I’ve eaten at Uncle Chong’s for as long as I could remember. They used to be located on Fremont Blvd near the Fremont bank before they moved to this new location. The food here has been consistently great through the years. It’s been a tradition in my family that we’d bring guests here everytime and everyone we’ve brought here loved it so far. We usually get the Seafood combo, which is amazing. It consists of lobster, fish, clams, soup, a seafood claypot.(I usually order in Chinese so my translations are a bit iffy) Just a warning though, this combo will probably require 6 people to consume(I think it said 4 on the menu). When I come with fewer than 6 people, I usually get the Chicken Terriyaki which is absolutely delicious especially in combination with their sauce. I’ve gotten to know the family really well over the years and we’ve been frequent guests. The servers are extremely nice and my brother and I usually get free drinks. This restaurant is actually better than most restaurant’s I’ve eaten in China and Taiwan. The price is also very reasonable. I highly recommend it.

I went here today with very close friends Roger and Maggie. They treated me for my birthday and we had a very nice and quiet late lunch. The food they recommended were excellent. Steamed Rock Cod was just right, our favorite Walnut Shrimp was fresh and crispy as expected, and the pan fried noodles were yeah… crispy as expected! Birthday surpise they gave us free rice and soup. Dessert was the fried bananas and yes, they changed that drizzled it with chopped roasted peanuts. I used to go here and my family when I used to live in Fremont 10 years ago.

Uncle Chong’s is single-handedly responsible for making me like Chinese food in my adult life. However, the serving staff screwed up big time and ruined my love of this restaurant. The lemon chicken(with sauce on the side) is quite good, allowing the chicken to retain its delicious crispness. The lemon sauce is really exceptional, and I unfortunately haven’t been able to find one like it elsewhere. Coupled with vegetable fried rice, you’ve got a winning, albeit artery clogging, meal fit for an uncle or even an aunt. My problem with this place is that at my last visit, an older female server stole a dollar from me when we paid the bill, then had«Uncle Chong» come out to back her up. He did so, shouting at me form across the dining room, garnering the attention of all diners in the restaurant. «You only gave five dolla!!!» I haven’t been back since.

Sorry but Uncle Chong isn’t was it used to be anymore… I went with my boyfriend, two-year-old son, and my brother and his gf. and we got the WORSE service I’ve ever gotten here!!! Maybe because we all look young and they don’t wanna deal with us??? I’m 20 and my brother and his gf are both 18. so they probably don’t feel like dealing with young people.ANYWAYS. the servings have gotten smaller over time. but the taste is still the same so that deserves a star… but MAN. the WATER. whats up with that? When I got a refill. there was this black little things floating in my water and the waiter didn’t even say anything when I pointed out that there are things floating in my water… SOGROSS! i was so thirsty when I got home because there is no way I’m gonna drink that water! If I wrote my review five years ago. they would have gotten a much better review, but I’m so disappointed with them now. next time, I’ll just go to ASIANAGARDEN in MILPITAS! cheaper and better service. they have 3 for 15 $ deal everyday after 5pm… :)

I live 1.5 miles from Uncle Chong’s, and tried it for the first time last week. The food was delicious, and I finally found my new favorite chinese take-out restaurant. I have been searching for a good restaurant in the Union City /Fremont area, and Uncle Chong’s meets the standards. My favorite dishes already — Hot and Sour Soup, General’s chicken, Prawns with Honeyed Walnuts and Peking Beef… … typing this is making me crave it for dinner all over again! Oh, and the price is very reasonable!

I live in Newark, and have been looking for a local place with really good Chinese food. I tried Uncle Chong’s tonight based on the good reviews I saw on Unilocal.I was sooooo impressed! I called in an order on the way home from work, and when I arrived less than 15 minutes later, it was really for me to pick up! I ordered four items and it cost me $ 31.75 for a huge bag of food. Sweet & Sour Chicken. Quite good! A nice large portion of tender chicken, lightly breaded and crisp. The sauce was VERY good, tangy and flavorful. Chicken Fried Rice — Excellent! Very flavorful, large chunks of chicken and plenty of egg. I REALLY loved this — I could make a meal of this on it’s own. Mongolian Beef. Good. While this was good, it was probably my least favorite of the items I brought home. The beef was tender, flavorful and really good. But the portion was kind of small and it came with a LOT of onions and other stuff… not enough beef for my taste. Walnut Prawns. Mind blowingly AMAZING! A VERY light/thin breading on the large tender shrimp… coated in a really flavorful white sauce… and the perfect amount. They boxed it with seperate dry white noodles and seperate honey walnuts… and the shrimp. The portion was a little small… but well worth the price! OMG! I’ll be back… and soon!

I’m a fan of the food not so much the service. I was there for a reception and there were about 100+ people in our party. We pretty much took up ¾ of the restaurant. They knew of the reservation and all the food was pre ordered. So, my beef is that there seemed to only be one server for all 12 tables. Also, the dishes(although tasty) were not all brought out at the same time. Many dishes sat idle on the counter and the host of the party had to deliver them to the guests herself! Drink refills? Forget about it. On to the food. My favorite dish was probably the fried crab and the sweet and sour fish. Not the tidiest of dishes but if you are hungry, which we were, you will get down. It was my first time to try the crab. It was tasty but I still prefer steamed crab w/all the crab roe! This one was dry and salty. I also enjoyed the mushroom w/green vegetable dish(looked like bak choy). Those mushrooms were so delicious and meaty. Overall, service could have been better but I would go back again to experience this place when it is less hectic.

