Great local neighborhood hangout atmosphere and service with a friendly, efficient staff! Excellent food and amazing flavor! Started with poppers and loaded potato soup followed by the Mushroom Swiss off menu of the week and the pulled pork on regular menu with sides of fries, which you get to choose the seasoning you want your fries tossed in… chose jalapeño and cumin. Everything was SPOTON!

Stopped in for a late night drink and Canada Day snack… poutine! The Moscow Liger is light and refreshing. The poutine was salty and delicious. The brow gravy is salty and had a hint of rosemary. The cheese curds were good and the fries crispy.

The fried chicken sandwich is a joke. They flattened a chicken breast as if for a chicken parm. The breading was awful and strangely sweet. Reminiscent of a TGI Fridays frozen dinner. The gravy was syrupy… It looked like soft drink syrup. The waiter is either delusional or a hustler because he about orgasmed telling me about this subpar food. Oh, the corn was actually pretty good, but this place is the worst kindof awful. The awful that thinks it’s great– coy culinary charlatans.

This was a spot that I didn’t even know existed until last night and, after my first visit, I’m already a fan! Dropped in with a larger group for dinner and were fortunate to get a table in the small dining area. They have a nice patio, but given a North Carolina summer, it was both muggy outside and threatening a torrential downpour. Freeman’s has a terrific beer list and have rotating taps, as well as always offering a cask ale. Last night it was one that was infused with bubble gum(eww), so I passed and instead had a delicious nitro chocolate stout and a bock. Didn’t have any mixed drinks at our table, but they do have a full bar as well. Prices are somewhat reasonable — the taps they had on were pretty pricey for Greensboro. One sour was $ 11 for a 16oz pour and another was $ 10. The cheapest large pour they had was $ 6, but it’s all good beer, so you at least aren’t overpaying for swill. Our server was being pulled in multiple directions, so service wasn’t terribly superb, but understandable because they were rather busy. Our table ordered the poutine starter to share. For our numbers, it wasn’t much food, but would probably have been ideal for 3 – 4 people to share. After visiting Quebec, this poutine doesn’t stand up to that, but was tasty in its own right. The fries weren’t crispy enough, so they started to mush in the gravy, which was a little too salty. The cheese curds were nice and flavorful, but there weren’t enough of them. Sort of oddly, they served the poutine with ranch on the side? Maybe Southerners just demand ranch, I’m not sure… For my meal, I selected the brisket entrée with a side of smashed red potatoes. The brisket was tender if a little fatty, but cooked brilliantly with a nice subtle smokey flavor. The BBQ sauce tasted house made and seemed more of a Lexington style to me with a muted spicy kick. All together, it worked very nicely! The smashed red potatoes were okay, but not outstanding. The winner from a side-dish seemed to be a tossup between the street corn and the brussel sprouts($ 2 surcharge). I’ll have to grab one of them next time. Other winning meals from our group were the pork chops, the banh mi and the brisket sandwich. Food prices seem very reasonable to me — I’m not sure where else in Greensboro you can get that much brisket for $ 10 with a good side. I’m looking forward to going back to try more of their menu!

We were here to have a Sunday lunch. The restaurant is small and so is the parking. Fortunately, we got a spot without having to search. The menu is small and has some twists and we wanted to check out some of these twists. We ordered the Bahn Mi with French fries, Chicken shavings(I’m guessing, don’t remember the name) sandwich with sweet corn, Vegan jerk chicken sandwich and black beans dip with tortilla chips. The Bahn Mi was ok. I couldn’t get over the extremely hard bun. I wasn’t expecting that hard bread. The chicken sandwich was better than Bahn Mi, but the bread was the same hard variety. Vegan sandwich had a twist with mango chutney, but my wife found it too sweet to be in a burger. She likes her food spicy. The fries didn’t have much seasoning. Sweet corn was good with a splash of lime juice and the black beans dip was spicy which we liked. The tortilla chips were fresh and hot which we loved. The service was great and the servers were fun to interact with.

I’ve been remiss in trying Freeman’s though I’ve wanted to since they opened a year ago. Better late than never and I can assure you I’ll be back often. The place lives up to the great reviews. In determining a review rating, I consider four things: 1) the food 2) the ambiance 3) the service and 4) my expectations. The food is excellent and is every bit as good as previous reviews say. Best Cuban sandwich I’ve ever had. The ambiance is very cool retro/bar. They did a first class job renovating this venerable space. The service was outstanding. Our server Emily made us feel right at home. The excellent service nailed the five star rating. Expectations were high going in which often leads to mild disappointment, but not here. I’m looking forward to returning to try more menu items and of course their craft cocktails. Owned by the guys that run Jake’s Billards, these guys know what their doing. Freeman’s is my new favorite sandwich spot in town.

