801 is the one! I’ve eaten at this place several times and never been disappointed. The service is excellent and the food is unbelievable! I ordered the 801 prime cut topped with a king crab barnaise sauce and the garlic mash potatoes. My wife had the pan fried seafood platter and my daughter had the Mac and cheese. The portions were so big that we had plenty to take home. I highly recommend 801 Chophouse!

Definitely the best steakhouse in the St. Louis area, and probably one of the best in the country. The steak is always perfectly prepared and the sides are amazing.

So disappointing. Slow service, had to send my steak back because it was undercooked and charred on the outside, and prices are way too high for what you get. Skip this one…

Sadly one of my favorite restaurants in Saint Louis and we had a less than stellar experience. The apps oysters and steak tartare were fantastic but the entrees left a lot to be desired. My son ordered the dry aged strip steak and i ordered the regular strip ala carte and for 65 and 57 dollars respectfully i expect great food. Mine was way overcooked and had to be remade, my sons was fine but nothing great. My wife ordered the halibut and it was way overcooked too and she couldn’t cut through it with a steak knife, not kidding. She didn’t eat it. Our server took away her plate without even asking if she enjoyed her meal. at the bare minimum he should ask when you return a practically uneaten meal. We brought our own wine too and spent 350 bucks for 3 people, it think that is excessive for 2 apps, 3 entrees and a couple of side dishes. We will not be rushing back

My bestie recommended this place when I asked for his favorite steakhouse in STL, and he went to undergrad here so I figured he knew what he was talking about and tried it out! The 8 oz filet was hot and cooked perfectly, but I must admit not the best filet mignon I’ve had, especially for that price. I HIGHLY recommend the blue cheese and parmesan covered potatoes, they were my favorite part of the meal! The asparagus and hashbrowns were unremarkable. Would I go back to the restaurant? Probably not. But maybe I’d sit at the bar and order some of the blue cheese covered potatoes :)

Very good steak house in Clayton. Hip, nice crowd with great food. Stopped by last night for a late night bite and it was great. Filet cooked perfectly and tasty. My wife had the burger and that was the same. Next time in this area we will be back.

I’ve been to quite a few restaurants in town, and enjoyed most. However, the 801 chophouse did rise above the rest by way of a few tangible, and yet a few intangible ways. This is why I’ve given the chophouse 5 stars. My wife and I stopped in on a whim for a late dinner and not only did the staff welcome us and go out of their way to accommodate us, but made us feel welcome and as if we were regulars. Kevin was a most excellent waiter who took the time to welcome us and help us through the unique chat broiling style steaks which is beyond the norm of the chains. The wine list was amazing, the portion sizes were huge. We split an order and walked out sated. Treat yourself to some New York style dinner and visit!

Perfect Service. Cool building. Fantastic Food. Absolutely amazing dinner. Had the Prime Rib(grilled), hash browns and creamed corn. Everything was cooked perfectly. This place cracked into my Top 5 steakhouses in the country: 1. Berns– Tampa, FL 2. Peter Lugar– Brooklyn, NY 3. 801 Chophouse– Clayton, MO 4. The Top– Columbus, OH 5. Boa– Santa Monica, CA Sorry Manny’s in Minneapolis. You got the boot to number 6. Without a doubt I would Recommend HIGHLY!

Located near the Ritz Carlton in an expensive part of town is 801 Chophouse. This is not for the feint of heart you will spend money and lots of it. For starters we ordered the deluxe shellfish platter. $ 85. This came with whole lobster, king crab legs, jumbo shrimp, and oysters. It was more than enough for 4 people. It so much that everyone having finished amended what they were going to order and the sides for the main course. I ordered the NY strip steak bone in with maytag blue cheese on top. I ordered it cooked medium and it was cooked to perfection. All the beef is rated as prime which is the highest grade available. I was somewhat underwhelmed with the steak. The flavor was not quite what I would expect for prime and the blue cheese overwhelmed the steak, my bad. I also ordered a side of grilled Brussels sprouts. This was a simple dish made complicated. It did not need the walnuts and the over the top garlic. I would have preferred the sprouts a little simpler. Mrs. K. ordered the petit filet and a massive baked potato. I must report her steak was cooked per her preference and the potato was huge. We brought home the potato untouched and a couple of bites out of the filet. Everything about this place is first class from the service to the restrooms. I mean it was so fancy it had ice cubes in the urinal. :)

I have been on the hunt for a solid steak in St. Louis for a while. I’ve tried all the normal places people suggest and in every case I’d been letting wanting. Maybe the quality of the meat was mediocre, the service was off, or the actually restaurant was tired, or in a mall and old or the sides were over cooked. There was always something. Not here. This is head and shoulders the best steak in St. Louis. The quality of the meat is fantastic. The service is excellent. The wine cellar and cocktails are unique, delicious and a joy to have. The menu is complete, leaving no one wanting. You pay for it, but this is now my go to and would tell anyone in the area to not bother with anywhere else and just go here and enjoy it.