Have gone past the big lion statues lots of times and finally got a chance to go here recently. The first thing that struck me when I walked in was a smell which was not that good. Not sure what was causing it, hopefully that is not how it is always. The food was OK, the portions were huge. Randomly, I thought I saw Ben Kingsley at the next table! After taking a couple of sneaky looks and hearing him speak, realized that he had a close resemblance but it was not Ben. ;-)

Uncle Chong, to be fair, is not my tradition. It’s «their» tradition. And by «their», I mean my stepdad’s very extended family. They gather here to celebrate everything. And they love it. Like five star love it. And back in the day, I had no complaints. Years ago my mom and stepdad had their wedding reception here(a fond memory), the food has always been plentiful, the service quick, and I never once saw a bill. Once I moved to the city I attended these events less and less. And I started exercising more. And paying attention to the world around me. This matters for later in the Unilocal. It had been about three years, and after another Chinese New Year passed where I received money for doing absolutely nothing but staying unmarried(best tradition ever), my guilt convinced me to go for a birthday celebration. BART. East Bay. Here I come. Now, to my wonderful stepdad and his entire family, don’t take this the wrong way. This isn’t about you. I’m never, ever, ever going back. Not sure what part of the meal was my least favorite. Was it taking my seat and finding myself slightly depressed(which never happens) by the bland surroundings and soul sucking elevator music? Or could it have been being stared at by the wait staff when inquiring whether I could get something steamed? Perhaps it was watching every other dish come out with an unmistakable glistening sheen of five coats of oil that would have made BP proud. Or at the very end, when the leftovers were stuff into styrofoam packaging and placed in plastic bags? Oh no, all that is nothing compared to when I attempted to pull the shell off my steamed shrimp(apparently taking it off before cooking is not an option like it is in San Francisco. Love you SF) and THEBRAINEXPLODEDINBLOODALLOVERMYHANDS. I looked, and smelled, like I murdered somebody. Sweet. If you like obesity. If you like giving up on life. If you like destroying the environment. If you like supporting everything wrong with this overindulgent and excessive culture of food we’ve built for ourselves, and especially if you like blood, come here. Often. As for me, in one of the most appropriate one star reviews ever, I definitely think not. P. S. Family, love you, see you at the pre-party. But then I’m on the first BART back home.

My family and I have been going to Uncle Chong’s for years. I mean… YEARS. As in, going to the place before UC… «Jing Jang»(don’t remember actual English name) across from the Fremont Hub. That makes it 20+ years of Uncle Chong-related business. So, I guess you should trust this review :] It’s under different ownership, same family I believe. Cecilia is the owner(I think that’s her name, she mostly talks to my parents) and she is wonderful. This is what we have always ordered(I don’t know specific names of some… so they’ll just be descriptions): *Crab(the fried, spicy one is delish!) *Honey Walnut Prawns * Braised kind of tofu with a lot of sauce and greens * «Gan bian si ji dou» the green beans *HK style pan fried noodles *Hot & Sour soup * «Da Dou Miao» a particular vegetable that I absolutely do not know how to translate into English… but it’s very good. It’s not an upscale restaurant to bring a girl to in order to impress her… it’s where you go to satisfy that craving for some good ol’ Chinese… which seems to be much harder to come by these days.

A group of us had dinner here. The dining room was not very busy for a Tuesday night. The service was okay but it seemed like everytime we asked for something we got a look from the waiter like it was a bother. You would think with two large tables full and a slow dining room he would have wanted to hustle to get us what we wanted. We ordered a variety of dishes and all the ones I tasted were good and flavorfull and plentiful. We brought our own wine and they only charge $ 1.00 corkage fee so that was great. All in all the food is good and I would try it again.

This place still has some of the greatness from when I used to go here growing up, but it’s not the same. Maybe the food is a little greasier, or maybe the staff isn’t as friendly, I really don’t know where to gauge it. One thing that is the same is the design and furniture of the place. I swear, this place has looked the exact same for the past 15+ years. If I were to rate this place when I was a kid, 5 stars. But for now, only 4 stars.

If i could give six stars, i would! I have been going to this place for years. They know me by name, and usually know exactly what i want. If you want great food and great prices, this is definately the place to go! Best food they made… Honey Walnut Prawns! Over the years, the portions have been reduced signficantly. But this is understandable with the current economy. It just means less left-overs. which sucks. But the food quality is worth every penny!

UNCLECHONGS! YEAH! I love it! I am a huge fan of this place. My boyfriend had introduced me to this place and I’m so glad he did. Cheap chinese food and VERY good quality. Some of the dishes I usually order when coming here is the Honey Walnut Prawns, Westlake Soup, House Fried Rice, and Salt and Pepper Squid. Uncle Chongs is a great place to have a big party, such as graduation or even a birthday party. The only thing is that there is always only 1 server and sometimes aren’t very attentive. It’s okay because the food makes up for it!

