Lets call this Judgement Day. I’m pretty Judgy. While I consider myself someone«normal» and this is far from my «normal» scene, I indulge my friends once in a while and join them in a romp down to Elysium where Nocturnity has hosted several events including Prom of the Dead and most recently the Vampire Carnival and a few times to their formerly weekly thursday night whatever. I’ve met the«Vampire Court» randomly through these various events and they are decidedly snobby. I’ve put that aside for this review, while they are unusually snooty, they still manage to put on at least moderately fun events. My biggest problem with all these events are the entertainment they put on the stage. While I understand it’s hard to book a legitimately talented act in that particular venue, it is still possible. At the Vampire Carnival I was heavily disappointed with most of the acts on the stage. I don’t remember the acts names but they were far from«professional» dancers even in the realm of sarcasm. The ones who were the best were the strippers turned artists. They usually just let their BFFs get up on stage and flop around while calling it «art» or dance or something… I doubt if most of these people have ever had professional dance instruction. POINTYOURHOOVES. I have a great time people watching and the group of folks here always gives me a good laugh. People dressed as pirates, steampunks, «nerds» that wear«ironic» shirts, «vampires,» creepers, someones mom, and plenty of sad girls with daddy problems. At the bare minimum I get a good laugh and its worth the small cover fee.

Contrary to previous reviews, this«club» is just a private group using Elysium as a venue once a week. The people are elitist, judgmental, drama laden, and especially boring. Outside of their own clique they’re a chuckle and an eye-roll for the larger goth community in town. By all means, come visit Nocturnity to witness the running joke, but don’t expect to find someplace you’d want to live.

Nocturnity throws an event every week, and I’m there. Every. Week. This place is bringing the Austin goth community back with a vengeance, but better yet, it’s full of some of the most awesome and open-minded people I’ve ever met. They just moved into Elysium to do a regular Thursday night event and I can’t wait. I’ve been an Elysium regular for years and the Nocturnity events are a pretty nice change of pace while catering to the same crowd and bringing in new faces too. DJ Ravnos, one of the main DJ’s, knows how to get a room moving, and actually turned me on to a lot of new industrial/ebm… never the same ‘ol stuff, which I love. The vibe, the people, the music, the culture. All killer. Definitely worth checking out.
