A divey dive bar with a super friendly bartender. I’ve heard locals refer to this place as the«Old Beaver» in relation to the«New Beaver»(aka Beaver Inn) which used to be located here but is now a couple blocks away on Holly St. I stopped here to cross it off my list of downtown watering holes to check out, and I was one of 4 customers at the time. 2 were playing solo pool games in the back, and the other was a lady working her iPhone like an old lady knitting a sweater. They have happy hour from 4−8pm and a lot of fried snacks. They also have a lot of tables with black office chairs instead of typical restaurant seating. If I had to choose, I’d say I like the New Beaver better than the Old Beaver, but both are legit dive bars.

I liked the place because eveyone seems friendly to me. The bartender, a young very attractive gal, was so nice and funny and on top of things. Think her name started with a G I will return

While I’ve dabbled in my «seedy» establishments, this one unfortunately tops them all… warning, if you like to have fun and spend money at an establishment, avoid this place at all costs! My wife and I, along with(4) other friends that are in the mid 30’s stopped by after having dinner at the Red Light in town off state street, next to Pepper Sisters, boy, what a mistake. Please, make sure to avoid this place at all costs! It may appear like the: old beaver” but in reality it’s filled with a bunch of BS. Granite the drinks are cheap… but in the long run, is it really worth your time and money to hang out a place and be kicked out for«having fun»? My wife and I, along with(4) other mid 30 somethings were enjoying a couple of pitchers of beer and some pool, when the bartender slammed water on our table and said, «you are cut off». We laughed and thought this was a joke, considering we had just bought(2) pitchers and(4) shots equaling approximately $ 50 and that was the extent of our evening. Needless to say, things went downhill quickly when the bartendress with black hair said that other patrons were complaining and we were kicked out. She called the cops and without any explanation, she was calling the police and we needed to exit immediately. In the 37 years I’ve been on this planet and 16 of them I’ve participated in drinking alcohol, I’ve NEVER been treated so poorly before and would advise that anyone/everyone stay away from this place. I’m not new to Unilocal, but very rarely find it necessary to write a review that has treated me and or my friends/family so poorly. STAYAWAYFROMTHISPLACE and make sure to tell your friend and family the same! Even though the new Beaver isn’t the same as the«old» there are SOMANY other better places in town, than State Street Bar. It takes a lot for me to write a negative review, hopefully the owner(Brian) see’s this and make the necessary adjustments to make this a ordinary«college bar» with poor service, to a better than average bar, serving the people of Bellingham. STAYAWAYFROMTHISPLACEATALLCOSTS… the Horseshoe provide better service at half the cost and the Red Light, Green Frog, Etc… will provide you with a much better experience in Bellingham. Thanks for nothing State Street… so disappointed.

! My husband and I just moved to Bellingham from out of state. State street bar is a poor excuse for an establishment. I would never recommend this place, and would rate this establishment a zero out of ten… Stinky bathrooms, LESS than friendly wait staff(as stinky as their bathrooms) and certainly NOWHERE I would recommend an «out of towner» to check out … This place sucks, and so unbelievably unfriendly… After racking up a $ 100 tab we were asked to leave, and told by the black haired bartender that the cops were called because of complaints towards myself and 4 of our closest friends. In my 35 years I have never been so offended while enjoying time with friends in what seemed to be a predominately collage bar? Give me a break… Trust me, this place is not worth spending a dime on. Regardless if you are a collage student or someone just passing by, there is nothing worth stopping by for and far too many other options to choose from. Check out: The Red Light The Green Frog The Copper Hog All great establishments and worth while!

What looks like the Beaver, smells like the Beaver, but is no longer the Beaver? The State Street Bar! This location was home to the Beaver Inn bar(my favorite watering hole when I lived here) for 40 years. The owner purchased a building a few blocks away on Holly St. and took the ‘Beaver Inn’ business there, but for now he is also running the older establishment with virtually no changes other than the new moniker. I was actually a bit shocked at how little this place had changed since the last time I was in a few years ago– I had thought that a new name would mean a new business, ownership, etc. and had expected to find the place thoroughly cleaned and redecorated. This is absolutely not the case(to my delight)! The State Street Bar looks and smells just as funky as the ‘ol Beav, and they still serve PBR drafts and deep fried dill pickles. Win! The biggest difference I noticed on the evening that I stopped by was how empty the place was, but then again it was on a weeknight and between sessions at nearby Western Washington University. The thing that really amused me, though, is that the one customer at the bar when I arrived was the same guy who had served me drinks at the *new* Beaver the night before and on countless other occasions at this very location: Don the bartender! Guess that guy just couldn’t stay away. Me either! Pool tables in the back, dart board, air hockey table, jukebox, lots of seating, a few TVs, low ceilings and the reek of fried food, spilled beer, and years of tobacco smoke. Feels like home :)
