Great food, reasonable prices and good service. Too bad there are not more locations. Friday and Saturday night they are BUSY. We will return.

It’s not all the time I can say I’ve given an establishment a 5-Star Perfect Rating, but I have to give On the Hook the recognition it deserves. My experience here was Perfect! My fiancée and I were staying in the area on a business trip and we were looking for someplace healthy to eat, but not too fancy or pricey. This seafood haven is tucked away in a very busy shopping center amongst many other food establishments, so it might be tricky to spot at first. My fiancée and I happened across here and it was a completely blessing. It was a very busy evening and we showed up without a reservation. Although it seemed hectic inside, they were able to seat us in under 10 minutes! The staff here are so super-friendly and worked in harmony and with efficiency to see that every customer was satisfied. Our waitress took a lot of pride in her work and in the establishment itself and we found out that it is family-owned. This explains the extra love we felt in the service and thought put into the environment. The décor here is nautical. Really! There were pictures, decorations and ornaments all representing some aspect of fishing-life and it all gave us a feeling like we were in some tucked-away seaport marina cantina, eating with sailors and fishermen ;) There are also several TVs on the wall for entertainment and one of them was specifically set to the Children’s Cartoon Network. Very family-oriented. Brilliant! Let’s get into the food shall we? No, literally! Most of the menu here is creole, so it’s customary to eat with your hands(almost expected). So it’s OKAY to get a little messy while eating and don’t worry, they have sturdy bibs for you, the table mat was dispensable and is replaced with every customer and at the end of your dining experience, they have a super-cool lemony-bubbly way of cleaning your hands!(See the posted videos on their profile). I had the gumbo and jambalaya, chased with a chilmango smoothie and topped with beignets and fried-bananas. I Got Hooked Up!!! All of it was perfectly seasoned, tasty and just plain fun to eat! If you’re in the area and like creole and seafood, I MUST recommend On the Hook. Good Eatin!

Similar to boiling crab in Brea??? Sure! And the best part is there is no crazy 2hour wait time! Came here on the hottest day of the week where the temperature was hitting above 100 degrees. Turning on the stove and cooking dinner at home wasn’t an option. So we decided to go and try on the hook for some Cajun garlic shrimp and noodles. Didn’t really know what to expect. Wasn’t sure if the AC was working but it was very hot on the inside which really annoyed us. We quickly finished our food so that we can go someplace that had better AC. Overall the food was tasty and the service was outstanding. If you like spicy I would recommend ordering the actual spicy and not the medium. The garlic noodles words anything close to the ones I’ve had at Crustaceans but they were still good. Hey, can’t get too picky for what you get in Brea. Just happy that this place is close to home and we have options!

Food was good, service SUCKED from the time we walked through the door. Asked to sit at a table by the wall and was told NO we had to sit at the tables in the middle. The entire time we were there, the table we wanted was available to sit at.(Thanks Myann) Brought in a small carls jr bag for my very picky 4 year old and was told I had to throw her dinner away because outside food was not allowed. So there we all sat eating except for my 4 year old. Shame on you On The Hook! We will never be back, and will also let all of our family and friends know what kinda service we got. Myann(the lead who shouldn’t be a lead) was beyond RUDE and does not need to be in a customer service role!

I was amazed at this place right from the moment i had walked in. The host was very polite and kind, and we got seated very quickly. Our server was sweet and very understanding and came shortly right after our host sat us down. My boyfriend and I got the thai tea and the blueberry lemonade, both very delicious! He got the garlic butter noodles with shrimp(they forgot the shrimp but cooked us on shrimp on the side and it was cooked to perfection, but it didnt come out until we were almost done with our food) BUT that was okay because our food came out pretty quick too. I got fried oysters(we subbed the cajun fries for the garlic parm fries), fried oysters was also cooked to perfection, i was sad that i didnt order more and save them for later!!. We got the clams with some sausages and corn, the«all hooked up» sauce was very good(looked extra saucy, but yay for extra saucy without having to be charged extra for it) The place was cute and very hip, spacious but small. LOVED the music, i was surprised at the type of music they played(includes artists and music that you wouldnt normally hear, for ex. flume, remixes from artists like trippy turtle, alina baraz, etc) I would definitely come back here again. They also had some good beers on tap, which is good for those beer enthusiast. I was also amused at how we got to wash out hands. It was lemon soap water and some dry ice and it would just bubble up and we just take the bubbles in our hand and rinse(though beforehand i did wash my hands in the bathroom).

