Steak ‘n Shake is often a crap shoot, some are good and some are just plain terrible. This is a good location. It was clean and the food was good. If you’ve been to Steak ‘n Shake you pretty much know their menu, ton’s of different variations of hamburgers and shakes and similar items. The waitress was really good throughout the visit.

I love this place! Always have! Every time we come here the food comes out faster. No matter how busy they are. And they get really slammed with their 24-hour operation and really inexpensive food. If you’re looking for good, normal food then this is your place. And they have AWESOMESHAKES! Super great flavors and did I mention the great prices?

I went there and ordered a patty melt & cheese fries. After eating half of the melt, I was about to eat fries when I noticed a red hair. I called over waitress and pointed it out. She took my plate. When she returned my meal I noticed I had a new melt & the same fries with the same hair still attached to the fries. I WILLNEVEREATTHEREAGAIN!

This was the singlehandedly worst place I’ve ever been to. I’m not one to complain, but when you leave a restaurant after getting cussed out, have your two best friends(who are gay men) called«faggots,“and yelled at by the entire staff while you’re trying to tip and pay your bill, it is definitely the opposite of pleasant. Yesterday night my friends and I were getting dinner after a really rough night. No greeting, we were sat down at a dirty booth. That was forgiven shortly after our server had cleaned it. We all ordered separate things. My two best friends both ordered burgers and both of those burgers came back incorrectly with very old fries on the side. Mistakes do happen, so we weren’t upset at first. After 20 minutes of waiting we talked to two servers and a manager(after the slight awkwardness of being told their manager was pregnant and being asked more than once if we really wanted to talk to her,) my friends finally got a refund for their burgers. Because the staff was kind of mean to us during the process my friend became very forward and frustrated. He never said anything that was mean, just slightly confrontational. Instead of trying to ease the situation, the staff continually ignored us and kept giving us dirty looks. I was quietly trying to eat my chilli at this time. I never did say anything, and simply was trying to be as polite as possible. The situation was just escalating and building tension, so my friends promptly left and I calmly went up to pay my bill only to hear the entire staff, including the manager, in the kitchen very loudly complaining about us. I had heard someone even use the terms«faggots.» At this point, I was very offended and felt discriminated against for something that wasn’t completely our fault. I was paying my bill and even writing a tip, and just had to say something. I said, «excuse me, but that’s a little rude. It’s unprofessional to be talking to your customers that way.» As the server was sliding my card, she began yelling at me, «your whole table was rude! I’m clocked out and I’m trying to help you, so I can talk to you however I want!» I can’t explain how angry I had felt at this point. I was completely silent in this situation and I was getting yelled at while I was trying to be a good person, pay my bill, tip my server, and leave. I still kept my dignity and didn’t say anything rude back. I just said, «this is just really unprofessional and you should realize that you’re running a business,» and walked out. Not only is this unacceptable because they treated us like garbage, but they were yelling about customers in front of other customers. Very bluntly they were trying to make us feel bad after they had made mistakes. We just wanted to have dinner, but now my two best friends were called a derogatory term, which is bad enough on its own, but we didn’t even get to eat, and we were harassed. It was creating an extremely hostile environment for everyone. We never even got an apology for anything. I left in complete anger, wanting to cry. I’m in complete shock that this could even happen at a business. Needless to say, I will never ever dine at a Steak n Shake again.

We went there the other night .poor service they gave us dirty spoons for our shakes, Waitress acted like she didn’t care. the burgers were burnt they usually were good we complained we didn’t have to pay for the meal we didn’t eat. I don’t know who was cooking but it was the worst meal we ever had from there.

We ordered our meals and a shake. And I ordered a salad. Silly me, I thought that I would get my salad first. Not here, it came at the same time as my other food. Burger not done, fries cold and just a crappy looking salad. My husband was 90% done with his meal when his malt finally came. HE told the server what she could do with it and we found out she would have had to pay for it if we refused. It’s not her fault that management doesn’t find it necessary to have a fountain person on at night. Ridiculous!!! No offer of a manager to come talk with us, nothing. We paid for it all right, and left her a great tip — because it wasn’t her fault she apparently works for someone who has no idea how to work in the hospitality industry!!! Ridiculous!!! And completely uncalled for. We won’t be back.

My niece had a coupon for a free shake for her birthday so I decided to bring her to get it. We each got a shake & a chicken strip meal to split — we were kind of in between meal times so I thought I would just get a snaky type thing & she loves chicken strips — like most kids. The food was fine, basically what you would expect. We didn’t get our shakes until after we had finished the food — seems like they could have timed that a little better.

So I like Steak and Shake. They make a mean Patty melt and some good shoe string French fries. I think this location needs some better mgt though. A few of the seat cushions are split, the floor is looking old, and it needs a good deep clean. Service is nice, they have some great people there… place just needs a little love.

Burgers overdone, onion rings greasier than one would expect. My drink, a dark chocolate shake arrived at the end of the meal, with no apologies from the waitress. The shake, however, was quite delicious.