Found this on Unilocal while watching swimming at the GAC. It’s less than a mile away! This smallish restaurant with no matching bar stools or tables and beautiful faux gas lights and exposed brick and there is an outdoor patio! Greeted by a very nice and knowledgeable staff! Menu has vegetarian and meat lovers options My portabella cheesesteak was delicious with green and red peppers and banana peppers was delicious. Accompanied by Rosemary fries! I wish I could have stayed longer to try some of there infused liquor cocktails and great imported beers. Totally worth another visit if in Greensboro !

I was in Greensboro, NC for business and stayed at the Grandover Hotel. After a long day, a few states from home, I was feeling like a bear(yup), fresh out of hibernation. GIVEMEFOOD and GIVEMEDRINK — Grrr!!! Freeman’s happily obliged and thankfully calmed my inner bear. Don’t be fooled by the unassuming, tiny, corner bar appearance. There’s off street parking in the back and a deck off the side. My kind of place. First impression was as expected from reading other Unilocal reviews. Ambiance — check. Friendly staff — check. Eclectic and creative food and drink menu — check and check. I grabbed a seat in the corner at the bar, just at the right spot to position me in front of the beer collection displayed on the wall. I ordered wine at first, go figure, and didn’t have to contemplate what to eat. The thought was on my mind the entire 15 minute ride. I ordered the vegan jerk chicken sandwich, fries and street corn vegan style. I also had the brussels sprouts as an appetizer. Yes, hungry –Grrr! Even though it took over 45 minutes for the appetizer(heard someone in the kitchen say, «Bruh, we need another person back here»), the meal and drinks were worth the wait. Downed the wine, and another and had an interesting local beer mix, which was my absolute favorite beer thus far. Wild Beer Co. Sour Blend 2015. AMAZING! 5 different sours in one… wild indeed. The knowledgeable server also let me taste 4 other beer mixes on tap. If you’re there, TRY them all… they don’t disappoint. The fries were just right for me, fried until golden with a little crisp and piping hot. The street corn left no impression but remember I had the vegan version and totally missed out on the cheesy goodness that accompanies the original steer fry. I will not make this mistake again. The Brussels sprouts were more charred than broiled but whatev… the sandwich made up for it. THEBESTVERSIONOFVEGANJERKCHICKENEH-VAH! I’d do it again to see if they recover on the Brussels, one of my favorite veggies and to try more beer. Go.

My first try here and more 3 ½ stars versus four. The space is very nice and has been remodeled beautifully. The space has been several different things and the seating area looks new. Service was excellent. Prompt and friendly. I thought the menu was unique and has some options you normally don’t find in the area. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and fries. Oddly the chicken was served cold. For the fries you get a choiceis if seasoning which is nice. I had the brisket and red skin mash potatoes. Not sure brisket is there go to dish. It was okay and better options in the area. The red skin mashed potatoes were good not great. I would go back and try it again. I think I misfired on my order. This place is worth a try.

I wanted to go here for two reasons: 1. It has good reviews and I like trying new places 2. They have poutine! I’ve been craving poutine for months on end now and couldn’t find it anywhere. And of course, I ordered it. It wasn’t as good as I had hoped, but it did the trick. The fries were not soggy, the gravy was yummy, but the cheese curds could have been more slightly melted. I split the Vegan chicken jerk sandwich with my guest and was shockingly surprised at how good it was. Sure, I could tell the difference in texture for the«chicken» and because of way it was cut up(like blocks), but that didn’t take away from flavor. It was nicely seasoned with some type of mango salsa or something similar I can’t remember. I just know it was good and I would order it again. As a side dish, we ordered the jalapeño grit cake. Good flavor though I could hardly taste the jalapeño, and maybe too much sour cream on the side. But the dish itself was beautiful and overall decent. This restaurant is really small. Parking is on the street or in the back. It was so bare I thought they were closed and called them to make sure they were open. I guess I didn’t realize how limited the space was. But don’t let that deter you. I went at peak lunch time and had no trouble finding a seat.

We tried to go last Saturday night, thinking it might not be too busy since classes weren’t back in session yet at UNCG. They were super crowded though and we left for another place. We came back on Thursday around 7 and I’m glad we did. Food was great. Above average and fresh and layers of flavor. Wasn’t a huge fan of the tap choices, woulda liked a little more variety, but that wouldn’t keep me from coming back. The soup, a curried chicken with garbanzo beans was out of this world. Poutine was just average. Had a few bites of my daughter’s veggie pasta and it was pretty tasty too. Again, all fresh veggies, nothing canned or frozen on the plate. I took one star off for the fact that we were served on paper plates. The place was full of charm and character but paper plates are pretty much inexcusable here.