3⁄5 for Happy Hour and 3.5÷5 for Dinner. Happy Hour: you can only take advantage of happy hour if you’re seated at the bar, so try to come on the early side and grab a seat(4−6pm). I can’t pass up a happy hour with half-price glasses of wine and $ 1 oysters. However, the oysters are hit-or-miss. Sometimes they tasted fresh but at other times they were rubbery and not very appetizing. Dinner: I would rank 801 Chophouse above Ruth’s Chris, but below Morton’s and The Tenderloin Room. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful when we were trying to decide on a steak for dinner. My friend and I split the 14 oz lobster tail, the roast prime rib au jus(801 cut, bone-in, medium), garlic mashed potatoes, and the Grand Marnier soufflé. We liked the steak and mashed potatoes, but the lobster was overcooked and kind of bland. The soufflé was good, but not as airy and memorable as the raspberry soufflé I tried at Morton’s. Overall I think our dinner experience was fine, but it was not satisfying enough for a 4 star rating.

We were heading to an event and stopped in here for drinks. We sat in the bar area and I was taking in décor and bar items. Very nice! So as the other half was looking at the food come out, we decided to look at the appetizers and have a couple with drinks. The service was nice, the crab cakes were good(he ordered two), a and Oyster Rockefeller good too. We didn’t realize once the bill came out that we spent I over $ 100, but it was well worth it. They nice guy behind D the bar was awesome! Very attentive too

Great, amazing, wonderful, and expensive. This place will definitely take a chunk out of the old wallet. But, it is totally worth it. The food, amazing. The service, great. The atmosphere, wonderful. Go if you want to have a great piece of meat, washed down by some wonderful wine, being served by astute waiters. For my last meal I had the wedge salad, the 801 Prime Rib, and the peppermint cheesecake. There were no missteps. All delivered flawlessly. If you are staying at the Ritz, this place is only a 30 second walk away.

Great steak is only part of the experience at a place like 801. To me you have to have the whole package to get a good review. Especially when the prices and reputation are what they are. Most unfortunately they missed the mark on nearly every important metric. Walking in I wasn’t greeted or at least greeted in a memorable way. I grabbed a seat at the bar and waited and waited while three to four bartenders were huddled up a few feet from me. Once they dispersed none of them seemed to think I was important enough to service. I was on the verge of implosion with hunger and it took what seemed like eons to get anyone’s attention. Once I did get service it was of ordinary quality. I got a nice glass of cabernet and a menu. It was another long wait till I was asked if I wanted to order food. Once I placed my order it was another eternity till they brought out bread. I mentioned that I was really hungry so I thought maybe they’d bring out a bread basket quickly. I was wrong. The steak arrived and while it was cooked to my med-rare specification only one side of it was any good. Tiny bits of char and fat gave it some flavor, but beyond that tasted like steak cooked in an oven. No smoke, no flavor, just meat at a particular temperature. Then it went from ok to bad when the meat got tough and gristly. The asparagus was big and cooked well, but also lacking flavor, maybe its not the right time of season for it(it is btw). The best part of the meal was the potato pancake. Oh and the wine I ordered really hit the spot. «Meh, I’ve experienced better» is exactly what I was left with and as a result 2 stars.

Last night for my birthday dinner I chose 801 Chophouse. We have been here several times before so I knew exactly what I was going to do for my dinner. Tonight, as usual, we went thinking that we would just sit at the bar and no reservations were necessary. Now I don’t know if it was because we came later, or if eating at the bar of a restaurant has caught on, but there were no seats to be had. We finally ended up sitting apart and texting each other, but only for a little while since two seats together opened up. For an appetizer, I would normally order the Bone Marrow. Three large bones with delicious marrow in the middle. Our dog loves when we bring home the bones. Tonight, however, I decided to go with the Steak Tar-Tar and Mike went with the Oysters Rockefeller. Since we both love those dishes, we decided to share. My Tar-Tar came with a dollop of spicy mustard, onions and pickles with toasties. An egg yolk on top to swirl in with the meat. It was wonderful. I was sorry I had to share. Mike loved his Oyster Rockefeller, but when I ate mine, they tasted very sweet. So much so I actually thought someone had put sugar in the salt shaker. I fell down on the main course. I was a little full so I decided on just getting the scalloped potatoes. Mike got the Rib Eye with Bone Marrow butter and a side of creamed spinach. We ended up splitting the potatoes and spinach. They were both good and were covered in bread crumbs. I mean covered. His Rib Eye was delicious and cooked to perfection, but the bone marrow butter made it very rich. The next time he will choose a different topping. It didn’t seem to deter him. We had great service from behind the bar and Blair offered a free dessert when she found out it was my birthday. I declined knowing I had a cupcake waiting at home for me. Of course I will come back here. The next time I’m ordering a steak!!!

