Best sushi place in Riverdale, and I have tried them all. Fresh and delicious. Their other dishes are good too – I love the age dashi tofu, shrimp shumai, and beef sukiyaki. They are closed for renovations right now and I really hope they re-open soon!

Cockroach, wrong order, overcharged, not very polite personal… Terrific experience… I will not even consider this place as a food place in the future. Just ordered two rolls over the phone… wasn’t impressed by the person who took the order. The order was delivered within 10 minutes(a star). The price for one of the rolls on the receipt was higher than the price in the menu… When we opened the box… there were pieces from at least three different rolls and a small live cockroach! Never knew that Japanese cuisine has live cockroaches… May be it’s me though… If you like live cockroaches, this should be a good spot!

I live in the neighborhood where Planet Tokyo is located and for the longest time(since they opened really –we were one of their first customers the day they opened) I considered them to be the best sushi north of 72nd street. But one day all that changed when my wife and I ordered dessert after having a delicious meal there. I ordered the ice cream wrapped in a rice(I think) dough; I forgot what my wife ordered but it came sprinkled with something I can’t remember now. Nestled among the sprinkled dessert was a small cockroach. Needless to say we returned both desserts and ordered the check. When we pointed out the issue to one of the waitresses(Jesse’s wife in fact) she nonchalantly and we a slight smirk in her face told us that she was sorry and that the place had been fumigated the day before. She even said that because of the fumigation they had seen some small insects roaming around, as if it was something acceptable and not to be worried about. I could not believe I was hearing that, but everything turned to worse for us when we saw that she had actually charged us for the dessert that had the bug in it. I decided to pay the check and right there, without saying anything, left and swore never to come back. It has been over a year now and I don’t regret the decision, even though this being Riverdale, there are not too many choices when It comes to good restaurants. I probably should have said something, but I think it was Friday night and I was extremely tired and decided it was not worthy to say anything. I am sure had I said something to Jesse he would have taken it off the check, or even offer us something else. I can’t believe in this day and age that small restaurants like these do not understand how expensive and EASY it is to lose a repeat customer.

Ordered the roll special lunch deal with a California roll and a salmon avocado roll. I thought it would just be the maki but it actually came with a sushi appetizer, gyoza, and miso soup(or salad)! The sushi was a little warm but the taste was fine. According to GrubHub there was supposed to be free delivery, but there was an extra $ 5 charge on my bill. I was planning to tip a few bucks before I knew about the delivery fee, but I had to give the delivery guy a few dollars’ worth of quarters and didn’t have any extra cash. He seemed upset… wish I’d known about the delivery charge beforehand!

Planet Tokyo would be famous if they were located in Manhattan. The sushi is top-notch and Jesse will go out of his way to serve you the best of the day. The salmon is my favorite. Try the white tuna, the Magic Tower, or the Black Pepper Tuna Appetizer. You can’t go wrong with anything, though. Jesse has many inventive dishes. The Bento Box B is a feast and is one of the best values anywhere. For under $ 20 you get a 5 course meal. Go and drink lots of sake(a great value too) and enjoy yourself more than a night at the bar. Always finish with a piece of eel.

DELICIOUS!!! A tad pricey, but you definitely get what you paid for! My wife and I ordered delivery, I had the salmon teriyaki Bento box, my wife the House Love Boat for 1. It cost about 55 which is a bit steep, BUT: 1– sushi/sashimi were fresh 2– sides were excellent 3– portions MORE than adequate We were stuffed and done with HALF our meal! Definitely will be ordering from them in the future!

Show me the Shogan! SHOWMETHESHOGAAAAN! According to Cuba Gooding, Jr., a shogun is a general. Well in THIS shogunate, the Shogan Roll IS the shogun. Except instead of subduing barbarians, it subdues your hunger. It is one of the most wholesomely delicious rolls I have had in all my time as a sushi eater. From the menu: SHOGANROLL Lobster salad, avocado, shrimp tempura wrapped with edamame sheets. The Shogan Roll goes great with soy sauce, spicy mayo(available upon request, even with take-out or delivery), or just by itself. In my experience with Planet Tokyo, the rolls don’t taste nearly as good when delivered. I’ve given this place a lot of chances, and most of the time the rolls end up tasting old and stale(Shogan Roll shrimp was not very fresh, sticky rice). Bottom line: for better-tasting food, walk there and get take-out, or dine at the restaurant. Other rolls I have tried in this most recent delivery include the Bronx Roll, Volcano Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll. From the menu: BRONXROLL: Spicy crunch tuna with eel & avocado over top. The tuna was tasty(at Planet Tokyo it comes in a purée with some nice chunks in it). The rice, eel, and avocado were all up to par. From the menu: SHRIMPTEMPURAROLL: Shrimp tempura & avocado. Again, in this and almost all of my past delivery orders, the shrimp was not tasty at all and the tempura part was not crunchy, but rather soft, resembling the skin on a old roasted chicken drumstick(gross). BOTTOMLINE: Everything goes well with spicy mayo! Wait, no, the bottom line is to go here for good food, but make sure you either pick it up or eat at the restaurant! Delivery will be a disappointment. Unilocal me Unilocal you. Unilocal ME! Unilocal YOU! P. S. You had me at ‘Hello’ ;)

This place is a solid 4 stars. Service, food and décor do not disappoint here. The miso soup here is not bad. The Bronx Roll is popular here and I suggest it is worth trying. It’s got tuna, eel and avocado on it. It has a melt in your mouth aspect to it. I had the spicy maki combo which has california, tuna and salmon rolls. The rolls were good but my only complaint is I’d rather have something other than the california roll in a «spicy» combo. It was the only roll in there that didn’t taste noticeably spicy. I would definitely come back here and recommend trying it out.