Came here right when it opened on a Wednesday and it filled up within the hour. If you don’t want to order the usual shrimp or clams, they have different dishes that you can order as well. I’m not a big fan of spicy food so I was kind of disappointed to hear that their shrimp cannot be ordered without spice because of the way that they cook it. Aside from that, the service is great and the servers are very knowledgeable about their menu so they can answer any questions that you may have.

Wanted to try this place instead of going to my usual long wait Boiling crab or the Kickin crab. I got there and had to wait for 20 minutes to be seated. This place is not big at all and they do have outside seating too but it was cold that night . Finally seated and looked over the menu. Our waitress was Mai was very nice. She explained everything to us and gave some recommendations to popular items which was helpful because I had hungry eyes. She recommended the blueberry lemonade which was off the hook! It’s a must get, but there is no refills. I order crawfish, peeled shrimp, corn on the cob, and sausages. With the off the hook juices and mild. I also got gumbo and the cheese bread. The cheese bread was nothing special. Not much flavor literally just bread and they put cheese in the middle. Comes with a marinara dipping sauce . The gumbo was actually not that bad. It was pretty good. I would get that again if I come back Now on to the main course, my bag of goodies. To me the flavor was ok. It didn’t stand out to be better than boiling crab or kickin crab. To me it was just ok. The spiciness was just right for mild, not to hot but enough to have your lips tingle. The sausage were good and so was the corn. I’m shocked that they charge me $ 1.25 for a qtr of a corn. I thought one order would at least come with two but it’s only one corn. I think it needs more seasoning or flavor to out due their competitors. The coolest part is of this place is after you are done they out some dry ice in some water and the bubbles make your hand not smell like gsrlic! That stuff is amazing. Overall I gave it an average cause it really didn’t separate itself from the well known style of restaurant like boiling crab or kickin crab.

My besties took me here and I’m glad! We shared one pound of shrimp(they don’t let you get half pounds), 3 corns, garlic noodles, and garlic parmesan fries. Their sauce is soooo scrumptious!!! I couldn’t stop licking my fingers. The garlic noodles were pretty good. The noodles itself were nice and chewy but there was not enough garlic flavor. The fries took all the garlic flavor so get this instead! As for the shrimp, everything tasted very fresh. But what really stole the show were the beignets we got at the end. They tasted like they just fried them and the dough was crunchy yet airy! Topped with some light and most importantly not clumpy powdered suger and I was sold! I would totally just come here to get this… At the end, they give you some boiling soap and water to wash your hands, very cool! All in all, I would totally recommend the place over Boiling Crab!

O man! This place is so good! Hubby had found the place on Unilocal early last year, and we decided to check it out since we didn’t want sushi or Mediterranean. There was a bit of wait at the time(which is apparently typical, since we’ve visited half a dozen times since), but we were eventually seated at a table that was pretty clean(new paper always set out) and with menus. Now, as it’s been a year and a half, we know some of their menu items are now gone. For example, their spring rolls were pretty good! But they took that off the menu. But, it’s okay, as they still have the grilled plates(you choose a meat and a side), different appetizers(including calamari), AWESOME drinks(definitely get a lemonade of some sort; mint lemonade is bloody freakin’ gorgeously awesome), good selection of beer and wine, and a pretty awesome Happy Hour menu(5pm to 7pm… go for the $ 1 oysters!). Of course, their staple is creole/cajun mixing it up with pounds of food, such as clams, crab, shrimp, etc. Market price everyday. Now, while their food is good, and that their lemonade is to die for, we love their beignets! It’s something that they can absolutely NEVER get rid of because I feel it’s better than Downtown Disney’s Jazz Kitchen. Yes, you can just get it with powdered sugar and that’s it, but if you really want some wholesome awesomeness, then get it with the vanilla ice cream. Heck, I could totally imagine us coming here only for dessert. Seafood is always a bit pricey. As is, the prices are reasonable for seafood. Parking isn’t too horrid. I find it worse on a weekday night than any other time. Great staff, great food, EXCELLENTLEMONADEANDBEIGNETS. Ya, we’ll happily come back. :)

