Kroeger & Sons Choice Meats

AWFUL service. My boyfriend and I LOVE going to Findlay Market for fresh produce and supporting local business, however, after the service we experienced, I’m not sure I care to support this business anymore. The girl behind the counter, who had a nose ring through the middle, being completely unprofessional to the patron in front of us and then turned sweet when she realized who they were– it was beyond anything I’ve ever come across. She approached my boyfriend and said «What do you want» in a very short and impatient tone. When he paused for a brief moment, she looked to the person working with her and said «He stood at the counter for 20 minutes, you’d think he knew what he wanted by now»… in reality we had only been there for maybe 3 minutes and were just waiting for our turn. If you’ve been there, you know that there is a large selection so it can take a few minutes to figure out what it is you want. After that, we ordered and she handed us the bag and we handed her our credit card. She forgot to add up our total, so I placed the bag back on the counter for her. She snatched the bag and proceeded to call be a bi***, out of the blue. I hadn’t even said a word to her. When we finally got done paying, which at this point we were highly considering not even purchasing anything anymore, we got our bag again and as we turned to walk away, she called my boyfriend an a**hole. I’ve NEVER been anywhere where it’s ok to cuss out a patron. I was a bartender for 10 years and dealt with some really awful people and never had the audacity to even consider cussing out a patron who was trying to support the business. I’ve tried calling the business to let them know that this is how their employees are treating people, but every time I call, there never seems to be a manager who is available or it is the same rude girl who picks up the phone, who just hangs up on me. Hopefully they see this an know that they will be losing people left and right if they don’t clean up shop and start coaching these people to provide better customer service.

We visit Kroeger & Sons usually once a week. They have the biggest and best selection of lamb and sausages around. Their price on lamb is way more reasonable than anywhere else. The lamb cubes and legs are great quality and always fresh. The sausages are handmade with natural casings. They have 35+ different varieties. A favorite of mine is the camel sausage. But it’s rare that they have it. The North German franks are my favorite hotdog ever. They have an awesome snap when you bite into them and are juicy. It’s definitely a shop I recommend shopping at!

Helpful staff. Got some delicious Italian chicken sausages. Another shopper told me she’s been coming to Kroeger every week for the last 30 years! Support a local business and get great sausages as well.

Lots of great homemade sausages, plus they offer great Detroit-​made hot dogs.

The only place in the city (jungle jims out in the burbs have them prepackaged) I’ve found that sells Merguez sausages — a mix of lamb, beef, and north African spices. These things are my absolute favorite, and Kroeger makes the second best I’ve ever had (Marrakech makes theirs in house), but the best you can buy (Marrakech wont sell me any of their in house sausages!). I’ve tried merguez from different sources in different cities, so believe me when I say their nailing a relatively rare cuisine is very impressive.
But more impressive, and the reason I am taking the time to review them is the customer service. I walked down, and it was a pretty hot day when I arrived. I asked the staff to hold the purchase in their cooler for me while I finished shopping, which they were more than happy to do, and then when I went to pick it up the gentleman working took the time to put together two ice packs and triple wrap the sausages and ice — so there was no chance it’d melt into my backpack.
Price was pretty good for the quality, nearly $ 8 for 3 very thick sausages that cooked up nicely on the grill.
Overall — Great shop. I can’t speak for their ground meats, other options, whatever, but the Mergue sausage is on point.

Kroeger & Sons has the best selection of pork in the city. All of the sausages are made in house and fresh weekly. Every time we have a cookout we come here to load up on brats, metts, and some other fun sausages for sampling, and every time people ask where we got them because they want to buy them.
Their pre maid entrees are awesome as well. The stuffed pork chop is amazing and can easily feed two people. I highly recommend you check it out next time you’re at the market. Easily one of my top vendors at Findlay.

