Love this place! We went back twice while visiting Grass Valley. It’s a no frills, down to earth location with super nice people. We tried the sausage and Han & cheese hot pasties and loved them. The ingredients are real and made with a lot of love! We went back and tried the apple pasties! They were yummy bites of hand held apple pie. What more could a girl ask for on her birthday. Highly recommend! If we lived in Grass Valley, we’d be stopping in a lot to grab one of their delicious pasties!

Nothing like a Northern Michigan Pasty, But still good far from Home! I was recently in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area of California doing the typical touristy things in the area when I had gotten quite hungry and consulted Unilocal for my next meal. To my surprise there was Pasties in CA! No way, I couldn’t believe it and just had to try them out as I’m a Michigan Native and have spent many of summers in the UP of Northern Michigan and practical grew up on pasties during my younger years. Upon walking up to the front of the business It looks to be an two story farm house style building with Marshall’s on one side and anther business on the other. The business itself on the inside is rather small making me wonder if they have more to-go orders than actual sit-in customers. I was created by Carrie at the counter and ordered 4 pasties to-go; 2 beef and 2 veggie. She offered to heat them up for the road trip for me which was nice gesture. I then asked if there had thought about shipping their pasties out nationally at all and she said that they hadn’t had the space or manpower to do it. Which was a bummer to hear to say the least, but I had just enough time to snap a few quick photos before she handed me my pasties and I was out the door. As I arrived back at my hotel I noticed that the Beef pasties were just that, beef and potatoes and the Veggie pasties were everything but the meat. In reality they are NOT true Cornish pasties and more of knock-off. As ORIGINAL Cornish pasties have beef, potatoes, onions and rutabaga or(swede) and salt and pepper in them. Its often frowned upon if carrots are used in place of rutabaga in making Cornish Pasties.
Its often a funny belief that the pastry on a good pasty should be strong enough to withstand a drop down a mine shaft without breaking, making them an all-around awesome food for the harsh and rugged mining environment. **Overall, I was satisfied with both the service and food here at Marshall’s Pasty Co. I chose Marshall’s over the other pasty business in-town due to there being better reviews here on Unilocal. However I can’t say they are as good as the Pasties from Copper Country in Northern Michigan, which does happen to ship pasties FedEx Nationally. But when your this far from home just the thought, smell and taste of a pasty will bring you back to those younger years and time spent in mining country. Cheers!

Delicious and knowing that miner’s ate these back in the day mining for gold is pretty cool.

Best in town, for sure!!! And the staff is so sweet. Be sure to get a couple dozen of the cocktail pasties for your next event, always a hit! Definitely a local spot I love to support.

I was in the mood for a day trip on a Wednesday, so decided to take a trip to Grass Valley and stop here. There is no parking immediately in front of the shop, so you will have to look around a bit for street parking. The entire shop is very small as well, so if you come with a group you will have to get it to-go or will take up the whole inside of the place. I was happy to see that there were two different savory pasties on the menu: 1. Vegetable; and 2. Broccoli and Cheese. I ordered the Broccoli and Cheese and thought it was delicious. The crust was just right and the inside filling was flavorful. They are a Cash Only business so make sure you have some when you come. And they also have a sign that they don’t have public restrooms. Some more clarification on the menu would be nice such as is if the gravy is vegetarian or not and whether any of the options are vegan or could be made vegan. I would definitely come back here again!

Stopped here to get a pastie before a concert. The owner was so nice. The pastie was delicous, I had the vegetarian. They didn’t take debit/credit cards, I didn’t have quite enough cash on me and the owner was nice enough to take what cash I had for my 1st pastie experince!

Great pasties, we had the beef and enjoyed them. Tasted fresh and the filling was savory as you expect with a pastie! Friendly staff and quick service. No restrooms, cash only. The pastie crust was very good and nicely baked.

Marshall’s is the best pastie this side of the Atlantic. I’ve been eating their pasties since I was a child and will go no where else. My favorite pasties are the turkey and the apple.

