I do not understand the low reviews. Considering the quality, the prices are waranted. Both the coffee and the food is legit and delicious. The service is acceptable and definitely not lousy. This is my favorite cup of coffee in cda(get the bowl of soul its amazing), they make a mean mexican mocha in several ways and its definitely praise-worthy. The breakfast is also delicious. The avocado toast is amazing! Cda is very short on good coffee, pass this place up at your own risk ;)

Surly service by a couple of college aged girls who couldn’t be bothered to give any semblance of customer service. On top of that, the coffee was mediocre. If I could give — 5 stars, I would.

Love the old Java, love the new Java. Food is too expensive but it has always been that way. Coffee is great. Service. Depends on who’s working but let’s face it, Java has more employee turn over than the earth has tidal changes. Still the best cup of coffee in town.

This was my first visit to the new location, and I was genuinely disappointed. I came to enjoy some coffee and some breakfast while getting some work done on my computer. I plugged it, tried to hook up to the wifi, and the signal was so weak, I accomplished nothing. I walked up to the register to order a drip coffee and the California Benedict. After the disgruntled cashier took my order, I paid and stood there waiting for my coffee that I JUST ordered and he goes ‘uh, you don’t have to stand here and wait, I’ll bring you your food!’ I replied with, ‘I’d actually just like my coffee right now.’ He said, ‘what did you order?’ Finally I got my coffee(which was delicious, that’s why I gave the place 2 stars). My food came really fast, and it was mediocre at best. The potatoes were so greasy. The Benedict was NOT worth the $ 12+ I paid. I will not be back, very disappointed.

One of the best coffees I’ve had in the Pacific Northwest. Bold statement I know, but I’ve always been warned about the coffee up there, since I live in LA. I’ve been to both locations on my 2 visits to CdA. I’m sure I’ll be with the majority when I say that I loved the old spot right in the action corner on Sherman. But whatever, it’s all about the coffee right? I was told to go for the famed«bowl of soul». What a perfect name for a coffee! Felt like I was in an the cast of Friends when I had it. It came with a homemade whip cream which was perfectly floating on the right side of the cup. Great for infusing that sweet aftertaste after every sip. Needless to say, I was wired as hell with a great caffeine high. Wow. Staff was super friendly, smiles all around. Then again, you can’t expect anything less from the people in CdA!

Raspberry Croissants! SITREP Since I moved from Coeur d’Alene, ID(CDA) many years ago, it’s always been a treat coming back every few years to visit friends & family and to note the massive«face-lift»(aka, «New Construction») that has taken place. THESETUP Java On Sherman(JOS) is one of those amazing new coffee shops that has popped up to fill a very important social & business need in CDA, and that’s provide a very workable WiFi and munchie stop for the casual business person, as well as provide a forum for the fun meet-up. With ample space and furnishings, JOS can easily host several dozen teleconferencers and telecommuters. BEEER! Also meeting a new trend head-on, JOS has got some taps so that the visitor need not only imbibe in coffee or tea, but has some tasty choices of micro-brews and cider. [THIS…is what I love most about the«evolving» coffee shops!] P-A-T-I-O! JOS has got a large large exterior patio so that on a nice day like today, once can take their conversations and/or WiFi’ing outside and enjoy the beautiful weather on their sumptious patio. Since JOS is situated right on Sherman Avenue, there will be that white noise from the street, but it really isn’t all that bad since Sherman is more of residential thoroughfare with speed limit right at 35−40mph. PARKING! Convenient! With side lot and back lot, there is plenty of spots for the patrons. THELOWDOWN A nice chill spot to WiFi, drink coffee and eat croissants in Downtown CDA!

Delicious California Benedict! Nice tiny bite of spice! The only shame is unriped avocado. The double shot Bowl of Soul was also delicious, recommended by a friend. love the atmosphere and music, outside patio is almost perfect with the exception of some uncomfortable chairs. Staff is fun!

Ok… bicycle parking, beer, and coffee. How can you go wrong!!! Plus, huge patio to sit out in the sun on warm sunny days. The Mediterranean Bagel sandwich is my favorite go to lunch item and you can’t forget the sweet potato fries! Don’t listen to the Negative Nelly’s — me thinks they protest to much :)

Their coffee might be great. It was way back when at their old location. Certainly should have kept it simple. These are obviously not«restaurant» people. Three young lady servers who surely didn’t take a look at the salad, which was the most expensive menu item at $ 10+, before they dropped it off at our table and never returned to check on us… although we had several walk byes… the kitchen guy obviously didn’t mind serving up a salad with about 50% rotten lettuce and about $.70 worth of meat products, with less than fresh tomatoes… The Beer, however, was great, and when I finally brought the salad to the server, checking her handheld media device, she made a gross face, dumped it, and credited our card. So, that was a free beer! I don’t Unilocal much… this was that sub par. Get your act together Java. ;)

We have given Java 4 chances in the last 3 months, to try to make us believers and every visit has been horrible. By far, the staff/service is the very biggest part of the problem here; flippant, inattentive, slow and inefficient are some perfect words to describe what we have experienced each time. While the food is also lackluster, it is the horrifying«service» at this establishment that is the stand-out…I can’t see going back.