I can’t say that this place was great, but I wish I could.
Benefits: the staff was very friendly, and quick (especially for a Saturday). They didn’t talk to much, a kind of get to business so we can serve you quickly, and get you on your way — that was great.
Price: It was a little pricier that I was expecting. I got 8 sausages for nearly $ 18. More than $ 2 per sausage… not sure it was quite worth it.
The Sausage: I got the Irish Potato Sausage… it was not all that great. I thought it would go well with spaghetti, but it just didn’t quite work out. I don’t think it’s too popular since there was not much of it at the service counter, but I thought it would be worth a try. I also go Hot Italian Sausage — it was tasty and hot, exactly what I wanted. However, most of those sausages had gristle in them, and not just a little piece — some chunks that were nearly the size of a quarter… yikes.
I’m hoping to at least try it a second time to hopefully be satisfied, and do a review update, but until then…

I’ve been coming here for many years and was worried when the Kroeger brothers sold the shop. Not to worry! It is truly better than ever. While I am addicted to the stuffed pork chops, I have tried almost everything they offer and it is all great.

I love, love, love — did I mention Love? the Kroeger & Sons Choice Meats stand at Findlay Market!!! My favorite are the Chicago and Italian super hot and hot mets! They are simply packed with amazing flavor and pretty lean on the fat. They are great for grill outs or for a meat sauce on top some home made pasta (Nom Nom!!).
The next favorite, or maybe the first?, is the nitrate free pepper bacon. I love my meat! and bacon is king, so you can’t go wrong at Kroeger & Sons Choice Meats! Stop by, but if you see me and there is no more pepper bacon left — i will be angry! (jk –maybe?!)

So. Many. Choices.
It’s like a candy shop for meat lovers. And did I mention the variety? I’ve been to Kroeger & Sons a few different times, and it seems like each time I get something different. This past weekend, we got some things to throw on the grill, as well as a few other things to have for later.
Anyway, we tried the Parma, which was new, and it was pretty good! I could tell the fennel they used in the sausage was really fresh because it was prominent. Not in a bad way, but you could definitely taste it.
I like going to Kroeger & Sons. They’re fast, friendly, and they have bacon. :-)

Yum! Tried the Parma, the Chicken BBQ and the Basil Chicken, so yummy! Will definitely be back to try some more delicious sausages!

It really is a Meat-​Lovers paradise as Alex mentioned, I told the girl behind the counter I was making Jumbayla and for the number of guests and she then grabbed the sausages to use. These workers really know their product also. Everyone is so friendly!

Excellent variety in available sausages! We went with some bier metts, bbq chicken, and buffalo chicken sausages. All of them were very tasty. Next time I will probably go for even more adventurous types of sausages.

Findlay market is one of the greatest things about Cincinnati, and Kroeger and Sons is one of the vendors that makes Findlay great.
Given that there are a lot of other reviews already, I just want to highlight the bacon (wow), the breakfast sausage, and the stuffed pork chops.

A meat-​lovers paradise … That pretty much sums up this review. Seriously, I’m really not sure I can say any more than that — but I’ll give it a try anyway (I do love hearing my own voice, after all — even if it’s in my own head).
Kroeger & Son’s (not to be confused with supermarket chain Kroger, although everyone always tries to spell them the same way. That’s why it’s not coming up in your search when you try to check in here, btw, heh) is a stand at Findlay Market and contains the topes choise-​Aiest meat of them all. Lines and lines of slabs of almost everything: pig and lamb and goat and meat and meat and meat (although every once and a while you’ll find it doesn’t have something you need, like beef, but there are other vendors in the mart that carry that if you must have it).
The pride of Kroeger, though, is it’s pork — especially is sausage. I’ve been told on multiple occasions that the owners are master sausage makers, trained in Germany. I have no idea if it’s true, but it certainly tastes true! Their sausage is unbelievable, and when cooked at the hands of a master chef, there may be no better meal in the world.
It can be a little crowded at times at the stand — and a lot crowded at other times — but that’s just the nature of Findlay Market. There are a lot of people and not a lot of space. Wait you turn and you’ll get to the front of the line. Then, the staff are happy to help you and answer any questions you might have, unlike other stalls in the market that seem like they want to get you in and out as fast as possible. Not here, not here at all.
Their prices = reasonable! Not cheap but not overly expensive either, and certainly under priced for the quality of food. All good, all good. I know I’ve read it on here before, but having a BBQ? This is your first and only stop.