Best pasties by far in Nevada County. Traditional, filling, and a great long time local business. I love Marshalls! Two things to watch if you are not local. Don’t park in the Wells Fargo lot — they are a little over the top in policing the parking lot. Also don’t forget Marshalls is a cash only business. These wonderful ladies at Marshalls make a great variety of pasties. Enjoy!

Had the chicken pastie. Came in at the end of the day. Was put off by the lady warming up the pastie in a microwave. Couldn’t they have invested in a salamander grill/toaster oven set up. Microwaving it totally wrecked the texture and possible flakiness of the pastry. I have had better and personally made better myself.

Absolutely stellar food This place has been a personal favorite of mine for over a decade. No other pastie shop I’ve ever been to has come close to food quality and taste as marshals pasties. The ladies that run this place are very friendly and happy to accommodate. My only complaint is that this business is a cash only location.

Far from a traditional pastie. These are more like potato pies Bought a entire assortment and they all seem the same. I’ll stick to the pies I buy in the bay area.

So good! Love these pasties. The best in town. No frills, no fuss. Just good pasties. I like the beef and the broccoli/cheese. The only complaint I have is that it’s cash only. Make sure you order at least two per person. Eat up!

Had a regular beef Pastie after touring the Empire Mine. Perfect late lunch, not overly stuffing. The Pastie was good, flaky crust – a bit too salty, but delicious! A Grass Valley tradition! Now I’m ready to find some gold.

Best pasties on our Western Road Trip this Summer. The wife and I search the old & new mining towns for shops that produce these Cornish delicacies. Marshall’s are wonderful plump meat pies of which we only tasted the beef, potato and onion. They were fresh, hot, and steaming. We purchased 4 to go after consuming 2 and polished off the 4 later in the evening. The only disappointment was their smallish(6 inch) round size. The wife’s homemade pasties are at least 2 ½ times the size of Marshall’s. During our brief visit visit at the pastie shop the owner and help talked about the origin, history, geography, and construction of the meat pies. No rutabaga at Marshall’s. They do supply ketchup however. Stop by today or tomorrow and try some of these historic and rustic gems. Like the Wife and I, take out some extras. You can’t go wrong.

Marshall pasties is absolutely the best pastie place in the area. Only downfall is they take cash only. Be prepared. Really old gold rush era town filled with quaint little places to visit. I recommend grabbing a Broccoli Pastie and walking through the old town while looking at antique and gift shops. You can even wine taste outside at Smith’s down the street while you eat. They have an outside seating area as well as the inside tasting bar. There is only enough room for about 5 people inside of Marshall’s. Super small little shop pumping out large in flavor pasties. Smack my ass and call me Sally good. You will not be disappointed. If you are, come to West Roseville and punch me in the mouth.

I’ve heard of pasties but, never got around to giving them a try until I ended up in Grass Valley one day. Walked into this little shop two days before Christmas. There wasn’t anyone in their modest dining room but from the energy level of the woman at the counter I could tell they were slammed with holiday orders. She was quick to inform me of what was available hot at that moment — it was the beef and potato pastie. And I went for it. Two pasties and a soda, to-go! I would describe the pasties I purchased as braised potatoes, beef, and onion wrapped in pie crust(shaped like an empanada), and baked to warm perfection. I can’t want until I have the opportunity to visit Marshall’s Pasties again and try their other flavor combinations!

I would get Marshall’s 5 stars just for the sentimental value. It’s one of the places I try to come when visiting family in Grass Valley. The pasty is uniquely Nevada County shibboleth and I hope they stay in business forever. But I do have a couple gripes: 1. Please don’t microwave my pasty. It turns the flaky dough into sweaty dough. If you really must microwave it to warm it a bit, get a commercial convection oven like at sandwich shops to toast it for 30 seconds before serving it. 2. Monitor your inventory better. I’ve never been here without at least a couple flavor/sizes not being available.
