service stays the same(looking at the most recent posts!)

Still a fan. I was almost scared off to not come to Kin Sushi b/c of the bad re-reviews, but curiousness get the best of me. Tasting for myself, the sushi was just how I remembered it. They were generous with fish portions, not much rice, and that day the fish tasted fresh. Like I said in my previous review: great for AYCE. Our water did come out really late. Food first, and hope you don’t choke on your sushi, b/c they will take their sweet time on beverages. Back in the day, these sushi chefs used to work at Joe’s Sushi in Buena Park, so I’ve grown accustomed to their lack of smile and conversation skills. My perspective is that you have to be a true food whore to like Kin Sushi. If you can stomach the bad waitresses, you’ll receive good sushi in return. The question is: how much of a food whore are you?

After reading my Unilocal friend Hazel Q’s update on this place, the other star deductions by other fellow Unilocalers and, because this place was a 5 star ROTD for me I had to get my furry butt over here to find out WTF was going on. I arrived at 11:30AM and seated myself inside only to find there was no one up front then, another customer walked in after me. So, I picked up my check list for AYCE Sushi made my selections and waited and waited. The female server arrived 15 minutes late but was quick to get me some Green Tea Iced Tea and sushi condiments. Then out of nowhere a lone sushi chef appeared. I mean really 1 person for lunchtime? Last time I was here there were 2 sushi chefs and they were booking! I ordered quite a bit of sushi and the like because I love to pig out on all the interesting things like the Quail Egg Shooter, The Fried Jalapeño Roll and that Superman Burrito Roll. In all I ordered 25 items and intended to make them my emotional friend on this rainy day. Well, things started out okay and between myself and the other customer my delicacies were arriving at convenient intervals. So, on the second round of a really yummy Rainbow CA Roll the server comes over to my table and asked me «Are you full?»…I said«Full of what?»…“No, I mean are you going to eat all of this sushi if he prepares it?”; I said«I ordered it and yes, I’m going to eat it». How rude, not once at Todai has any of the staff ever came and looked at my plate and said«Are you going to eat everything?» Two more couples arrived and I looked at the clock and it was 12:50PM and I had to be back to LB by 1:30PM; does the sushi chef finish up the last of my orders? No, he starts on their orders and I wait 10 minutes; the the server had disappeared into the kitchen and I wanted my check. So, I got up and asked the sushi chef if he had started on the rest of my order and without looking up he just said«NOH!». So, I asked him to tell the server to give me my check I need to leave and thanks for the delicious food. No, he didn’t do that I had to wait until she reappeared and received my check after flagging her down like the checkered flag at NASCAR. I go up to the register, my bill was $ 20.80, I handed her $ 40, she runs back to the sushi chef and comes back to tell me they don’t have change so your order is just $ 20; you don’t have change, yes there was no change in the register! I didn’t even want to get into«hey, get some out of the safe, this is a restaurant you always have change» I gave the girl $ 3 bucks and she shot me a look when I left saying«thanks come again» ICK! Final Note: Food-Delicious(wished it had been prepared so I could finish it all) Service-Midiocore at best, Jesus would come sooner than my food, the Sushi Chef was slow and the girl was so disengaged she might as well not have been there at all. Also, is it going to kill you to give me enough wasabi and ginger to accommodate my order? Ambiance– I was so sick of listening to Power 106 Hip Hop and The Noon Hip Hop Mix I could have self combusted; WTF, have some cultural music to create an ambiance for your dining establishment. This place has been open 6 months now and I truly believe it is doomed to failure and will be closed before the end of this year, if not sooner. Yes, this time when Dorothy walked out of the house that landed in OZ, everything was still in Black & White! And this my fellow Unilocalers is why I don’t like going to Sushi Bars where they prepare it to order; I want to go up, load up my plate and enjoy, not wait until it’s time to switch my Wendy Williams Weave again! Hazel Q, you were right I’m kinda bummed about Kin Sushi too.

I’m a fan… Definitely a must hit up place for me if I ever go visit the parents. Due to the location and value I can’t argue with anything. I might have to sacrifice in the total freshness department, but for an all you can eat place it sure rocks more than others. As others have stated, they don’t overload you with rice to try and fill you up… and the fish slices are very reasonable. I just wish we had a decent AYCE sushi place here in the Bay Area.