I can’t begin to write a review of Kroeger and Sons that’s better than David R.‘s, and won’t try to. But let me say that this Findlay Market meat emporium is a preposterous paradise for sausage aficionados. And if you were ever planning to kill yourself by athero– and/​or arteriosclerosis, this might be the perfect place to start.
Supposedly the founder of Kroeger and Sons trained in Germany as a «Master Sausage Maker,» and I believe it. The variety and quality of the sausages is just unbelievable. It is a veritable sausage museum, but you get to take the exhibits home and consume them for very reasonable prices. Not surprisingly, the metts and brats are terrific, but Kroeger does great stuff with non-​German sausage as well. (Brit, Italian, Louisianan, etc.) After we walk away with our latest sausage selections, I feel pangs of regret for all the sausages left unchosen. (We don’t get here nearly often enough.) After buying here, you’ll never be fully satisfied by a pre-​cooked and/​or grocery-​store sausage again.
Kroeger also offers some cuts of meat that aren’t necessarily easy to find at the grocery store: lamb shank, goat, etc. Plus: The staff is patient and helpful.
So great.

Holy cow! Er, pig too, I guess. Er, chicken? Lamb? Turducken? You bet! How about camel? Yes, holy camel! The point is – what a glorious orgy of meat!
I’ve seen «sausage shops» in Chicago but none of them hold a candle to the selection at Kroeger. I counted FORTY-​TWO different kinds of encased meats, plus a few more loose varieties. FORTY-​TWO! They had all the usual suspects, plus plenty of chicken versions for a healthier option, and numerous specialty sausages. I walked away with about a dozen (for only $ 18.81!), sad that I could not fit more into my little cooler for the long drive home.
Chicken basil: B, a little dry but nice flavor
Chicken barbecue: B+
Hungarian: A–
Hot Italian: A+; FINALLY a place that makes hot Italian sausage actually HOT. It’s got a nice flavor overall, not just dominated by heat. One of the best in the land, take my word for it.
Hot Chicago: B+; I’m FROM Chicago and I’ve never heard of a Chicago sausage. But, it was pretty good. It seems like a cross between a bratwurst and an Italian. This one was a little gristly but nice and hot.
Vidalia onion: B; very porky and oniony, but salty too. I didn’t like this one much the first night, but the next night I found that it pairs up beautifully with some barbecue sauce.
Hot mett: B; my first time eating mettwurst, so I have nothing with which to compare it. I found it very salty and a lot like ham in color, texture, and taste.
And how was that camel sausage? Well, in a word… terrible. I am not afraid to try exotic meats and was in fact eager to add this one to my list. But this thing simply tasted awful. it stunk up my whole house and I couldn’t choke down more than one bite. It seemed barely seasoned, so I’m going to have to blame this one on the camel rather than on Kroeger. Next time I’ll try the turducken… and ten or twelve others.

Any place that has such a large selection of high quality raw sausages pretty much gets an automatic five stars from me. The staff behind the counter is very helpful and knowledgeable about all the various types of encased meats that they have. They are located in Findlay Market and are surrounded by other various butchers, basically a carnivorous’ wet dream. When the sausages were grilled by the resident Cincinnati grillmaster they were juicy and delicious. The spicy sausages were as advertised and had a very great spice blend. The favorite sausage that we got from here was the andouille. The most unique was certainly the camel sausage (nicely seasoned need to watch when you cook it b/​c it will dry out fast). I highly recommend going here if you want to have an awesome BBQ. Your friends will thank you and everyone will remember the delicious sausages.