Okay, I love this place. With the plethora of Cajun restaurants in the area, sometimes it can be hard to distinguish which ones are actually finger licking good and which ones are major disappointments(looking at you, kickin crab). First off, I like that the place doesn’t smell like crazy on the inside. You almost don’t even notice the smell. I appreciate that they keep it clean and brightly lit. The service has always been A+++. The menu is pretty extensive and offers different types of dishes, if eating seafood from a bag isn’t your thing. I highly recommend the garlic noodles. It’s been a favorite of everyone I know that has tried it. Oh yes, the bags of seafood. I really enjoy their All Hooked Up(AHU) sauce. If you love garlic, this is the sauce for you. They also offer peeled shrimp for 2 dollars more if you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty. Tip: discounts on their oysters during happy hour Tip#2: get the watermelon drink! It’s deliciously refreshing. If you’re in the area and are craving good ol’ Cajun food, I recommend trying this place!

Bright and cheery Cajun eatery. Food here is delicious and service excellent. During my visit I had the shrimp, corn, potatoes, Cajun seasoned fries, and beignets with ice cream. The«All Hooked Up» sauce was delicious! We ordered it with our shrimp and it complimented the flavor of the seafood nicely. It was a touch sweet with rich savory notes from the butter, garlic, and celery salt/Cajun seasoning. There was more than enough sauce to coat the shrimp and sides. Medium spice level had a bit of a kick. Definitely had to take a mini break to catch my breath. Beignets were soft, fluffy, and waayyyy better than the ones I had at Disneyland. They were light and airy in texture! The ones at Disneyland are denser and don’t have a puffy center like the beignets from On the Hook. Ice cream was very disappointing. It was icy in texture and likely sat in the freezer and incurred some freezer burn. Even generic chain restaurants are capable of serving fresh ice cream. This place has a bit of a wait, but the hostess was helpful in giving us frequent updates. Service was just as pleasant. The waitress came by frequently to check on us and make sure we received everything in a timely fashion. They forgot part of our order and the waitress corrected the error quickly.

Hands-down the best beignets I’ve had in California. Most beignets suffer from an overabundance of dough, which causes them to be thick and heavy, and over time their outer coating of oil sucks up moisture from the air to give you a soggy experience if you don’t hoover up your beignet within a 5 minute time frame. Not so with On the Hook beignets. Each beignet fluffs up into a hollowish triangle, making it more a giant, fluffy potato chip than beignet. The crusted exterior is lightly crunchy with just a hint of moist bread in the middle, and the powdered sugar remains powdered without being absorbed by a moist exterior. Those who wish to have a «filling» dessert might feel cheated since this is so light and fluffy, but it’s perfect for someone like me who just wants a little something sweet after a filling meal. On the Hook also has some pretty amazing non-alcoholic drinks. Their blueberry lemonade is served with about a half a cup of blueberries muddled along the bottom with a boba straw made for sucking up small blue chunks of fruit. Their thai iced tea comes with a generous heaping of whipped cream and almost needs two hands to handle. Their chilimango is filled to overflowing and easily leaks bits of chili powder onto the wax paper tablecloth. When we went, the thai iced tea was slighly burnt, but a quick mention of this fixed the issue. The service here is excellent. I also like how they provide you with hand soap by throwing a chunk of dry ice into soapy water, which creates a soap-bubble volcano for you to wash your garlic-infected hands in. Like any crawfish boil joint, the waits here are long, and the final check is pricey, so plan accordingly. The patio area is nice, but be aware that no alcohol can be served in the patio area, and once the sun goes down the wind-chill can be uncomfortably cold. Everything else is about what you’d expect from a quality crawfish boil joint. Fresh seafood, boil base options, choice of standard sides, and an option to make your own salt/pepper lemon wedge dip. In our order of 5 different bags, we found the level of spice to be a bit inconsistent, as a mild order tasted like a medium, and a medium order tasted spicy. But for the most part the service was excellent. Did I mention the beignets? Mmmmm good.

