Sadly I must report that Tangerine is closed. I will miss the coffee and food, but will miss more the feeling of being a «regular». I wish there had been a chance to say goodbye. Best of luck, Robert. Tell Larry I miss him.

I saw this place when I was driving up Solano. I love trying new places but I rarely go back to the places I try unless it’s that good. This place is that good. Best quality of ingredients and always freshly made food. The soups here are to die for! I just got the carrot coconut soup and it was amazing. The owners name is Robert and he makes every visit personal. Awesome business. Make sure to go.

Great fresh food and a very nice owner. Robert makes healthy, homestyle food with love. He is always in a good mood and spreads his cheer to anyone that walks into his restaurant. Definitely worth checking out

i’m a regular here, but there’s a reason i come back each time, the food is fresh, made on-site and Robert the owner is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

The pros are that this place is fast, parking isn’t too challenging, the ingredients are fresh and overall on the healthy side. If you are ordering a sandwich your food will be ready quickly since they are often pre-made. This was fine by me since there are a lot of people coming in and out it is unlikely that the sandwiches sit for long. Sandwiches by themselves are $ 6 and if you get the two side salads the combo is $ 9. I ordered the turkey avocado sandwich since it is my favorite type of sandwich and it was just okay. I wasn’t that satisfied. If you are into bread there was a ton of it. There was not a lot of turkey or avocado which was disappointing since those ingredients are in the name. There was also arugula and this herb mayo spread on it. I’m not a fan of mayonnaise but I figured I would try it out first the way it was intended to be. The flavors were good but there was way too much mayonnaise. It overpowered the entire sandwich. For the two side salads I got the fruit(grapes, pineapple, and blueberries) and this tomato salad which was basically tomatoes, pepitas, and spices. I ended up putting the tomatoes in the sandwich so that it would be heartier. The sandwich was filling on it’s own. I did not need the side salads in addition. If you do like the food it’s a quick place that would be great for lunch. I thought it was too expensive for what it was and I could easily make a better sandwich. The bottom line: I don’t think I’ll be back here for lunch but maybe I’ll come back to try a coffee drink next time since they seem to have favorable reviews.

Great place for a healthy meal. The gentlemen that was working there was very polite. Not sure if he was the owner. Had their special salmon deal with two sides of your choice for $ 11. The salmon was fantastic and the sides were all really good. Definitely be back next time I come back!

The man working the counter, presumably the owner, was very sweet and explained all the options. The turkey avocado I got was delicious and well priced. My sister and mom got salads and they were very fresh and filling. Lots of good drink options too.

Berkeley is known for their wide selection of locally owned restaurants, so I decided to pick a random one and give it a shot! I was looking for something hearty and healthy so I figured a sandwich place would be a good place to check out. This place is pretty low key and the owner was a really friendly guy who gave us a «tour» of the choices on the menu. I went with the roast beef sandwich and the butternut squash soup. The roast beef sandwich was pretty simple except that it came with some seasoned bell peppers kinda like sun dried tomatoes which I enjoyed a lot! I kinda wished he toasted it for me before serving it because the bread was a little cold. The butternut squash soup was my favorite part tho, it was grainy with chunks of butternut squash. I can tell it was made fresh that morning and not some leftovers from the day before. Overall, I would give this place 3.5 stars. The sandwich was nothing too special but the service and soup was great!

Friendly neighborhood service with healthy lunch options. Sandwich combos are the best with either turkey avocado with herb mayo or a pastrami with bell pepper and olive tapenade. Match that with one of his daily soups and your good.

Saw this place on Unilocal across the street and decided to check it out. Definitely not the cleanest place, but I guess it is just old school like that. I ordered the pastrami. The bell pepper wasn’t sliced until I ordered it(awesome). Serving size was fine, nothing amazing. Bread was okay. Everything was just okay. For $ 10 I got a sandwich, chips and a small latte. The latte was actually the best part. If you like your sandwich shop clean/tidy/modern you wont want to come here, but if you want a sandwich and a latte why not? I would choose this place over a chain, so yeah. A-OK.

Maybe I didn’t order the right thing? I went there because of the high rating but I got a turkey avocado sandwich and it wasn’t the best I’ve had. I ordered it and it was already ready. Felt like I walked in a mini safeway to get one of those ready-to-eat sandwiches. Keep it up.

Robert is a dedicated shop owner, he’s extraordinarily friendly, and can talk with you about anything. The café itself is unconventional, with a curated menu of soup, salads, and sandwiches. Everything is well thought out, and well balanced. Just an all around excellent café.

