Fairly certain this is now a Vietnamese restaurant

First hint should have been that the place was empty except for one table. We had tried the restaurant once before. Not very good German food, but we don’t have a lot of options close by. We had purchased a restaurant gift certificate for Oleg’s that clearly says«THISCERTIFICATEDOESNOTEXPIRE.» The owner(Oleg) refused to use it, said it is only good for one month after purchase.. He had the nerve to show us to the door and told us to eat at McDonalds. Would not recommend. ever.

Visited for the first time tonight. Place was spartan as you would imagine an out of the way no-frills strip mall establishment to be. Owner was pleasant and the food was definitely homemade. The menu is primarily German although could be laid out a bit better. The beer selection was appropriate but the wine list was a bit lacking. More importantly the food… So I had the Schnitzel Jaeger(breaded veal with a cream mushroom sauce) a side of spaetzle and a side of the homemade saurkraut. Kraut was really very good with some sauteed red cabbage mixed in as well as apple and cranberry. The veal was tender and had an good flavor. My buddy had the sausages which were also very good. All in all it was pretty authentic and worth the trip. Pros: Food quality, prices & Beer selection Cons: décor, wine selection To me it is 3 ½ stars but will give it a 4.

Absolutely delicious! I’ve been jonesing for a good currywurst ever since we visited Germany a year ago. For whatever reason you just cannot find it anywhere around the area. It made me so happy tonight I damn near licked the plate. The sauerkraut is perhaps the mildest kraut I’ve tried. Very tasty. The potato pancake was good, but the hot potato salad my wife ate is what I’ll order next time. The food definitely had that homemade feel. The sausages and curry sauce reminded me of Berlin street food.

Great food, very authentic German cuisine. Lunch time is good and not crowded, bring cash for a discount. Good beer selection on the menu too, mostly some of the better Eastern European items. Owner is very blunt, but not rude as some people assert. The service he provided was very good, the food came out quickly and was delicious.

I love this place. The owner/chef is a great guy and his food is AMAZING! He makes a fantastic breakfast as well as dinner. Everything is made from scratch and the portions are huge! The prices are very reasonable as well. I think he is one of the best chefs in the city! I cant recommend this place enough!

I’m not sure what it says about Cincinnati that the best(mostly) German restaurant in a town with a heavy Teutonic population is owned and operated by Ukrainians. But I guess it really isn’t that big a deal, considering that some dude named Michael White is widely acclaimed as the best Italian chef in New York City. Be that as it may, Oleg’s Tavern might be the best of a suprisingly small and not very good German lot in Cinci. Almost everything seems scratch-made and tastes like home-cooking, and prices are bend-over-backwards reasonable for the huge portions.(Think $ 12 for a large, protein-heavy plate of food.) The Hunters’ Stew is a good one, a rich tomato-ey broth with sausage and veggies, and slightly on the sweet side; it’s a little bit like Brunswick Stew. Pork shanks were very tender, and the hot german potato salad and the sauerkraut with the dried prunes are satisfying sides. Other folks at the table had nice things to say about the sausage plate, stroganoff, goulash, and Austrian meatloaf. Over on Urbanspoon, a lot of people complain about Oleg raging from behind his stove at his family and other staff members. Hey, this is part of the show, and a somewhat funny one: My wife observed him cracking a smile immediately after a couple of his(Russian or Ukrainian?) rants, the family seems to get along just fine, and Oleg’s a friendly and engaging fella when he finds the time to visit your table. And he cares that you enjoy his food. Big problem on the night we were there: Our very young waitress was absolutely clueless about how to serve our big group, and, despite her montonous and clunky approach to filling this many orders, her attitude about the whole enterprise was a bit cavalier. However, after a handful of mix-ups, everybody ended up with what they ordered, and at roughly the same time, so I guess all’s well that ends well. Still, Oleg might need to direct some more tirades at her. In any event, I suspect you will get better service if your party is smaller. Dark décor suggests some kind of weird mix between rustic hunting lodge and Central European diner. I think it suits the aims of the place. And if you go during the winter and spring months, rest assured that Oleg’s beloved hockey will be blaring on the flat-screen TV. I definitely intend to visit again.

The food here is top notch! The service leaves something to be desired! I had the Bavarian Chicken with German Potatoes which was excellent! The only downside here is the wait. You will wait to be seated. You will wait for your drink order. You will wait for your food order. You will continue to wait until you food arrives(but no drinks). Finally your drinks arrive. You get the idea. Great food, slow service.

Food was very fresh and owner was very pleasant and you can tell he loves food. The décor was a little awkward and smashed together. Overall a good value and I will be back.

