I bought a few jars of Sierra Nevada honey spice mustard here because my boyfriend loves it and after going through the first jar we went to open the second a few weeks later and there was mold on the lid. The expiration date was still good for a year and a half and it had been stored in my cubbard on the top shelf similar to how it’s stored at the store. I called to see if I could exchange it and I was told I couldn’t if I didn’t have the receipt. Having made the purchase a few weeks ago I no longer had it. I really like the staff here and they carry good meat so it’s unfortunate I can’t trust the quality of the rest of the food.

Great store if you don’t need to watch how much you spend. Find the meat if it’s on sale a fair deal otherwise over priced! Be aware there is other stores out there competing for you business!

Do I love the Grass Valley SPD as much as the one in Nevada City? No. But it’s still pretty fantastic. I feel like the selection of items is bigger in Grass Valley, for most of the items. I’m usually closer to the one in Nevada City, so it tends to be my go-to, but if I’m headed out of town, Grass Valley makes an ideal meeting spot and SPD is a good place to stop in for snacks, a quick meal from the prepared foods, or to stock up the cooler with drinks. I’ve never compared SPD’s prices to other stores in the area, but I’d rather shop at a family owned business that has been around for ages.

I can’t believe I have neglected to review my favorite store ever… The Deli is beautiful and I can attest to the fact that nothing coming out of that department could possibly be compared with Subway. My dog won’t even eat the deli meat from Subway. The Meat department at SPD is amazing… Everything you want and a knowledgeable staff. Everyone here exceeds expectations when it come to being helpful and friendly. Small town grocery at it’s best. The produce is always better and usually less expensive than Rayles.

Best meat dept anywhere! Manager Matthew has built a lovely display any carnivore will love. It seems they have really built up the local & organic options. They have the old fashioned meat counter vibe and its always delivered the goods when I’m searching for a specialty item or need some helpful tips. Search no more!

Went here a couple of times because I heard that the meat dept was very good. No complaints but everything else in the store was more highly priced than the other markets in town. The service was good and friendly, but nothing to write home about.

It was a huge sandwich and for a little over $ 6 you definitely get a lot of sando for you money. We had the roast beef with everything on a soft roll. But the sandwich tasted like a subway sandwich, a sadly not as good subway sandwich. It will definitely do in a pinch, but there are much better sandwiches out there.

SPD is great! They have a wonderful organic produce section for a fraction of the price you would pay at Briarpatch or Raleys…

this is the only grocery store i will go to with my dad if my mom sends us to get something. the service is really nice. we go there so offten the deli knows us by name and they are willing to stop and talk to you about lunch meat and other things. you will easly find your way around and the people are always happy to tell you where things are.

I LOVE this store. they are the friendliest people on earth. they have almost everything I want to buy. i asked them to carry organic heavy cream and they did almost 2 weeks later. some of the staff have shared recipes with me and i always feel like whomever is ringing me up is happy to be working there. Best store ever!

I like the selection of items at SPD… BUT the staff is so, weird! They stare at customers in the strangest manner. It’s as if the manager gives all the employees«happy pills» blank looks on their faces. Also it is lame when a cashier has a conversation with the customer BEHIND you while checking you out,(not like that). If I am giving you my money to buy something at least acknowledge my presence, if you can do it in a not so creepy way.

My favorite local grocery store. We come up from SF to visit relatives, and like to cook fancy meals. Their meat department is awesome — pe-ordering specific cuts make our lives easier(and our relatives’ mouths happier)!

This is the best supermarket in the local area. Their fruits and vegetables are better and cheaper than those at any of the chains. SPD has an actual butcher counter where you can select the cuts of meat you want and where you can get fresh fish, and naturally raised beef, pork, and poultry. This is a locallly grown and owned small supermarket chain. They provide excellent service and product line. Their deli counter cannot be matched. This is good, real food, not the overpriced fast food sold at Safeway, RiteAid, Raley’s, etc.

Thanks for the tip, Johnna. This one’s for you! It’s a grocery store, I know– big whoop. However, I happen to like this grocery store. First of all, I think it’s independently owned… and I like that. Secondly, their deli counter is pretty good, they always have freshly baked goods, they have real old fashioned hot dogs in natural casings(I freaking love hot dogs!), locally grown produce, locally made Fox cider(which is totally craveable), and a pretty decent butcher counter. Note: I docked a star because they are a small market so they don’t carry everything that I need. This is annoying because I grow tired of having to go to seventeen stores just to get the necessary goods.

Nice set up, not your typical IGA(Independent Grocers Assoc,) but a clean and well thought out floor plan. I especially liked their fish and meat department, the butchers were well versed in the products they had and offered tips for the beautiful red flesh trout and lamb chops I bought. The surprise of the day was finding their own line of salsas, I chose the Spicy Chipotle. Wow this is good stuff!

This local grocery store has been a favorite of mine since the day I went in search of food and didn’t want the chain store. This is the best place I know for local, friendly employees and where everyone knows who I am, well almost everyone. I love the meat/fresh fish counter with very helpful butchers ready to please. Can always find locally grown produce and a nice selection of organics. The deli is the best. They make their own flower tortilla chips. With their fresh salsa, it doesn’t get much better then that! I say, lets hear it for the local little guy, and thank you SPD for your wonderful service for so many years.

Went up to grass valley to visit relatives over the weekend and needed to get out of horrific motel(see review) so me and the fam decided to go find food. bad idea. Got lost on the 20 and by the time we found our way back most everything was closed. But there was SPD shinning like a beacon of reasonably priced food stuffs. They had a surprising selection of specialty foods and baked goods to die from! German chocolate brownies! Definitely gonna come through again next time I’m in GV.