I decided to have lunch here today and everything was good like last time. Appetizers are included in the AYCE and this time I hit up the oysters. I must’ve ordered them 8 or so times, but hey, it’s AYCE right? I also ordered the usual suspects — yellowtail lover’s roll, albacore lover’s roll, caterpillar roll, jalapeño bombs etc. The good thing about sushi is that it’s healthy so I don’t feel so bad about stuffing my face, at least not a lot :) I enjoy coming here and hope their business continues to succeed. I came to kin sushi for Yuki’s birthday sushi UYE! AYCE sushi … Dinner was about $ 26. Pretty good deal for all the food you get, and real great quality sushi too. We just passed the order sheet around and made tick marks for everything you wanted to try. I saw that no one wanted the crazy roll, I’m a bit crazy so I thought I would give it a try! And at the end with everything we ate the crazy was my favorite. I’ll give you some craaaazzzzyyyyyy! I had such a great time here I decided to come back with some friends. The second time around it was lunch so the price came out to about $ 20 a person. I’ve come to the conclusion that the cooked BBQ chicken or beef as a roll is pretty gross. So I’m just gonna stick with my crazy roll and appetizers! Rolls that I suggest: –Crazy Roll –Yellowtail Lover’s Roll –Rainbow Roll –Albacore Roll Oh and yet another Korean owned sushi place! All together, I always have a great time… my only gripe about this place is the service. It’s slow and they don’t necessarily get all the orders right.

Despite others who gave this place 5 stars, going to Kin is like a sin. Not sinly delicious, but a sin to commit. And in my husband’s words, «eating at Kin is like having sex… with animals.» We came here for dinner tonight because I felt like having sushi and wanted to try this place out after reading Hazel Q’s review. Their menu was confusing because nowhere did it mention the AYCE sushi, just the sashimi in small letters at the bottom of their laminate menu. We had to ask the waitress and she told us the price. We went ahead and ordered the AYCE for $ 23.95. We ordered the following: yellowtail sushi — fishy salmon sushi — visibly not fresh(who puts lime zest on top?! to cover up the smell, maybe?!) smelt egg sushi — seaweed came apart very easily and all the smelt egg fell out salmon skin & spicy tuna hand roll — just ok scallop hand roll — no flavor dynamite — never ate this with carrots, mushrooms & zucchini inside?! scallops were barely visible thru all the mayo rainbow roll — again, the fish was not fresh yellowtail lovers roll — just ok baked scallop roll — too much mayo hot green tea — pretty good but how can you go wrong with green tea?! $ 1 diet coke — unlimited refills, probably the best thing of the night! however, for a buck, they should have just included the drink in the AYCE price Their rolls were smaller than most rolls. Not sure if it’s the size of rolls they serve for AYCE customers. We couldn’t finish our food and we didn’t want to insult anyone so we decided to take our leftovers to go. Our waitress whispered to us that we’re not supposed to take it to go, but she’ll do it for us anyways. Wasn’t sure if that was a good thing cuz we wouldn’t mind leaving it behind. I guess if you’re a true sushi lover like we are, then don’t waste your time at this joint. Besides, it’s Korean-owned, not Japanese. So I guess I couldn’t expect too much. And to make matters worse, I don’t even think we ordered $ 48 worth of food and was still charged for two AYCE prices! What a rip-off! We don’t mind spending this kind of money on food, but it should be good food at the least. Tonight was such a disappointment. Let’s just hope we don’t fight for the bathroom later…

My friend and I came here cause we were trying to find a sushi place between orange county and el monte. Came to this place after reading Hazel Q’s review and am definitely glad I did. My boyfriend and I decided to do the all you can eat sushi dinner for $ 24 each. Which I thought was over priced but for all the nigiri and food we ordered it was a good idea. Everything we ordered was great! The nigiri was good, the oysters were tasty, and the rolls were very filling, so we didnt order too many of them. THere was only 1 sushi chef, so it took a long time for our food orders to come out, but since we were pacing ourselves, it was actually good that he took long. The service was great as there was someone always around.

I went here as part of a «trial run» for Yuki M.‘s birthday, and thought it was okay. The fish wasn’t as fresh as I’d like. On the actual birthday a week later, the quality was much better, though, that may have just been because we had notified the owner a week in advance. Though Kin Sushi has a large variety of sushi available, and even offer an all-you-can-eat option, the quality I’ve had here has been inconsistent. It may also be a direct result of being part of a large group and all of us making a million orders to indeed get all we can eat. But, certain sushi rolls are better than others and it would take several visits before I can pin those«specialties» down. I recall some were good and some were not so good. Also, depending on the days you come in, you may be graced with fresher sushi than others, unless you make a grand announcement to the owner ahead of time. I believe the price for the AYCE sushi is reasonable($ 23.00), but I find that I get extremely full after a couple rolls. It may actually be cheaper to just order a la carte unless you’re certain you can eat more than three sushi rolls. The creamier rolls are the heaviest ones, and I don’t recommend filling up on those. It also goes without saying that the AYCE system is not without flaws. It is not clear whether or not you can share. I suppose if everyone in your group declares they are in it for the AYCE, then share away. However, if at least one is not down for AYCE, I suppose you’re not suppose to share with that individual, otherwise, the restaurant loses money because it would only take one person with the AYCE option to feed his or her entire table. Once cool side to the all you can eat sushi is that appetizers are also included in the deal. So, feel free to stray away from sushi if you’ve had too much fish in one sitting. Though there seems to be about three chefs on any given moment, orders can still take a while to roll out. What I don’t like about that is that I actually lose my appetite while waiting for more to come out. Just note: On Thursday evenings, the shopping plaza where Kin is located has a farmers market, so parking can be quite difficult. I recommend coming either before it is set up or after 8pm, when the market closes. Or, you should come on any other day of the week.

