Café Six is now Caffe Sixe. With new hours and a new name, MIT’s most exclusive café just got hipper. Rumor has it that the market for free coffee and functional synthetic chemistry had fallen on hard times, leading Caffe Sixe to lose its lucrative edge in this hypercompetitive industry. Low morale caused many baristas and patrons to abandon the business, hitting rock bottom after severe flooding damaged the café and nearly drowned one of the baristas. But by scaling back their hours a little under the demands of their capricious-but-shrewd Romanian angel investor, the remaining core of dedicated baristas is redefining the meaning of «caffe» in all its forms. Caffe Sixe has managed to elevate the quality of their brewing, the diversity of their roasts, and the intensity of their discursive attitude to a new level, as my recent after-hours conversation on isotopically-enriched zinc metal organic frameworks with the head barista really drove home to me. Even if you lost interest during the antediluvian times, consider bringing back your mandatory donations back to Caffe Sixe for your free cup of coffee. Because remember: Café Six is now Caffe Sixe.

Café Six is a readily-accessible, quick-serving small joint that offers the daily doses for mostly graduate students and post-docs around the area. It is a popular hang-out place for small chats and as well as casual scientific discussions. Although a bit difficult to find on the weekends, the café is near an open roof that has an incredible view of the Charles River and the Boston river font. It is one of those niche places I will be happy to tip a quarter every time.
