So disappointing. We ordered the combo tepanyaki plate that was horribly over cooked and sparse at best. Our server never returned after bringing the meal. No refills. Nothing at all. Another server brought the ticket after we asked for it. Definitely won’t be back.

We had no idea where to go for dinner for our one night in Austin so we browsed Unilocal to find that Shogun had really good reviews. We looked at the menu and decided to go here despite the rolls being more expensive than what we’re spoiled with back here in Houston. We went for a somewhat late dinner at 9pm and the place was quiet with patrons just at 3 tables so I didn’t feel like that was a good sign. Our waiter was attentive and polite, so for service I would give this place a solid 4 stars. The only comment is that when he came to our table to take our order and when he brought us our food and named each item he would pop a squat down beside the table to be below our eye level and it was just kind of awkward. He did so at the other tables too. The food would give this place a much higher rating but its just way too over priced for what we were getting which is why I’m giving it 2 stars. Agedeshi Tofu– 1⁄5 This appetizer came with two blocks of tofu that were porous, dry and spongy instead of the soft and smooth tofu that I’m used to. The tofu block was way too big to be enjoyable and was my least favorite dish of the whole meal. Spider Roll– 3⁄5 There was nothing wrong with this roll, it was decently sized and tasted good but was the same thing that I get at the other sushi restaurants I frequent for $ 4-$ 8 instead of the $ 14 I paid here. Miami Roll & Salmon Lover– 4⁄5 These two rolls were really good, but nothing extraordinary, and again not worth the $ 15-$ 16 price tags. Spicy Tuna Don-5/5 I really liked this dish as it was something I have never had before. It was deconstructed sushi roll heaven in a bowl that packed some heat in it! This meal of 4 rolls and an appetizer ran an $ 80 bill which is crazy to me so that’s why this place sadly gets 2 stars.

Some of the best, moist, and freshest sushi I have had, hands down. I had Salmon and Tuna Nigiri, lobster, and Salmon lovers roll. All top notch. I’ll be back very soon. Owners are very nice and helpful. I don’t know how you could give it anything less then 5 stars.

I love this little long term far south Austin Japanese restaurant nestled in a small shop center at Manchaca Road and Slaughter Lane… food always excellent, fresh, and satisfying… the owners have created a gentle haven to enjoy a meal without having to travel far… service always superb… take your time and enjoy the ambiance and food before you step out the door to the fast moving world.

The service was terrible. We were seated at a dirty table, and when we asked that the table be cleaned, it took 15 minutes for someone to attempt to clean the table, but it was still dirty. No one seemed interested in taking our order, so we went to the cashier and placed the order ourselves. After 40 minutes of waiting we gave up and left. I really can’t discuss the quality of the food, it may be outstanding but I will never find out.

You could say I’m biased – my first experience with Japanese food occurred at Shogun about 23 years ago. This where I ate my first rolls, learned to use chopsticks and discovered yakisoba. That said, my family still frequents this place and I don’t think we will ever stop. They’ve had some mediocre servers over the years but the owners make the BEST sushi and provide a wonderful dining experience – it’s honestly unbeatable. Their miso soup is among the top three that I’ve ever had, the tempura vegetables are to die for and their sushi is always fresh, delicious and filling. I come back to Shogun every time I visit my dad and sister and I’m never disappointed.

This is a weekly meal for us. The rolls are amazing! As stated in some of the other reviews, we have waited for our meal after we ordered it, but I assumed that’s because they were making it fresh. The wait is never excessive and the food is well worth it.

Great price! Great experience. We always enjoy quick lunch or an evening meal. The owner Christina is friendly and usually behind the sushi bar.

I like Japanese food and was curious about Shogun. We stopped in on a Friday at 1245 for lunch and there was not one person eating there. This was ample reason to walk out but for some reason we didn’t. A big mistake. I asked the Asian server if she spoke Japanese and got an immediate«no. «A second red flag. Why call your restaurant«Shogun» if u are not Japanese? I like Katsudon which is supposed to be fried, breaded pork cutlet served with an egg and cooked onions on top of a bowl of rice. The bowl is kept tightly covered until the diner uncovers it and the steam finishes cooking the egg and everything is piping hot. I always found this a satisfying meal when working with Air Force security service in northern Japan. The lean meat, onions and egg would permeate the rice bowl making each bite tasty and phenomenal. What they serve at Shogun has no connection with what I used to love. I was served an uncovered bowl with lukewarm rice and the most disgusting, fatty, breaded pork cutlet imaginable. I tried and could not eat it. It was appalling. I don’t remember the egg it might have been hidden in the mess that was served somewhere. The server came over with the absurd question, «How is everything?» I answered«horrible.» She may not have known that word but nodded her head and walked away. The next step was the check of $ 30.00 for a miserable, inedible lunch. She offered to pack up the 90 pct remaining in the bowl but I declined saying my dog would not eat that stuff. I really don’t know how this place keeps going. I would never take a chance on eating sushi in a place like this. Beware! I gave one star because the owner did try to explain his Katsudon recipe. I appreciated that but it didn’t correct an appalling meal.

I wouldn’t eat here again. Fish wasn’t fresh, the rolls are very expensive for how small they are and the hot tea had a very odd flavor to it. 2 stars for good service and the place was clean.

Sushi is top notch. Did not try kitchen entrees or Teppanyaki style dining.

Excellent experience. I had the Tuna Lover and ordered a green tea… came out Matcha! Service was excellent. Greeted beautifully at the door and the ambience had me forget my problems of the day. The sushi was very good. Probably my new favorite spot in South Austin.

Great sushi, but pretty pricy. Service is always top notch and a great find in an area that you wouldn’t expect high-quality sushi. I love their nigiri; it’s all high quality fish and generous portions.

I came here for lunch. Order chicken teriyaki box(10.95). Surprisingly, it’s much better than my expectations for a restaurant surrounded by car repair shops. The host and waitress are nice. Sitting & atmosphere are good for friends gathering. Besides, restrooms are super clean.

Shogun. Idk man the sushi was pretty good so of course the restaurant deserves a good rating for it. However, there were quite a few small cons. The devil is in the details. Cute seating area. It was laid out really nicely and the tables were well made and the chairs were comfy . Not beginner friendly though, the sushi at least was so … Idk how to explain it. It was too much. I think sushi should be about simple flavor and minimal combinations. The food tasted great and the fish was fresh. Large portions, the sushi rolls were so large it made it unenjoyable to eat. I felt silly having so much food in my mouth. Bathrooms were warm which is a turn off. I’m big into bathrooms and this place didn’t have a great one.

The food here is legit. It’s in a pretty random area, and I was not expecting above average cuisine. Props to the food aspect. Everything else though is kind of weird. First off, the prices are way too high. Like I didn’t think the food warranted the cost. It was good, but it wasn’t THAT good. The timing is also unfortunate. We ordered an appetizer, and it came out after our main meal and sushi. It was chicken, and the waitress told us halfway that it would take a little while, but it was really odd. It’s also SUPER quiet inside. Like I needed some music or something because we were whispering and my friends and I felt really awkward. It was like eating in a library. We may or may not be back, but there’s enough sushi in South Austin that is on the same level with better ambiance and more reasonable prices.

The interior was really nice, considering it was in a strip mall. Some of the rolls tasted as if they’d come out of the fridge – a little stale and a little too cold to be made fresh, even though the sushi chef was standing right there. Hmmm… Competitors to sushi in this league down south include Nanami on Brodie, Seoul Sushi on South First, and that Yanagi place on William Cannon west of Mopac. They are all pretty comparable, with their own ups and downs.