We came here in celebration of my little sister-in-law’s birthday back in early February. This Cajun/Creole restaurant had been recommended to my sister-in-law by one of our nieces, who had been recommended here by one of her coworkers, who had been recommended here by a friend, and so on and so on. You get the picture. Despite its 4 ½ star Unilocal rating already, we would have never considered coming to On The Hook in Brea, if it weren’t for our niece’s recommendation. There just seems to be so many of these Cajun/Creole, Seafood-in-a-Bag type restaurants popping up these days. On The Hook separates itself from the rest by offering more food variety and a very upbeat, very efficient staff. Our server, Lom, was humorous from the start and handled our large party of 11 with ease. We replied that we were First-Timers here, but he knew very well we’ve been to all of the ‘Others’, as he was receptive to how we compared On The Hook to the likes of Kickin’ Crab and Boiling Crab. There’s more than just the average Seafood fare here. My brother-in-law ordered a large, medium-rare New York Strip Steak with Vegetables, which was nice and juicy. For Starters(ranked in order from Best first), we had the following. 1) Garlic & Cheese Flat Bread: This bread was stuffed with melted cheese, rather than layered with a cheese slice on top, and came with marinara dip. I could eat a dozen of these triangular-shaped bites! 2) Sweet Potato Fries: Browned to perfection and not oily. They were accompanied by what tasted like Thousand Island dipping sauce. 3) Fried Calamari: Medium-sized rings, not over or undercooked. Easy to sink your teeth into and not at all rubbery. They could have been a tad more crispier though, in my opinion. 4) AHU Noodles: Not too savory. Good as a complimentary dish, as it did not compete with the flavor of your main dish. On The Hook sells its seafood by the pound, so no splitting seafood a half pound for this and a half pound of that, which was OK by us because we came with big appetites. I ordered 1 lb. of Crawfish(although Seasonal, Lom explained that the restaurant is able to fly in some straight from a Louisiana farm, even during off-season) and Corn on the Cob in mild ‘All Hooked’ flavor. My fiancé ordered 1 lb. of Shrimp and Andouille Sausage in mild ‘All Hooked’ flavor. The flavoring was not as dense or spicy as compared to the other Cajun Style restaurants we’ve been to, but not as oily either. Still, it was a good combination of spices. The Seafood bags were served inside an iron skillet, in which you can empty out your seafood, a nice option for those that have an aversion to having one’s outside hands coming in contact with the greasy film of orange grit on the inside of the bags. My sister-in-law chose the Mussels. Although good, were a bit on the small side. My other sister-in-law and her boyfriend chose the whole, Dungeness Crab. Average size availability was 1 ½ — 2 lbs. that day. When served, its carapace came separate from the rest of its body, allowing the spices to soak in. They reported that it was good and that they enjoyed it more than the crab they’d had at the ‘other’ places. At the recommendation of my fellow Unilocal friend, Nick H., I ordered their fresh Blueberry Lemonade, which lived up to his claim of being ‘Amazing’! It was served with a wide straw. At the bottom of the drink were actual blueberries, which reminded me of Boba pearls, but not gelatinous and much better tasting. The kids each ordered Root Beer Floats, whose ice cream mustaches were indicative of their liking. Shane, another excellent, friendly server, was kind enough to corral more staff members to bid a fine Birthday wish to my sister-in-law. Together, they broke into song, which was an amusing Birthday musical composition of their own. They were successful in embarrassing Brenda, as Shane encouraged the entire restaurant to sing along with them. For dessert, we ordered the Beignets, which weren’t the same as ones we had tried at the famous Café du Monde in New Orleans, but were still some of the best we’ve ever experienced. Lots of powder sugar sprinkled on top. We ended our celebration with two carafes of lime water fused with dry ice(for that fog effect. Very cool.) to clean off our hands. My only complaints are that they only have a one-stall bathroom for both genders, no community sink for those that just want to wash off their dirty hands, and they do not accept reservations. Regardless, I would definitely recommend this over some of the other Cajun/Creole Seafood restaurants in the OC area and will be returning.

