One of my favorite bars in town. Always a good time. Live music most nights. The staff is always friendly.

I’ve been to Huey’s a few times now, and truth be told, I’m not sure what to think. They play good music, the service is really REALLY good, but something is still slightly off in my mind. Maybe it’s the creeper factor that looms over this place(the crowd is a WIDE range — from young and fratty to old and dingy), or maybe I’m so spoiled by craft cocktail bars that I can’t appreciate a loud, downtown bar scene anymore? Regardless, the good is obviously outweighing the bad on most counts because I keep returning when I make my rare appearances downtown. Sometimes it’s flattering to be shamelessly ogled by creepers in trucker hats and long beards while dropping it like its hot, right? RIGHT?

I accidentally bumped my beer bottle while turning around to grab it on the bar and it spilled. As it fell, it sprayed on the girl bartender. She freaked out and in an immature response, stormed to the back before I even had time to apologize. My first thought was, ok, you bartend. You are going to get wet at some point pouring drinks. Then she stormed back and told her friend what happened. That friend looked over at me while I was trying to clean it with napkins and threw a towel at my hands as if to say, clean it up. I picked it up, wiped up the beer and tossed it back. What got me mad was after a good while she was STILL pissed and I could even see her mocking me and telling the manager or whoever he was then he laughs. I had had it when the towel throwing looked my way, I smiled, and she called the«wet» girl over to tell her, I guess how rude I was for smiling, which I will admit was a little bit of a smart ass smile by this time. So I made my way over to the end to make sure she was ok because this was obviously traumatizing for her. She said she was ok, obviously in the bitchiest way she could and then they acted as if I was forcing my way back behind the bar. Towel thrower starts yelling that I need to get back which makes wet girl start saying it too. By this time my husband was in a verbal altercation with them and we get kicked out. Fine. If it makes you feel better that your power only extends to telling someone they have to leave, no problem. We politely left, even shook the managers hand outside and took our money elsewhere. We won’t go back merely on the fact that Huey’s bartenders are not allowed to get wet from accidentally spilled beers on crowded Friday nights. I hope she recovered.

This place could be so good… But its not. I love the idea of a prohibition style bar except they didn’t actually implement the theme. Why are there video game machines and electronic darts? So many questions… Why is there a pool table in the middle of the bar that is incredibly in the way? Why is the stage in the front and the bar all the way in the back blocking the restrooms? Why is the bar so small when the place is so large? Why are there two giant pillars behind the bar that the bartenders always bump into? The drinks and service are fine but the layout is horrible. The bar should be all along the right wall as you come in. Everyone is always bumping into people in the back by the bar even though the front is empty! I can’t explain it…

By far my favorite bar on 3rd street. Even on crowded nights the crowd is generally happy, considerate, and just there looking for a good time. It’s a nice alternative to some of the other places on 3rd street. Karaōke on thursday nights is always a good time, and the bartenders are fast, friendly, and nice to look at. It’s a good place to party, or just to enjoy a drink, and good conversation. It always tops my list of recommendations to friends coming from out of town looking for a good place to go.

I visited Huey’s for the first time yesterday evening for Forum 35’s monthly social(I am the social chair) John Delgado greeted me and set me up at a lovely table near the entrance for sign in and put some dollahs in the juke box for our listening pleasure. I hurried to it to put some of my favorite jams on to set the mood… or to change my mood. An attitude adjustment is just what I had when I heard the likes of Nirvana, Michael Jackson, The Misfits, and Alice Cooper. Huey’s has some great happy hour specials including $ 2 domestics, $ 3 imports, $ 5 martinis and cocktails. Wine isn’t included on the happy hour but it is nicely priced at $ 7 – 11 a glass. I enjoyed a Fancy Lawnmower and a crisp Sauvingon Blanc. Over 50 were present representing the young professionals of Baton Rouge as the October Forum 35 Social was underway. Oh, also included in the venue was a dart board, pool table and other adult games. We all had a great time and we are sure to frequent this lil gem soon!

I went to Huey’s on a Friday night a few weeks before LSU started up for the semester. So, I’m not sure if I experienced the usual crowd or if it’s different during the school year. My friends and I arrived around 10pm and Huey’s was hoppin’! The crowd seemed to be mostly young-ish professionals. I didn’t feel too old or too young, which happens to me a lot in Baton Rouge! There was a guitarist performing cover songs on the stage, and a handful of people were dancing. Several people were playing pool, and there was plenty of room to stand. Seating was limited, but we did manage to grab a booth near the stage. I really liked that the music wasn’t too loud, and my friends and I could carry on a conversation without having to yell too much. My friends ordered drinks at the bar, and I ended up ordering a drink from a waitress who came by our table after we sat down. I inquired about a shot that I saw the people sitting next to us take, and the waitress said it was a «Red Panda” — half fireball and half rumchata. I love rumchata so I gave it a try, and it was delicious! My friends loved their Pimm’s cups and Moscow Mules also(however the bar was out of cucumbers for the Pimm’s cup). I will definitely return to Huey’s, especially since it’s right around the corner from Blend, which I love!

I think they want to be known as a Happy Hour kind of place b/c HH lasted until 9 or 10 when i was here.($ 2 domestics) The place looked a lot nicer when it was M Bar. Classier. Now I get the feeling it’s the place that old frat brothers are going to hang out together in, now that they’ve moved off campus and on to sleazy lawyer or salesmen careers. I did like the dart board though. It has cameras so you can watch you shoot and see a closeup of your shot in the board. Gimmicky, put I’ve never seen it before and thought it was pretty cool. One pool table. I might come back if i’m already downtown with a group of people and someone wants to go, but I won’t make a trip downtown just for Huey’s.
