Disclaimer: I haven’t been here in a year or so, so things may be different now. If you go on the health inspection website for Dallas you find that Happy Wok is mysteriously not there. This place was a staple food for me in college until I looked up those scores. A few years back they had a REALLY bad score and, if I’m not mistaken, were almost shut down. This was reflected in their restaurant. You don’t experience this when you order delivery, but dining in here is a waste of time. I used to live about a block away so we walked here once to eat. The tables were sticky and the whole place was just disgustingly cluttered and dirty. Some of the other reviews say it is under new management. The food is pretty good, so it might be worth a try, but eat at your own risk.

Happy Wok? I think they may need to change their name. For checking this place out for the first time, it didn’t give me that impression. I had a good look at their menu and while doing so, I overheard the elderly Asians fussing/complaining to each other over their last call. I don’t understand Mandarin or Cantonese, but I could hear them making fun of or discussing about how the last person on the phone couldn’t understand them since they kept repeating the same English words over and over again… to the best of their ability. After bearing through their conversation I finally made up my mind and ordered a Combination Lo Mien without Shrimp and an order of the Orange Beef to-go. While waiting, I overheard the Chinese Lady giving directions to other soon to be customers on the phone. «At cross of Green bill and Love us… and love us. No, no and love us,» she says. Here I am cracking up inside, thinking she said«A Green bill and love us,» and all the while I, myself, have Asian parents who weren’t that much better at speaking English when they first started out their business. Sigh… I hope they learn to speak better English for the sake of their business. I know she meant at the intersection of Greenville and Lovers, but the people on the phone sure couldn’t understand. I noticed on their menu that Happy Wok is under new management, so I’m hoping that they’ll outgrow their growing pains and hire some more help, especially for the order taking. By the time I got home with my food, it was still hot and tasty. The lo mien was a little on the dry side, but the noodles were soft and not oily. The Orange Beef was orangey and spicy, but the batter on the beef was soggy by the time of consumption. I’m not sure if they usually make it soggy or crispy, but nevertheless, it tasted good. I think I made a good call by ordering my food when I got there. Sure, I may have had to drive there and wait about 5 mins for my food, but at least I didn’t have to go through the hassle of trying to give out my order over the phone. I hope they wok on their English.

This place is alright. Nothing special. The staff doesn’t speak English very well at all.