Friday night and I got hooked up all right: thank you OTH!
On the Hook is similar to a Boiling Crab/Kicking Crab, but with Happy Hour and craft beers on tap. With $ 1 oysters and $ 2 off craft beer till 7pm, you have plenty of time to get your appetizers and beer buzz on before moving to the main course. I recommend getting the seafood: that is the most popular item and you really can’t go wrong with anything you choose. They do have other entrée items such as jambalaya, but I heard it wasn’t that great: I noticed two people who didn’t even make it halfway through the dish, so I’m going to assume that sentiment is pretty valid. For all you first-timers, here is a tip to not leave hungry: order a pound of shrimp. I know a pound of food sounds like a lot, but honestly, a 1lb of shrimp is actually a decent amount to feed one. You have to keep in mind that the weigh includes all the shells, so a pound isn’t really a pound of meat and you find yourself still hungry(This becomes very apparently with craw fish or clams/mussels with their heavy shells) They don’t offer ½ lbs, which is unfortunate because it would be nice to mix things up and try different shellfish, so the alternative would be to do this meal family style. Overall, this is a fun place for happy hour and dinner. You do get messy, so it’s not a nice date or client dinner kind of place. The largest table seats 6, so no large groups!

Updated! And yes, I got to try the garlic noodles and beignets this time! Their garlic noodles are PERFECT. The right amount of garlic and flavor, so good! I also got to try their beignets with ice cream. Airy, light, fluffy pillows with vanilla ice cream! I would argue that Disneyland still has better beignets. Also, there cajun fries are new and improved now! Order this too! I brought a couple friends who have never been here and they loved it! Yay, I believe the hype!

I feel like many places that have crawfish are all the same such as Boiling Crab, Claws, etc. This place is not like those places. It’s even better!!! Yes, the wait can get pretty long but I think it is totally worth it. My boyfriend, friend and I waited about an 45 minutes on a Friday night(lent). The restaurant itself is not too big but not to small either. They also have outside seating. Inside, there are a few big giant TV screens with some cooking channel, sports, and cartoons. Love it because it really does accommodate everyone who wants to watch something! Let’s cut to the case… the food! Beer Batterd Fish and Chips($ 10.99) — Wild Caught Cod: I thought this dish was okay. Nothing to outstanding but the batter does have a nice crunch to it. Comes with regular fries too! Garlic and Cheese Flatbread($ 5.99) — I thought this was super cheese, which is the BESTPART! Dip it in the marinara sauce or even the sauce that comes with the crawfish and you’ve got your self a party in your mouth! Fried Calamari($ 8.99) — I thought this was one of the best calamari’s I’ve had. The breading was perfectly seasoned and when you dip it in the sauce, it just makes it that much more amazing! Very fresh too! Cajun Fries($ 3.99) — Perfectly seasoned. You can never go wrong with fries! Crawfish(MP: $ 13.99– ¾/2016) — I ordered the mild AHU sauce. Wow, one of the best and biggest crawfish I’ve had in my entire life. Everytime I keep pulling one out of the bag, they just get bigger and bigger! The meat on this creature was so big, it made me super excited!!! ;) Since it was lent, I didn’t get their sausage but I’m sure it’s amazing too! Shrimp: My boyfriend and friend loved the shrimp. I am not a big fan of shrimp so I do not have an opinion on it but I do know that they are ginormous as well! Thai Iced Tea– $ 4.50– Wow so good! I would come here for just a drink! It was not to sweet. You taste more of the tea which I love! Beignets: THESEARETODIEFOR!!! BESTBEIGNETS I’VEEVERHADINMYENTIRELIFE! I WOULDSOLELYCOMEHEREJUSTFORTHESEBABIES! THECINNAMONANDPOWDEREDSUGARJUSTMAKESITORGASMICALLYAMAZINGINYOURMOUTH! I would definitely come back here again for some delicious creole cajun food. Service was great too! Wish they would have some kind of system where they can call/text you 10 minutes before your table was ready because this place is in a shopping center so it would be nice to do some shopping to kill time while you’re waiting! Maybe in the future? I love the way you wash your hands too! Very innovative with the bottle, fizz, and soap!