Food: The burgers are delicious and their milkshakes are great! Service: Horrendous. On both occasions I have been there, the servers acted like we were a huge inconvenience. We were forgotten about many times, water was never filled, we were never checked on. It was a slight turn-off when our checks came when the food did and you could hear the servers trash talking their tables in the beverage area. I seriously don’t know how they can get away with such awful customer service. Price: Very cheap especially with a coupon. Slightly makes up for the poor service! Our bill for an adult meal and kid’s meal came to $ 6.66. :)

UPDATE: This is how you lose a customer! You went from a 5STAR review to 1STAR for such poor service! I assume the young man at the drive through window was a manager due to his tie. First… I’m not from here. If I call it footlong chili cheese coney, there is no need to correct me that it’s ACTUALLY A STEAKDOG, NOT A CONEY! When I say, «Well, you know what I mean»… the correct answer is NOT«I think there is a signifcant difference!»… really? You are 18 working the drive through… where does this arrogance come from? Then, you asked me why I didn’t want the bun! Who cares! Don’t put it there, if I don’t want it there! Then you gave me grated cheese… why not the normal melted cheese like this restaurant does for me 4−5X a week without you! Then when I get to the window you tell me that I just ordered $ 9.00 of food, and you cannot print a receipt! You are surrounded by hotels… Men on Business… Expense Accounts… this should have been told to me at the Drive Through Speaker! When I went to talk to him about it… he shut the window in my face, in the middle of the conversation! I guess you don’t WANT or NEED my business, I believe I will Oblige you! Moved from 5STARS to 1STAR. BTW… current Unilocal Duke here… good luck to the next guy! Updated from: This is what you want a 24hour drive-thru burger joint to be! A. It’s open late!

Awesome staff at this location! I stubbed in around 2am craving a «tiny cheese burger with two pickles» — the cashier and manager working were so friendly even when I couldn’t decide what size burger to order. I know customers coming in at that hour are always a handful, so thank you for the friendly service!

Just to give a heads up, this review is coming from someone that only had a shake at this Steak N Shake, I can’t comment on the other food. But to say I was disappointed would be correct. I stopped in with my girlfriend and two of her friends from high school the day after Christmas. It was about 8pm, and not particularly busy, maybe half the tables were full. We were seated, and given menu’s and water. It didn’t take much time to decide that we all wanted shakes. Our waitress came over and took our orders. I ordered a vanilla malt. I hadn’t had one in years, and was looking forward to having one again. I don’t really like candy, but I’ve always been a fan of Whoppers(chocolate malted balls). We waited about 25 minutes to get our shakes. That is why this place is getting two stars. I can’t seem to realize why it took so long to make four shakes. And when they did arrive, my shake was just alright. I’ve had better. It was a good size, but could have used more malt flavoring. I went to another Steak n Shake in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and had a much better experience getting a plain vanilla shake.

Mmmmm I can already taste the cheesy goodness of Steak’n’Shake’s cheese fries as I write this review strictly from memory. And to think, I wasn’t going to order the fries with cheese? What was I thinking?! Me and my Californian ways. Silly girl! When in Michigan, do as the Michiganians do… Steak’n’Shake!(Please don’t hunt me down and kill me for calling you all Michiganians… it was catchy! Sue me instead!) A must order at Steak’n’Shake are the cheese fries and a shake. I guess they’re famous for their shakes… go figure. So, I ordered the single cheeseburger with cheese fries and a bananaberry shake. Although, I gave this joint 4 stars… it definitely was not for their shakes. Stop giving me that nasty look! It was my fault, I ordered a shake flavor I wouldn’t usually get otherwise. For some reason I thought that since the Bananaberry was their popular shake that I’d like it too. But I was far wrong. Honestly, I like good ol’ vanilla shakes.(I think it’s my own personal ode to Mrs. Mia Wallace’s $ 5 shake…) So, I had high expectations for the Bananaberry shake. The dead give away should’ve been the highly pigmented pink and yellow shake. The red flag in my mind told me, artificial color=artificial flavor. And I was right. It tasted like it came right out of a bottle. It did not taste all that fabulous. A side note though: my bf’s Hershey’s chocolate shake was effin’ awesome! So, there is hope out there for their shakes. I just made a poor choice. The cheeseburger was delicious. I felt a little cheated since I only got a single. I would definitely suggest getting a bigger burger for more flavor. But, I had to admit to myself, I could only handle the itty bitty burger if I were to try and tackle the shake and the fries all in one sitting. Gluttony can only go so far! So, the burgers are awesome: 1 star. The cheese fries, extra awesome with a side of awesomeness: 2 stars. And the drumroll please… the service… was also… awesome: 1 star. I was surprised how attentive and friendly service was at this restaurant. Which, I must say, is a standard in Michigan: everyone is just so cordial and friendly. So, if you’re visiting from out of town you’ll be blown away with the service here. I’m sure it’s nothing to the locals, but being that I’m from California and I’m used to horrible service… it was nice to at least be greeted with a smile and by a server who actually seemed like she was in a good mood… hahaha So, hurrah for service… a slowly dying and a nearly extinct artform…

This place would be the best after hours place if it were open after hours. Chilly cheese fry’s, Delicious burgers and any combination shake that you would like. The staff is always nice and friendly. I’m from California and we don’t have anything like this. When I come and visit I have to stop here once.

This used to be my group of friends’ hangout. This was the closest SnS to downtown and Eastown so we’d come up here all the time before the Coney Island opened. The wait staff is tremendous here, and I’ve had so many good times here. One time I got stuck with a drunk scene girl on New Year’s Eve and almost got into a fight with a drunk jock who was spraying streamers all over the place. He called my friend Lyndi a racial slur, so I had to get my tough friend and his Asian girlfriend up there to help me out. Good times.
