Ramen is horrible. Stay away! The boss instructs employees to only put in one ultra thin slice of pork. WTF?

We were excited to try this place based on the positive reviews that we’d seen on Unilocal. We ordered the ramen and sushi burrito combo. It was all completely disappointing. Where to start? Well, the tonkatsu ramen had no pork in it; the broth was thin and tasted no better than the soup you’d make from a 20 cent ramen pack. The noodles tasted like they came from the same ramen pack… no firmness to the noodles and no real flavor to speak of. The other ingredients in the ramen were not particularly traditional and consisted mainly of bean sprouts. You can’t charge $ 9 for a bowl of ramen, unless you actually are serving legit ramen… boiling down the marrow for the broth, making fresh noodles, etc. With so many better ramen choices in Boulder/Boulder County(Sachi Sushi in Niwot on Sunday and Sushi Tora on the weekends, among them), please save yourself from over-paying for this cheap imitation of ramen — you’d do about as well with a package of Maruchan from the grocery store… The sushi burrito was better, but not really anything to write home about. Also way over-priced for what it was. Moto-maki’s prices are about the same, but the quality and flavor of their rolls is much higher. The roll was small and listed for around $ 9; it felt like they were trying to borrow from a Japanese food concept, but mostly it came across as a cheap, ineffective imitation. I can’t see Scrooge Maki surviving for much longer. They’ve either got to drop their prices considerably or improve on the quality of their food. So disappointing. P. S. the hours listed on Unilocal(at least for Sunday) were not accurate… they didn’t open until noon, even though it says they open at 10AM.

The food is so good! Similar to Qdoba, but all things sushi. They have other Japanese food items but I recommend the giant sushi roll(sushi burrito). The server at the counter was so nice and made recommendations for which rolls to try.

I’m all for the latest trend of sushi burritos; it’s the perfect fusion of sushi rolls with the made-to-order style of burritos in restaurants like Chipotle and Illegal Pete’s. Scrooge Maki is a recent, albeit small, storefront addition to The Hill next to the CU Boulder campus. What it lacks in size, it makes up in fast service and individual customization of its menu. The ingredients are fresh and are a great portion size for the price you pay. For my visit, I chose the salmon burrito from their classic rolls and added ginger, bean sprouts, avocado, and cucumber along with spicy mayo and teriyaki as my sauces. I was really impressed with how well the flavors worked together, although I was hoping for a bit more spice in the spicy mayo. There are seasonal and fusion rolls available as well, with a sprinkling of other typical Japanese menu items like ramen or miso soup that you can add to your order. However, the menu is a bit confusing to read through if you’re a new customer to the place and took me some time to figure out how ordering worked. Extra brownie points for being a restaurant that is open during lunch and late into the night, so sushi burrito cravings can be satisfied at any time of the day. Punch cards are available for frequent visitors, which accumulates to a free burrito roll after 10 purchases. The staff is super nice too and made sure my meal was exceptional.
