Amazing food and service. The food is a wait, but well worth it. Get the mole plate #9… It’s AMAZING.

Bad service here at this place, nobody comes to check at our table. We ordered 30 minutes ago and the food hasn’t showed up.

A complete disappointment. Very slow, unfriendly service. Excruciating just to get them to swap lettuce for cilantro. Took 35 minutes for food to show up. No reason given. Never checked back to see if we wanted a second beer or another salsa refill. Wow. How does this place stay open. We won’t ever come back. Take your hard-earned money elsewhere.

Family run establishment. Nicest people you have ever met. Simple flavorful Mexican dishes. Large plates for the price. Daily specials. Quite and clean.

NO fish tacos! All I wanted was fish tacos. I almost didn’t stay after I found this out, but I’m glad I did. Great food, awesome customer service, amazing margaritas! When I went looked like it was the husband & wife as the servers & their younger son was helping with waters & bringing out food. That was really cool to see. You get tons of yummy food without hurting your wallet! Defiantly a great stop!

Closes at 8 so we felt bad showing up at 7:40, but 8! Come on. The staff was still really friendly, the food was unremarkable but got the job done. Large menu and fresh tortilla chips a plus.

Atmosphere is delightful! The young man busser was very personable, and the older guy server and lady were very welcoming. The food was really good — large portions. We shared the«two burritos», and the deep fried jalapenos. Corona was $ 3.75! Such a good value.

I haven’t had a hot meal for the last 24 hours during my drive back to Portland from CA. I was passing by Coos Bay and did a quick Unilocal for a Mexican joint and found El Sombrero. Great service. Great, great salsa. My order, enchiladas, was what I expected but their service and salsa made me very happy.

We ate her by default — fish place was closed. We don’t typically trust Mexican restaurants on the coast — always been disappointed. This was no exception. Server was nice — I’ll give the place that much. The food — typical and less than mediocre slop on a plate all smearing together, lardy beans drown in cheese and sauce. Overcooked veggies — would have been much better at Baja Fresh. Beans and rice were like lumpy paste. The children wanted me to mention that their Orange Fanta was very fizzy which is how you want Orange Fanta. There, I had a kind thing to say.

During a recent trip to Coos Bay for a wedding, and a less than satisfactory experience at another local establishment, our party of seven wandered into El Sombrero on a Saturday night. The décor is pretty typical of a mexican restaurants — bright and colorful with a patio feel. We were quickly greeted by the host, and seated in the middle of the room at a large table. The specials were explained to us as we received our menus — and we quickly took advantage of the opportunity to order a round of fresh fruit mango margaritas. Plenty of chips and salsa followed — and our orders were taken by a darling waitress who is the granddaughter of the cook. The food — great salsa and thin crispy chips, fantastic margaritas — and they are not afraid to go a little heavy on the tequila. Everyone had something different for an entrée — and no one complained. For me — the chile verde burrito was spicy and delicious — not salty like you will taste in some places. The refried beans were some of the best I’ve ever had. The hubby had the large burrito — only order this if you want to take some along for lunch the next day!!! It was enormous… The food and beverages were great, the service was spectacular, and our party left happy and without a huge hole in our wallets. It had a nice, family atmosphere that made us feel like we were welcome and appreciated. I highly recommend this little gem of a restaurant on the main drag in Coos Bay!

Great find in Coos Bay! Huge portions of delicious food and awesome margaritas. The salsa is also great and just spicy enough to add a bit of a kick without making your eyes water. The prices are also great, for 2 dinners, 2 margaritas and a fish bowl grande margarita it was just over $ 30. Loved the blackberry margarita, great blend of real fruit and tequila, not watered down like most mexican restaurants. I definitely look forward to traveling through Coos Bay again just to be able to stop in at El Sombrero.

I’ve been treating myself to El Sombrero as I drive Hwy 101 for years now. The Chile Verde is unsurpassed by any in Eugene. Learn what this dish is supposed to taste like. Most places use salty canned green stuff with meat that tastes like dogfood. Not El Sombrero– their chile verde is all handmade following their grandfather’s recipe. Another treat(which I have not had for awhile) is their seafood soup; a delicious ambrosia that will make you glad to be near the ocean. I have never posted a Unilocal review before. I’m glad to be able to share my enthusiasm for this good food.

Visited El Sombrero a while back with a friend after hearing a recommendation from another friend on their vegetarian burrito. Was initially put off by the fact that it was empty on a weekend right around dinner time, but we were seated immediately so we decided to take a chance. The décor is pretty standard here, and the employees are all in fact latino– a good sign. My friend is also latino and enjoyed a chat in spanish with our server about the best dishes. We then settled in to enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa and check out the menu. Wasn’t in the mood for an actual meal so I ordered the«sombrero” — fried ice cream with banana chimichangas around it. It was freaking amazing! I have been on a mission to find a good recipe for the simply made yet delicious banana chimichangas. The deal is that the fried ice cream is standard, and by standard I mean it is what you expect and it is good. The bananas though are half bananas wrapped in almost like a wonton wrapper with yummy caramel… soooo good. My friend ordered enchiladas and was very happy with his meal, even more so with the salsa– he poured a whole bowl of it over the enchiladas he liked it so much!

My favorite Mexican restaurant. Friendly staff, and consistent service/food which is rare in this area. One of the best places to get a steak as a slab, or as partof a dish.

Driving through town we stopped here knowing nothing about this place. Normally we don’t like doing that but that was the situation we were in. This was a great find. The food was excellent! Service could have better but everything was forgotten when we tasted our food. Mmmmmmm

It’s challenging to find any acceptable ethnic food in this town, El Sombrero is not only acceptable it’s delicious and as close to authentic as I’ve seen here! The Carne asada has good flavor and was juicy and well prepared. One of My dining companions had a chile verde burrito, he proclaimed it to be excellent. My other pal had a chicken enchilada and described the meat as juicy and well spiced. Over all, we enjoyed our food. Nice atmosphere and super friendly waitstaff.

Well, I want to say something noteworthy about this place, but there really isn’t much to say! It’s about what you’d expect. The food was good, and I’m giving it four stars because it’s basic honest affordable food, and you can’t really go wrong with that.