Omg! I came here for the first time from reading a review by Frank T. I can’t believe that I lived down the street and came to this Petsmart in the same plaza for over ten years but never discovered it. The experience was AMAZING from the second we walked in till the second we walked out. Our poor waitress Yulia. We had millions of questions for her because the menu was super big and we had no idea on what to order. Yulia was super accommodating and patience with us, most importantly, she made some kick booty recommendations for us. I had the fish and chips with garlic fries. Honestly, the BEST fish and chips I’ve ever had in my entire life. It wasn’t drenched with oils, because it wasn’t pre made like many places I go to do. The garlic fries was to die for. My friend had the Chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it as well. For desserts, we had the fresh fried bananas with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What does that equal to? The answer is YUMMY4MYTUMMY! The place was really clean for being so busy and the price was really good for what you get. Overall, this place is definitely on my top 10 best place to dine 2016 list. Tips: Although it was super busy, our meals came out super fast. They must have a zillion employees in the kitchen. This is one place I am comfortable recommending to those of you who only has an hour lunch. Normally, you will need two hours to make it back to work on time for places like this. Just when I didn’t think On the Hook could get any better. It was great before, but now it’s simply amazing. We’ve been able to stop in during happy hour(Monday through Friday: 5PM– 7PM) and I’m happy to see how busy they’ve gotten. OYSTERS — HH $ 1/Oyster — Decent size oysters for only a buck during happy hour unlike some locations where they only serve the very small ones for the same price. Most importantly, they look and taste fresh. DRYRUBCAJUN/SPICY BBQWINGS — HH $ 0.75/Wing — You can fugetabout those anorexic excuse they call«wings» at BWW or Wingstop, this is how you do it. Large, fresh, crispy and juicy, I was shocked to learn a Cajun/Creole Seafood restaurant can make wings this good. The Spicy BBQ sauce was smooth and smoky with a hint of garlic and Cajun seasoning. I’m not a big fan of dry rubs as I like my wings saucy but the herbs and spices used are mouth watering. I never thought I would say this but the dry rub was waaay better than the Spicy BBQ sauce. GARLICNOODLES with ANDOUILLESAUSAGEANDSHRIMP -$ 12.99 — Always a dish I’m worried about ordering, most establishments have a tendency to be a little heavy-handed with the garlic and lead you to unknowingly kill vampires with just your breath. Starting at a base price of $ 8.99, for $ 2 each, you can add Beef, Sausage, Shrimp, or Clams as well as Vegetables or Chicken for $ 1.50. Our order was a delicious marriage of mildly pungent garlic noodles, buttery plump shrimp, and salty andouille sausage that had our taste buds singing. This perfect medley of land and sea is the reason why I wake up every morning. BEIGNETS — $ 4.99 — If you’re searching for a sugar high, this is the dessert you are looking for. Covered with a mountain of powdered sugar, these fresh and warm Beignets are crack, very much so when you pair it with mango ice cream. By the time you’re done with this«coco» plate, you’ll end up looking like Al Pacino from Scarface. Jazz Kitchen Express, eat your heart out! STRAWBERRYLEMONADE — $ 4.25 — A thirst quencher in all sense of the word, this drink will both refresh as well as make you pucker up with its sweet and sour flavors. Kudos on making the drink look like an actual strawberry. WATERMELONSPRITZER– $ 4.50 — Made with fresh watermelon juice and topped with watermelon chunks, this drink will bring you back to those hot summer afternoons when you only have ice cold watermelons to keep you cool. If you love watermelon, this is the perfect drink to wash down that salty cajun flavor. Like our previous visits, the service was on point. Our servers CJ and Christina were both amazing. Attentive, friendly, and an absolute pleasure to interact with. They will check on you regularly to make sure you have everything you need and give you enough time to relax at the end, never pressuring you to leave with the bill. CJ even helped me picked out an IPA that they recently received and let me taste a few before making my choice. So with all of its amazing qualities, there’s no wonder why On the Hook is always bustling. Be sure to get there early as things start picking up around the usual dinner rush times.