Downtown St Louis. Great dining experience! The waiters know their meats and do a presentation and detailed explanation of all of the cuts available! The sides were also very good. Had the 16 oz ribeye but probably shoulda got the bone in filet. The ribeye was juicy and marbled but the filet looked even better. For the sides, the spinach had a citrus type flavor which was different but good, and Brussels sprouts, gnocchi, the mash potatoes all great! Probably the best part of the meal was the desserts. Ordered a crème brulet which was good but saw the apple dessert creation and decided to order that too. The desserts are are Flintstone style — ginourmous :). Overall a double thumbs up! And best of all, right across the street from my hotel so no commute!

Beyond good, My gf and I had our anniversary here. As soon as we got to our table they had hearts spread all over the table for us. Also a menu rolled up and tied with a bow that was signed by the entire staff. Everyone in the restaurant seemed to know it was our anniversary and kept saying happy anniversary, they even gave us a free dessert which was amazing. The desert plate even had«Happy Anniversary» written on it in chocolate. They even gave us A special menu with happy anniversary on it.(Photos are posted) I loved the detail to things that they did to make us feel special. These are places I look for and love to tell people about when I come across them. The drinks where great and the steak, wow the steak. We also shared a side of lobster mac & cheese which was great. We had a great time and hopefully will be coming back soon for the great seafood platter there.

Amazing experience last night dining here. We valeted for $ 4 which I would suggest, unless you want to try and find a spot. The restaurant is stunning. The atmosphere is that of an old school, high end steakhouse where the waiters wear aprons, tend to your every need, where the table is cleaned at all times and your napkin is constantly refolded for you when you get up from the table. The bathroom is even nice. Our waiter was Robert C… amazing! We ordered the New York strip-medium with chop salad, Caesar salad, lyonnaise potato, Brussels sprouts, creamed corn and lobster Mac n cheese. We absolutely loved everything with the exception of the Caesar salad and the drinks. The mixologist are what brings the rating down from 5 stars. It’s sad when you can’t make a chocolate martini or white russian. The BF ordered the buffalo trace whiskey. I can’t wait to return to try either the fillet or prime rib! A must is the 801 chop salad, substitute the herb vinaigrette for the fried garlic buttermilk, the creamed corn, Brussels sprouts, lyonnaise potato and splurge for the lobster mac-n-cheese. Order the sides in half sizes to try a variety. The experience and food are worth the price. Our bill was $ 150.16.

First time at this restaurant, so let’s start at the beginning. I called ahead with a couple of questions and and just happen to mention we were going to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. When we sit down«Happy 24th Anniversary» was printed on the top of the menu. Wow! The atmosphere was second to none! The décor is classic, elegant, and contemporary at the same time. It definitely feels like a fine dinning steakhouse. Our table was perfectly set and they even added hearts in honor of our anniversary. Our sever did an outstanding job from the presentation of meat selections to even keeping our ice tea and water filled. He was incredibly personable, which I find refreshing. My wife has some food allergies and he made sure that her order was something she could eat. Now for the food. I ordered the Tuscan Ribeye, which was 16 ounces of pure deliciousness. My side was the lobster mac and cheese and it was incredible to say the least. My wife ordered the 28 ounce prime rib. Let’s just say she will have plenty to eat tomorrow and possible the next day. In her words, the prime rib«melts in your mouth!» Her side was the grilled asparagus, which was prepared in olive oil. I’m not a fan of this vegetable and I thought it was very good. She loved it. We always try to pick a good steakhouse for anniversary as we both love steak. Since living in the St Louis area we have been to some nice restaurants, however, this is the best place we have dined in our 24 years of marriage. If I could give it more than five stars I would.

I’ve been here a couple of times and I have to say I wasn’t that impressed. My first visit here was during Clayton Restaurant week where we had the prix fixe menu, it was good, and I won’t judge it too hard based on this since I know those menus are slightly different than normal. I came here again last night and still wasn’t overly impressed. They have a great selection of steaks, seasonings, sides, and appetizers, but I didn’t think it was worth the the money honestly. I was waiting to have that mouthwatering amazing steak sensation while eating my steak, but it just wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. The service was ok, our waiter was attentive but not overly friendly. He seemed in a rush always, not sure if they were short staffed or something. Maybe my eyes weren’t shining back $$ but I’ve seen friendlier and better service at a steakhouse before.