One of the many restaurants on Johnson Ave. We have been looking for a solid local sushi spot, and this might be it. I was a little nervous when we waked in on a Friday night and the place was empty. Also, I’m used to great sushi on every corner in Manhattan. The prices were great, including a Saporro for 2.50 and Sake for 3.50. The sushi was fresh and pretty standard, and we went all out with the«Party roll platter.» The only annoying thing was that the menu said 14 rolls, and it wasn’t. Before we ordered, we asked the waitress which rolls it came with and she said«a lot.» I asked her if it was really 14 different one and she said«Yes.» It wasn’t. It was 7 different ones, doubled. One of the rolls was Philadelphia, which both me and my boyfriend hate, so that was 14 rolls wasted. Annoying. Otherwise, good sushi, good service, and good prices. I’m sure we’ll be back.

Short version: I highly recommend the Shogan Roll and the Bronx Roll.* Long version: This place is wonderful. Their stuff tastes really fresh all the time. The rice is also tasty. They are really quick with orders, especially for pick-up. Usually they have an order ready in 10 – 15 minutes. Their spicy tuna actually is spicy. It’s not pureed like at some places, but they do put a nice chunk of tuna in it. The eel is also definitely something to try. At some places, it tastes weird and they slather it with a ton of sauce, but here it’s really soft and buttery, and there’s not too much sauce on it. Shrimp tempura is delicate and crunchy with a good amount of shrimp. Also, try some rolls with lobster in them, if you can. They are generous with the size of their rolls. You will definitely be full after two designer or three regular rolls. I can think of many places where this would not be the case. *From the menu: Shogan Roll: Lobster salad, avocado, shrimp tempura wrapped with edamame sheets. Bronx Roll: Spicy crunch tuna inside with eel, avocado over top. I haven’t tried their competition in the neighborhood, but I doubt it can get any better than this.

I’m not sure if this place is good or if I’m just a fan because they’re the only Japanese choice in my neighborhood. Some of the bento boxes come with sashimi(not california rolls that some of you«sushi» eaters expect), and it’s always been fresh, so far. The restaurant is cute and there is a small private area toward the back for parties larger than 4 people. I’m always cautious when I come here, but I’m not sure why as I’ve never had a bad experience… yet. It could also be the paranoia that I feel when going to any sushi restaurant because I’ve had bad sushi and it ain’t pretty: We’ll see, I’ll continue to patronize this joint but I got my eye on them…

i held off reviewing this place until I had some solid backing by trying the sushi/sashimi combo bento box a couple of times to gauge the quality. I am glad that I did. The food here has been consistently good, the srvice is very attentive, and the prices are reasonable. I have heard terrible things about the neighboring sushi place, and I came here with some reservations, but I was alleviated to discover that the food is consistenly fresh, good, and made to order. I particularly enjoy the vast sake selection and the fact that I chose a sake that was more expensive than the one that the waiter convinced me to get due to her personal preference. If you want sushi in riverdale, look no further.

Great Japanese Place! I’m a consistent customer:). Their Sashimi is to die for. It’s always so fresh. The service is always great and quick. The seaweed salad is always a must order. Their specialty rolls are fantastic(try the volcano roll). Very reasonably priced for the high quality. Definitely one of the top japanese restaurants around.

I totally disagree with David. I believe this Japanese restaurant is sooo much better than the one across the street. David, no offense, but you need to get better taste buds. Plus you’re obviously an asshole. Do you think you are the only avid sushi fan on the planet and they you’re opinions should count for everyone? They don’t. Your opinion sucks. Why don’t you keep it and your advice to tell other people to get better taste buds to yourself. Buttmunch. No offense. I had a excellent experience here. We rented the tatami room and had a blast. The fish was fresh and good. The second time I stopped in, I didn’t have time to stay. I ordered my meal which took 15 minutes to receive. There wasn’t anyone else in there but I could see that the chef was taking care of called in take out orders. Good service to get my meal so quickly when they had other ones to take care of. I have to laugh some more about David’s pronouncement that because this venue opened after the one across that street that it is dupe of the original. Which original is that? The first sushi spot is in Japan. The sushi spot across the street must be a dupe of that original. Thanks David for such an amusing if asinine review. Thanks Planet Tokyo for the fish.

What a relief. Honest to goodness sushi in the Bronx that doesn’t taste like you picked it up at the local gas station mini mart. It’s not just good enough for sushi in the Bronx, it’s good sushi. The menu is varied and has four kinds of soups, five kinds of salads, eighteen hot appetizers and seventeen sushi appetizers, bento boxes, terriyaki, tempura, katsu, udon, soba and sushi entrees. The tuna tar tar appetizer is an event. They have quail eggs to top off your masago. If you’re a tempura fan, try the Shogun Roll, lobster, avocado, shrimp tempura or the Samuri Roll, spicy crunch tuna, avocado, shrimp tempura. I’ll be back to try each of the fourteen types of specialty rolls. Dessert can be a simple plate of fruit or ice cream or tempura ice cream or, my fave, mochi ice cream. Fans of yokan will be happy to know that bean cake is also on the dessert list. If you’re in the neighborhood around lunch time, try the lunch specials. Oh yeah.