Came back a second time to see that our previous sushi chef wasn’t there! I could see why some reviews mentioned uninspired sushi and bad service. My first expression was delightful because the chef was by himself and directed all his attention to us, plus there were no waiters. Second time came. A new chef, and a waitress. Sat down… waiting. waiting. Hmmm can I get a drink? Is someone gonna ask me if I want AYCE? Did I mention that our party of 3 was the ONLY customers there? Took a couple of minutes before both the chef and waitress asked us. I have to say. the waitress was pretty ehh, more like maybe lazy? Because she didn’t show any enthusiasm or welcome like our first sushi chef did. So did the new chef, he seemed like he was busy and would hardly look at us. It made me feel like. ughh i don’t wanna bother him. Plus he did he rolls different. The superman burrito wasn’t a burrito! It was like mini sandwiches cut up into like 6 pieces instead of 3 or 4 big ones. Plus one of of rolls fell short. literally. The roll was wrapped sloppily and it was teeny tiny. I’d still come here and hope that our first sushi chef was there because he provided good customer service. and the waitress and new chef didn’t. So sorry. two stars off for both them!

2009 Sushi UYE #9 My 29th Birthday and a new discovery despite my skepticism. Appetizers included with AYCE menu. $ 23AYCE sushi. $ 33AYCE sushi and sashimi. I agree with several of the lower ranked ratings here regarding the fake reviews posted by friends and family, but that should not taint the reputation of the sushi chefs. Charlie and his right hand man behind the sushi counter came from Joe’s Sushi in Cypress. Famous for their quality AYCE sushi, they decided to start their own business and thus, Kin was born. Initially, I read the fake 5-star reviews and was really hesitant to come, but after hearing that the chefs were from Joe’s, I could not help but zoom in and grab a seat with 8 other Unilocalers. 30+ rolls later, we left fairly pleased and very surprised with the quality and service. For AYCE sushi, most will turn their noses up and look the other way, but Kin has impressed me with generous cuts of fish and small amounts of rice with the nigiri. The rolls were in similar proportions of ingredients to rice. Impressive, fresh, and tasty. The point of these sushi dinners is to find affordable sushi that does not compromise quality for quantity and I think next to Yuki Sushi in January, Kin is been one of the best finds in terms of value and enjoyment. Tuna and Salmon were very fresh and firm in presentation, and soft and melting in tasting. Favourites were the albacore and halibut. Just lovely. Service was fast though slightly mixed up, but with 3 sushi chefs and two servers in a restaurant loaded with patrons, they did a pretty good job. Our first test-dinner was even more impressive in that the flow of food ordered was consistent and unending, and with only ONE service for the entire restaurant, the over all experience was fantastic. This time around, all things were good except for the last round of orders placed came out to be far from what was actually ordered. Several nigiri were ordered along with oysters and what came out were tempura rolls and oyster shots. Oh well. It’s bound to happen with a large group at AYCE freshly prepared sushi. AYCE menu includes appetizers which is great for a fat ass like me since appetizers don’t deter me from eating more than my fair share of sushi as a second course. So much was ordered and it was all very good. I don’t remember every dish ordered but I’ll be sure to update once I return and take a paper menu home. For now, rest assured that the fake reviews, as tasteless as they are, don’t stray too far from the truth. Kin Sushi is definitely a great find and proves to be a worthwhile business venture. See you all next month.

Update: 7÷28÷10 Been here many times after the first time I’ve been here and never again! Slow, slow, slow, the end! — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — - Original Rating — 3 Stars Came here for their made to order all-you-can-eat Sushi dinner priced at $ 24.95, because of the 4 and ½ stars that this restaurant has as of date I was expecting something spectacular but instead I was a bit disappointed. We sat at the Sushi Bar and the Sushi Chef wasn’t that friendly at all, since he wasn’t that pleasant I was actually afraid to order more food because he seemed so bitter every time I asked for more. It definitely would have made a difference in my dining experience if he was to smile a bit. The AYCE deal included appetizers, rolls, and nigiri; from the appetizers I ordered baked mussels, oysters, and gyoza — they were all pretty good, but then again it can’t be that hard to go wrong with making those items. As for the rolls, you can pick from fresh, baked, and tempura rolls; it might sound like a large selection to choose from, but in my opinion it wasn’t large enough because there weren’t many specialty rolls that stood out to me where I was excited to get. As for the Nigiri, we ordered Salmon and to me the color was a bit off and didn’t seem that fresh at all. I don’t know… maybe I came on an off-day.
