I saw the good reviews and wanted to try a new place. I was attracted by the sustainability and consciousness professed on their website. What I found was some of the worst service I’ve ever had. I had to ask for the complimentary soup, and my guest ordered seaweed said that took 10 minutes to arrive. While eating her salad the tea finally arrived. There are 7 tables with at least 2 servers. Only 5 tables were full. As we were growing faint from hunger and wondering if the quality of the food would match the inflated price, I looked at my watch to see that after 30 minutes we had yet to have any food. We asked for the Salmon Hole roll be packed to go. I had time to sample the to-go food as we further waited for the server to prepare our check. My response was«Meh». It was just ok. Not worth the wait or the price. We will not return. I’m now enjoying proper service and amazing food at Big Tuna.

How amazing is Aonami? … I est here once a week at least. Its so good and the happy hour makes my college budget smile. We go in during happy hour, order some amazing raw, cooked and/or vegan rolls and then our favorite drink: 50⁄50. It’s half plum sake and half original filtered sake. Its sweet and goes down like nothing. Highly recommend. The complimentary miso(which is vegan and not fishy tasting!!!) Is a cherry on top. I think I know almost everyone there by name. Mu favorite waitress is Anna, she’s hilarious and we have fun laughing about shared named. She’s really a sweet heart… like the rest of the employees! My favorite vegan roll: the 99, duh Or the 6th, that smoked tofu and almond butter… yum! Cooked roll: probably the Walnut, sweet yet savory Raw roll: the Normal — by God, it is so unique and satisfying. Otherwise the Orange or Hazel, both simple and yummy! The sumo rolls are also great! Don’t forget to ask for a side of spicy no mayo ^_^

I love coming to Aonami! They probably have the best happy hour in Chico, a full sized roll for only $ 8? I’ll take it. The staff is always super attentive and quick and the complimentary miso soup is amazing. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is most of the time my rolls come out at room temperature not cold like I feel sushi should be. Not a deal breaker though, if I can I get 2 rolls and some edamame for under $ 20 I’ll be back!

In from out of town, pleasantly surprised. My husband and I live on the central coast of California, so we’ve been spoiled with access to fresh fish. Aonami was a pleasant discovery in landlocked Chico. Fresh taste and quality ingredients(many of them local) as well as a friendly staff. Don’t let the small storefront in the tiny strip mall deceive you. The smoked mackerel nigiri is a MUST.

Delicious sushi and efficient staff; paid $ 20 and actually left sushi feeling really full! Also, their hot tea is only $ 1 and is really delicious. Last but not least, you feel good about eating there because it’s sustainable!

I know what you’re thinking… Chico and sushi!!! What am I doing!!! To my surprise, the sushi was extremely fresh and the rolls very well prepared. The salmon sashimi was buttery and smooth — very fresh! The scallop roll had perfectly cooked rice(not overcooked like most rolls at other places) and the scallops were sweet, naturally. The sushi was excellent. My only gripe was how long it took for the food to come out. There were only 2 others there for lunch, but I guess they were filling a substantial pick-up order. Still, I would think they would service the ones who are in the restaurant for over 30 minutes waiting for the food? I would definitely go back whenever I’m in town, despite the long wait.

I came here super excited for some good sushi based on the reviews I saw on here, but it turned out to be the nastiest thing ever! The bacon sushi is disgusting, and all my other rolls were beyond room temperature. I recommend Enjoy Teriyaki for better cheap sushi!

It was our first time going to this place for sushi and was very very disappointed in them. I see the reviews and they say it’s very good but I didn’t not experience that. We ordered two plates, California park and cedar. They were poorly rolled and very warm which they shouldn’t have been tasted like they left food out and than made our order. We will not go back, there are other sushi bars around Chico for much better taste and prices.

Wonderful environment, staff and food. A very welcoming environment and delicious Skyway roll. Did I really just get a large Sapporo, large sake, a delicious roll and two miso soups for 25? Yes. I definitely recommend this place!

What a great way to start your day. Fresh and sustainable fish is always great for everyone. Didn’t think too much about it when we walked in, but the sushi chef proved us wrong. If you’re looking for healthy, delicious, and inexpensive sushi this is the place. Keep yourself updated because they are moving to a bigger location for more people to serve. Keep it up!

Sustainable sushi? Complimentary miso soup? Vegan rolls? Yes, please! I like that they have a vegan roll menu to accommodate«the less murderous among us» in the area. For appetizer, I’ve had the lemon and salt edamame, which is surprisingly flavorful! The 5th roll, made of tempura yam, avocado, and sesame seeds, had a subdued sweet chili glaze. Simple and delicious. The 8th, made of pumpkin, asparagus, daikon sprouts, had crunchy shallots sprinkled over them, while the 32nd had a unique combination of asparagus, avocado, mango, and daikon sprouts with a dash of sesame seeds! The 20th roll, which has asparagus, avocado, cucumber, daikon sprouts, and crunchy shallots, had a nice kick to it with the spicy miso sauce. Next time, I’ll join the Sake Club there, so that I can purchase a $ 10 Masu(sake cup), and leave my personalized cup on display behind the bar! Pretty neat. Pro tip: Small space, so make sure to place dinner reservation early!

If your craving sushi this is not the place. They don’t really have a variety of fish in their rolls, and I had the skyway role it does not taste or look appetizing. I was so disappointed since this place is rated so high. It was a waste of money and appetite! Never coming again.

Chirashi — three of four fish were fresh and buttery. Rice was super, super dry as if pulled from the fridge. As a Japanese food foodie, no. Not okay. Gyoza — fully fried. Not my style. Price point is good for what you get, but not 4.5 stars for me.

The sushi chefs were very personable, our waiter was attentive and the Rolls we ordered were amazing! Atmosphere very pleasant! Music was playing but we didn’t need to raise our voices to converse. Saturday evening I would recommend reservations… but there are fun drinks to choose from while you wait.

The staff was very friendly and nice. You will be surprised to see a menu that will satisfy everyone(bacon rolls). The restaurant is small so you may have to wait a bit to be seated, especially with a group of 4 or more. As for the food, to start off, the miso soup was very bland. It also wasn’t hot enough. I asked for the chef’s special(shrimp and avocado inside, shrimp tempura on top with a spicy chili sauce on top) and that was just ok. The sauce made the tempura taste soggy. But the garlic parmesan edamame was yummy.

Best in chico hands down. Don’t order off the menu if you want the best experience. Just ask Jimmy to make what he thinks you want and you will always win.

Absolutely superb. Jimmy is a mad genius and I highly recommend ordering chefs specials and letting him make grand concoctions for your unprepared taste buds.

This place was delicious. I found it through a search on Unilocal for sushi. Pros — free miso soup with your order — good selection of rolls(vegan, raw, cooked) — options for non sushi eaters — they ask if you want Wasabi or ginger, which is nice cause I never eat the ginger! Possible con — university area so parking can be a hassle — small location, maybe 26 chairs — non of these bothered me but I can see how it might bother some The two rolls I got(the Nord, the Skyway) were SO good! One was raw, one was cooked. The tea was delicious. And the miso soup was great! I definitely recommend checking it out :)