Loved this little shop! Came in for a quick lunch with my husband — the owner is an absolute delight. Funny, smart, sings in the back while he makes your stuff, educates you on his offerings. really lovely little local salads and sammies. Food: had the brie sandwich. Would eat that sandwich every day from now on and be completely happy. The bread is great! Hubs had the turkey sandwich — also delicious. Salads tasted were the pasta(very good) and the tomato and pumpkin seed. Great showcase of simple, tasty ingredients. Super reasonable prices, too. Sandwich was more than enough for a hungry mid-twenties guy and was $ 6.

Great, unique sandwiches crafted by a friendly talkative Dutchman! I was the only one in the restuarant at the time since it was an off hour on a weekday. I told the owner to make me whatever he recommends, so he made a brie, walnut, argula, honey sandwich on Dutch. We talked for the entire meal about the Bone Room next door, NASA, the Netherlands, and the World Cup. Great Sandwich and extremely nice and funny owner, I had an excellent experience here. The only drawback is the limited menu.

Food that tastes this good is almost never this healthy. As someone who eats a lot of stuff that probably isn’t great for me, this is a welcome change. Also, Robert, the guy who works there is a lot of fun to talk to. I had the salmon special, I thought it was great and you will too. It’s all pretty simple and ingredient focused. It’ll leave you walking out feeling better than you walked in.

This is a great place for a reasonably priced lunch and great food. I highly recommend the honey Brie sandwich that has honey, Brie, walnuts and arugula. There are yummy salad sides that change daily. The cold Cumen carrots are great! A sandwich, two sides and a drink are usually about $ 10. Great place, you won’t regret trying it!

Finally got a chance to check out Tangerine on Solano Ave. His food was so fresh and delicious — I had no idea it wasn’t just a coffee and croissant shop. My daughter and I enjoyed his homemade wild salmon vegetable frittata! There was dill, leeks, capers, carrots, green sweet peas — we were in heaven! So gorgeous ! This place is a gem. Thank you Robert!

Charming service! The owner(Robert?) is very chatty, but he takes immense pride in serving his patrons and ensuring customer satisfaction. I ordered the wild salmon specialty combo, which includes a skin-on salmon filet served over mixed greens. It also comes with 2 very small servings of your choice of specialty salads and a few slices of French baguette. I try to avoid refined carbs, so when I asked if there was a whole grain alternative to the baguette, Robert offered to slice up some of the walnut levain he brought for his own lunch for me! He also included some dipping oil for the bread and made sure I was satisfied with the way the ingredients were proportioned in my mango salad :) My salmon, mango/arugula/blue cheese/sliced almond salad, and broccoli(very lightly dressed; hardly a «salad») were very simple if nothing special, but it definitely fit the bill for a healthy but satisfying lunch. Tip: Get here early for the best selection — several menu items were sold or running out by 2PM! Note: Prices have raised significantly from those listed on the website — salmon combo was $ 11, small salads $ 5, large salads $ 8.50, and single salmon filets $ 5.50. Shop is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Although a couple of miles away from campus, Tangerine is a decent place for lunch away from the hustle and bustle that is UC Berkeley. Parking is a non-issue here and there is no noise pollution; Tangerine is a nice quiet sandwich lunch spot. Ordered the Baby Brie with Honey Sandwich with mango salad and tuna salad. Girlfriend ordered the Oven Roasted Turkey Sandwich with fruit salad and creamy pesto pasta. When the owner was pointed to the sandwich possibilities I did not realize that those were going to be my sandwich. I expected a freshly made sandwich. I can easily overlook this fact if the sandwiches were excellent. The main problem I had with the sandwiches was the overly dry bread. My dry roll was saved by the creamy brie but my girlfriend could not ignore the dryness and forced me to finish her sandwich. With the plethora of lunch spots in Berkeley, I doubt I will come back again. What I recommend: – Baby Brie with Honey Sandwich

I was craving a healthy lunch today, and scoured Unilocal for somewhere new. I asked around to friends and everything pretty much pointed to Tangerine Food Bar so I had to go. The owner(?) behind the counter was amazingly friendly and helpful. I ordered a turkey sandwich combo with mango salad and creamy pesto pasta salad for $ 9. The price seemed a bit much, but I’d much rather give my $ 9 over for a healthy light and refreshing lunch than fast food. The sandwich was flavorful with the spread and avocado(and just the right size for me). The mango salad was delicious. Who knew mango, spinach, almonds, and gargonzola could go together so well? And the creamy pesto pasta salad was good as well. The friendly service and fresh and tasty meal is definitely worth the trek(for me) and the price.