I’ve driven by this place for years and after reading the reviews thought that I would give it a try. Boy was I ever so disappointed, and that’s an understatement. I order some of my «staple» Chinese foods, for comparison. There’s really no comparison. The Fried Wontons were COLD! Yes, C-O-L-D! It was gross. On the upside, they weren’t greasy, but not a good first impression. The Wor Wonton Soup was bland at best and lacking in everything else that makes it «wor.» We also ordered the Salt & Pepper Pork Chops, again a disappointment. Yes it was probably more«meaty» than some other places that I’ve tried, but it was almost tasteless. There was nothing spicy(note: it’s suppose to be spicy by the chili symbol located next to it) about it, not even mildly spicy! I wanted to try the Fried Bananas, but didn’t even bother when it came time to order it. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food, go elsewhere. This place is Americanized, and the lack of flavor in the food reflects that. In the end, TWO words: NEVERAGAIN!

I had to write an update b/c my family and I chose to eat here for Chinese new year dinner and man, the service was horrible and sloooow. I mean, you would think that they would have some sort of system in place preparing the food and getting it out to you in a timely manner due to the holiday, but no… they didn’t. Especially, since a majority of the tables ordered the set dinners. The last time we dined here, it hadn’t been for over 8yrs. I reminded my family about this restaurant and that’s how we decided to come here. I was kinda embarrassed recommending this place, based on service. The food was still pretty good, but you can tell that they didn’t season and spice some dishes up like they typically do when it’s not busy. My family was, however, impressed with the prices so I’m sure that since we’ve been reminded of this restaurant, we’ll still go, but just don’t expect stellar service when they’re busy. I don’t think they’re used to it… –Chow Mein — just your typical noodle dish, wasn’t too exciting. –Crispy Pan Fried Noodle w/gravy & everything — yummy. Love how the gravy softens the crispy noodles. –Seafood Soup — like egg drop soup, but with tiny bits of seafood inside. –Braised Tofu w/Bok Choy — the flavor was lacking in this dish. — Scallop, cuttlefish, & veggies — good, but was very fishy tasting & smelling. –Salt & Pepper Shrimp — mmmm, very good. Comes w/the shrimp head attached still. — Salt & Pepper Pork Chops — very good, highly recommended. — Crispy Chicken — good, but dry… and they forgot the sauce/dip that goes with it to add flavor. –House Special Fried Rice — delicious.

I used to come here often and order their crispy shrimp with the shell, calamari, won ton soup, Hong Kong style chow mein, and etc. Every dish was delicious and well prepared. Full of flavor! I think this is the most authentic Chinese restaurant around. The crispy shrimp dish is superb with garlic, salty, pepper and green onions. This is not the Americanized way of cooking at all. I told the owner that his food is flavorful and similar to the Southeast Asian style of flavor. He said that is not surprising, since he is from the Southern part of China bordering with Thailand. Yeah, no wonder its rocking in taste. The only thing at keeps me from going back is the unfriendliness of his wife. My husband and I have eaten there many times, but when ever she is there, she makes it known that we are not welcome. Otherwise, Raymond, the owner, is a nice host. What a shame.

It’s hard to shoehorn a place like this into a single«star» value. If you like Americanized Chinese food, it’s probably a four star place — they have all the standard dishes, the food is cooked well, and they add all the requisite grease, cornstarch, and syrup that you expect from American Chinese food. The deep fried dishes do not taste like styrofoam, and the fried rice is relatively light and edible. Service is decent. This all places it above most other generic Chinese restaurants. However, if you’re looking for good food and aren’t limited to chow mein, there are so many other good authentic Chinese places in the area it’s a shame to eat here.

I had heard mixed reviews about this place, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Maybe it was because my expectations were low, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised! The Chinese food at Uncle Chong was pretty solid. We had a banquet style meal, and they were happy to substitute some of the items on the list for us. The dishes I remembered us having: — Beef soup — Bok choy with mushroom — Salt and pepper prawns — Mandarin chicken — Spicy garlic whole fish — Orange spareribs — House special fried rice My favorite was the salt and pepper prawns! Our helpings were also very large. The rest of the food was pretty decent, which is saying a lot because there are many places that just have horrible banquet-style meals. At the same time though, none of the plates were anything to go home raving about it. In the end, I’d return to Uncle Chong with no objections if someone told me we’d be going here again, but I wouldn’t quite request the place if I were craving Chinese food either.

This is more three and a half stars, but since this place is rather expensive, I’ll keep it at 3! It’s Chinese food, duh, and it’s a bit on the more expensive side, as noted above. They’ve been here forever, which indicates that their food is good. You can get a large group together and dine banquet style, or bring a friend or two and eat family style. Nom nom nom. They have some delicious lobster here, I love it with cornstarch and egg. They serve it lots of different styles. If only I weren’t so poor, I’d eat here again and again. Their chow mein is pretty good if you’re into that. They are fast, friendly, and pretty tasty most of the time.