I was in for lunch yesterday with my family and was very disappointed not only in the food but in the cleanliness of the café. We had to send our sandwich back because it was completely the wrong item and there was a layer of grime all over the floor. I also don’t think anybody is vacuumed in quite a long time. We will definitely not be returning.

This place hits the mark each time. I’ve been to this place half a dozen times when i’ve visited over the past couple of years to Couer D’Alene. I always make my walk up Sherman Ave to find this spot for a casual breakfast. I didn’t realize they moved and was a bit concerned when i saw another coffee house took their prime spot on the Ave. I have to say though that they have done a great job making their new place a few blocks up cozy and a great second home. I always get a muffin which is no ordinary muffin, its basically twice as big as a normal muffin you would find at a pastry shop but the best part(the top) is the majority of the pastry. Cant go wrong with that! My wife had a full meal there and it was reasonably priced with quick service. The staff are always very nice and talkative with you. They like to converse with their customers and make them feel at home. PS. Try their homemade whip cream on your coffee!

Well, I am very sad. I used to love the old Java, we have been going there for years. We tried the new Java over the summer and had a terrible experience, awful service and bad food. Today, we decided to give it another shot, because I miss the bowl of soul. When we walked in, there were 3 people behind the counter, however they were all huddled together having a conversation, and were not happy to be interrupted by a paying customer apparently. I asked where to place our order, and the RUDE barista said«where the cash register is.» Well, I couldn’t see the cash register because it was covered in junk. The three employees kept trying to get each other to come take our order, and finally one did, the same RUDE one that pointed me in the direction of the hidden cash register, and said«I GUESS I will take your order.» We ordered the cup of potato bacon soup and a lox and bagel, and two bowls of soul. The other two finally broke away from their conversation and decided they would go ahead and make our bowls of soul, after I repeated the order several times to them. We went to our table, and waited, and waited and waited for our cup of soup, and lox. We got our lukewarm bowls of soul, but after 40 minutes I asked to check on our order since we were getting crunched for time. Turns out, the RUDE cashier never gave them our order. He was no where to be found, the kitchen guy had no idea what we ordered. He offered to «make it on the fly», to which I said we actually needed to go now. The girl working at the counter finally showed back up, I told her I wanted a refund, and she said she had no idea how to give refunds. I asked to to please find someone that knew because we had to go. She said, «sorry, no one here is authorized to give refunds.» Well, I think maybe if you have people authorized to take your order, and your money, and then forget to turn your order into the kitchen, they ought to be authorized to give refunds. She finally begrudgingly figured out how to refund my money and we left. Our lunch times was over, she we had to go back to work without having eaten. Besides the terrible service, as soon as you walk into Java, it feels dirty. The floors are nasty, the tables are so smudged, the counter was covered in junk and dirty, and the barstools like they have been chew toys for a bunch of puppies. I am disappointed that we have had 2 bad experiences, as it means we probably won’t try it again, and I had such fond memories of it before. Hopefully things change there for the better.

I’ve always enjoyed the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of Java on Sherman, and their new location only adds to the appeal with more space and an expanded menu! It’s a good place to linger as you sip your coffee, have lunch, play chess, or read your favorite novel. The staff is friendly and helpful. Tonight I finally tried Java’s signature drink, the Bowl of Soul, and it was delicious! A Mexican hot chocolate with a shot of espresso, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a thick, cold scoop of real whipped cream melting away delectably on top. I think I might have a new favorite drink! I’m really glad Java is part of the Coeur d’Alene community!

I was a little suspicious of the location change, but imagine all the goodness of Java’s drinks into amazing breakfast foods. I had the soul pancakes! Bowl of soul INTO pancakes. And the sweet potatoes are a must try!

Great service. Very good coffee. Pretty good beer selection as well. Just had a turkey bacon basil sandwich and it was perfect. Potato salad on the side. Portion size is about right. Great value for my money and nice atmosphere. Sitting outside enjoying the last few days of summer in Cda :)

Having lived in CDA for 15 years and Seattle for 4(during college), I have copious amounts of experience with coffee shops and may be qualified to review Java. PROS: New location has more seating, is less cramped and has better parking. Their staff has always seemed friendly, while still maintaining the general hipster vibe necessary for all astute coffee shops. Their signature drinks are good and they use homemade whipped cream(it is to die for). CONS: The food and signature drinks are pricey. They use Stumptown coffee beans(or coffee seeds, if you want to be accurate), which is not necessarily bad. However, using a local roaster could improve the quality of the espresso. The espresso is also not bad, but not on par with some of the shots I’ve had in the SEA area. When I went to Java last week I ordered a macchiato(not the Starbucks kind) they thanked me for knowing what that is, so +1 star for boosting my ego! Java is a must-visit if you’re in the Coeur d’Alene area. While it’s no Slate or Vivace, it is an overall good experience.

Wow… perhaps my expectations were high due to the awesomeness of the original Java. Pros: New location pretty good Staff is friendly Outside seating is nice Cons: Service is terrible(slow, messed up order, coffee served lukewarm, several staff completely incompetent) Food is way over-priced Cook with dreadlocks not wearing hairnet — gross Restaurant was dirty Didn’t even know about the seating in back Maybe they need time to iron things out, but it seems management is trying to run a restaurant with only the skills of running a coffee shop. Those are very different things.
