What a delicious place doomed to fail. :-( Giving the Lighthouse three stars has nothing to do with the food. This place gets a five in comparison to other fish and chip restaurants. Lunch specials are only $ 4.99 with a variety of options. I ordered the fish and scallop combo, and the scallops were cooked perfectly; the breading was light and crispy, and the scallop inside was just the right texture. The fish was also soft and flaked easily. I’ve paid three times as much for a similar meal in Monterey that wasn’t nearly as good. My grandma ordered the calamari, and it was completely addicting! The breading was seasoned, and the calamari was less rubbery than what I’ve usually had in the past. My 4 year old son also ordered the fish, but preferred to stick to the fries and his Granny’s calamari. The reason I would be wary of going back is the owner/manager. The guy is really… really…off. Not quite all there. A little disturbing. When we walked in, he was pacing around the restaurant and didn’t greet us. The whole transaction of ordering our food was painfully awkward, but not worth going into detail compared to what happened later. Once our food arrived, we realized they had given my grandma a full order of calamari, rather than the combo with fries. There were plenty of fries on my plate, so we just decided to share and not mention it. The manager(or whoever he is) came up to our table, folded his arms, and just stared at us. We didn’t know what to do! Finally, he asked(in kind of an accusatory tone) «How’s the fish?» We said it was delicious, and still he kept glaring at us, so I tried saying, «um…we’re fine right now. Thanks.» Then he points to my grandma’s plate and mentions how the full plate of calamari was only supposed to be half. My grandma said, «You should go yell at your cook.» He yelled, «I did!» She offered to have him take half of it back, but then he proceeded to rant very loudly about how he’s losing money on our lunch, and that people have been ripping him off since the day he opened by sharing lunches, buying one soda for two people, etc. My poor son looked terrified, and my 82 year old grandma and I were just staring wide-eyed at each other through his tirade. He finally walked off, stared out the window for a while, paced some more, and then went back to the counter. My son finished his drink quickly, but there was no way in heck I was asking this guy for a refill, so I just poured the rest of my drink in his cup. Another family walked in and obviously thought you were supposed to sit at a table to be waited on. Instead of telling them politely to come up to the counter, the guy stood there behind the counter at them, glaring with his arms folded. It was a good ten minutes before they realized he wasn’t going to speak to them at all, and they finally walked up to the counter. Wow. So…will I be back? IF they stay in business(and that’s a huge if), most definitely… but only for take-out. I wouldn’t dare invade this weirdo’s space again.

Never had the opportunity to eat here. We walked in and noticed no one inside except for an older gentleman in the back cooking. After about 5 minutes we triggered the front door again and motioned to the man in the back. He did appear to notice us this time. After another 5 minutes he approached the counter, got on to the phone, yelled at someone about not being on time and then hung up. He then said, «What do you want?» I can understand being understaffed and a little stressed about it. But, a little sorry for situation goes a long way. I give them 6 months with this type of behavior.

The food here is DELICIOUS. My fiancé and I both got the two fish combo. Serving size is generous — and for lunch we probably should have just got one fish. The batter is not overwhelming. The fish is super tender and falls apart(and no fishy smell/taste!). We got some hush puppies on the side, and they’re probably the best hush puppies I’ve ever had ever. The décor in this place is awesome. Even the plates match the whole lighthouse, fish & chips theme. Minus a star for being a really confusing setup. Walk in and there’s a huge menu on the wall that’s empty. There’s two paper menu’s in this whole place. If they get busy I don’t understand how this will work. This place seems like it wants to be a sit down restaurant — yet you have to pay in the back where the blank menu is. The waitress(and there was only one — she must have been overwhelmed with all the people she had to help) got in trouble by the owner(I’m assuming that’s whom she is) because she had a customer get up to pay. I honestly don’t believe it was the waitresses fault. The set up is confusing and it’s up to the manager/owner to get it straight. Either have a stand up menu or a paper menu. If you have a stand up menu don’t have the customer sit first, but pay first. If you have a paper menu let the customer sit, eat, then pay. It’s not that hard. BUT it’s confusing for both the workers and the customers. When we walked in we weren’t sure what to do with the large blank menu over the register. Minus a HUGE star for the owner/manager. She was extremely unprofessional not only in demeanor but in appearance as well. The woman I’m referring to arrived not shortly after we did, talking loudly on the phone, declaring«I’m in the restaurant now — I will call you later.» She walked freely behind the register and in the back to the kitchen. She sat her father and child in a booth closest to the door, and from across the restaurant yelled at her father on what he would like to drink. He responded and then she yelled again saying she could not hear him. She would also talk loudly to them while passing our booth. She then preceded to stand next to their booth and stare at everyone as they ate with an awful expression on her face. AND I’m sorry — if I owned(or acted like I owned) the place — I would not show up looking like a complete and utter SLOB. The weirdest shirt I’ve ever seen, high water sweats, messy hair somewhat pulled into a scrunchy, and running shoes does not equal professional attire. We will be coming back since this place is really reasonable, amazing fish and chips, and the waitress was really nice and friendly. However, next time we’re back I hope they figure out how they want to present their menu and that the owner lady is not there staring me down as I eat.