This place came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Quality food made with quality ingredients(organic, local…) all from scratch. Perfect hearty comfort food to warm up a chilly fall night. I ordered the stroganoff on spatzel and sampled the goulash and meatloaf. All tasty. The owner(Oleg) was both our waiter and chef. He was extremely nice and helpful and service was fast. Excellent experience. On a side note, they no longer serve breakfast. Only negative about the place is the location. It was difficult to find and we passed it up initially. If you’re going for the first time at night make sure you note the address. The strip mall it’s located in does not have a lighted sign at the road and Oleg’s sign is blocked by a tree. At night it just looks like a dark strip mall with nothing open. Whoever owns the strip mall is really doing them a disservice by not lighting the sign out front as it’s pitch black at night.

ok first even thou there not german this place is the best german resturant in cincinnati which says something because that’s half the people in this town. And yes I’ve been to all the german resturants around town… it started as a resturant share which was awkwerd when you would show up on the wrong week and have to eat shitty food or excuses yourself politely and run for the door when the other resturant was open… that said the other one is now closed and its now just olegs… which is basicaly. A husan and his wife … they have a few servers now but it started whith just them. Olog the chef from one of the estern european country that right now escapes me makes I would say 90 percent of the food in house the potato pancakes are light and eggy with a lot of herb the sourkrat has prunes in it which makes all the differnce in the world… everything I’ve had here is beyound good. And it shows in the plateing to he loves what he dose. With that said the wife run the front of the house and she could not be more hospitable but as good as the meal always is she littlerly puts it all to shame with the most heavenly desserts you’ve ever seen. it blows anything taste wise out of the water I’ve ever had… it almost makes you want to cry… if your reading this and haven’t been go. right now

Pros: The food is delicious. Portions are maxed out! Organic, high end meats. Lena: sweet and professional. Family run business, so expect a relaxed atmosphere.(You’ll probably hear Oleg yell«ORDERUP!!!» in Russian) They’ve got a very good, but small beer selection. The menu has European favorites like schnitzel, goulash, saurkraut(really delish), HOMEMADE brats and Bavarian and Berlin Chicken. The chicken is wonderful. Check their WEB site for American favorites that are on the menu. Another pro: Real china, not cheap plates. Lena is a pastery chef and her desserts are amazing. The honey-berry tort is an homemade layered confection that is not overly sweet. Perfection. Cons: The waiter who worked there as of August 2010 provided lousy service. We got the feeling he was not part of the family. In general, the service is slow. Oleg does all of the cooking himself, without a kitchen assistant. If you understand this, you’ll have a great experience at Oleg’s Tavern. HIGHLY recommended.

I’m having a hard time coming up with a review that doesn’t sound insulting, but I really don’t mean it that way — there’s tons to like about Oleg’s Tavern: — The food is homemade. As I was reading the menu I thought to myself, «all of this can’t possibly be homemade.» But it is. And it’s very, very good. The portions are huge. Schnitzels as big as your head! — The family that runs it is absolutely adorable. Friendly and hardworking. — Did I mention that almost everything is homemade? I’m still amazed by it! They’re probably incredibly stretched for resources but… — I don’t know why they call it German. There were a lot of other dishes that I wouldn’t consider German and the owners aren’t German. Call it what it is and we’d all still love it. — The interior could really use a make over. And ventilation. — The Hungarian Goulash was paprika-y, but ummmmm… not very goulash-y. I know there are a zillion variations, but this was an outlier in all that I’ve had. It’s a good stew though and features some delicious homemade spätzle. — They prefer cash only and add a surcharge for credit card payment.

Such a wonderful place run by a very nice family. The food here is absolutely delicious. Everything has always come out piping hot and tastes so fresh. My husband has had the pork shanks twice and they fall right off the bone. They do an amazing mozzarella/tomato salad with the most decadent balsamic glaze. I’ve had the goulash which was bursting with flavor along with their Hunter’s soup. I always order fish and it’s perfectly cooked and seasoned. The beer selection is quite nice. They have several interesting imports and their wine selection is good enough. One instance we had a waiter who didn’t know much about anything and didn’t fill up water or even get water when asked. He even brought my husband another beer that he did not ask for. He was quite terrible to be honest but other than that, they do a great job taking care of you at Oleg’s. One other thing, the flat screen TV can be annoying. It’s a small place and one time we walked in and I couldn’t concentrate because all I could hear was some nice dining music(loved it) and Two and a Half Men blaring on the TV. The food makes up for this though :)

Thought the food was very good although I’ve only tried the breakfast so far. I like the atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Didn’t think the service was slow but I was there in the morning when it wasn’t super busy so I’m not sure I’m the best one to comment on the service. The goetta omelet is great. Give it a try.

So one of the two former owners of silver fork, decided to reopen with almost the same menu. Same review as silver fork, good food slow service.