It seems, in this review zone, that 9 bucks for an awesome sandwich and side is either a good or a bad deal. IMO it’s a bargain, and I will be back for more. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collards on delicious bread? What’s not to love. This place is an amazingly tasteful visual experience, and is very unlike what I’d expected. The setting is far more sophisticated than the general area around this tattoo and smokeville district. Vegetarians will be a little less thrilled as the meat theme is dominant. Just the way I like it. Cocktail lovers will really dig the bar and fancy-pants craft beers are well represented. Wine, if you must. The only TV is unobtrusive and tuned to a food channel. I find that oddly refreshing and relaxing. Take your date here and they’ll think you’re worth keeping around a little longer.

After a major strikeout night on the town where our go-to’s were either slammed or empty, we considered Plan A which included visiting Freeman’s for the first time. Boy, are we glad we did! First tip that this was our place was the fact that they were running Food Network on their one screen! Greeted right when we entered, told to sit anywhere, and never lacked anything, thanks to Emily! She was a fabulous servant and kind! Emily was kind to give us tastes of any of the taps we were considering, and that helped us make our decision, though all of them were good! Their extensive flavor profiles for their taps were really helpful. Appealed to the foodie in us. My husband asked for the sandwich with the most meat possible, and that turned out to be the Cuban. He had the fries with rosemary+garlic+shallot toss and blue cheese dip and had the Grand Cru tap in a half pour 8oz, which turned out to be PLENTY to fill! I haven’t seen my husband this happy about a sandwich and drink since we lived in California! He was thoroughly impressed and equally satisfied! My order was equally as excellent! I had the banh mi with fries in jalapeño salt + cumin toss and the tap pumpkin ale! I’m no beer expert, and get easily overwhelmed so I picked the pumpkin ale to get on with the night pairing could have been better on my part, but I enjoyed all the elements of my dish! Serving sizes are a great value! Thanks for a great dinner on a beautiful night, Freeman’s! We will be back!

This is more of a 3.5 star rating but since you are unable to give half stars I will go with a 4. Boyfriend and I decided to check this place out since we were in the area this weekend. For drinks I started off with a few samples of the beers they had on tap and decided to go with a full pour of the DuPont Bouche Brut Fermier which is a cider. I thought that beers were a bit steep for a full pour here but they are beers that I have not heard of. For entrees Boyfriend ordered the blackened shaved chicken breast sandwich with smashed red potatoes and I ordered the shallot-crusted fried chicken sandwich with street corn. Boyfriend’s was the better choice, this time he won the better entrée competition. As far as my food went according to the bartender this is the sandwich that they are known for. It is topped with whipped red potato and collars which was good but not my favorite. I did like the crunch to the chicken though. And, I was not a fan of the corn. I would definitely try another option next time. Service wasn’t great which surprised me since they were not busy. Overall, good food and the portions were generous!

Since the previous establishment closed here, I’ve been hoping for another place to catch on in this great little spot. Freeman’s makes a strong effort to be the one. They’ve got a great little selection of beers, with a cask ale on tap at all times. Their food menu is pretty limited in size but large in scope. My wife had one of the few entrée options and I chose a sandwich. But the scope… my wife had brisket and I had a banh mi sandwich. Quite different culinary traditions, right? We both really enjoyed our meal, though I think mine was probably better. The sides are pretty diverse as well and tasty.

Where to begin… Everything I have had on the menu is fantastic. The banh mi sandwich with street corn has got to be my favorite meal. The skirt steak is marinated and cooked just right and the corn has a chili aoli mixed in with it. The poutine starter is delicious just be prepared that the gravy is very salty. My second favorite sandwich the shallot crusted fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens right on the sandwich. If you still have room, the mack daddy is worth a shot but it takes a couple people to eat it.

Seriously been holding off trying this place for awhile. Every time we went by it seemed packed. Now we know why… The food was only matched by the service. Nikki and I had brisket and mashed red potatoes that were absolutely amazing and the jalapeño poppers we had for an appetizer were fresh cut and to die for. The people serving us we have seen before at Jake’s Billiards and they have brought the level of personal attention we came to know at «Old Jake’s». I think this may become one of our favorite places to go on a date night. They take reservations for larger groups. They have outdoor seating. They have beautiful aesthetics in the form of subway tile and unfinished brick walls, an open kitchen, and a really cool pulley operated fan. Prices were more than fair for the experience and even more competitive in the area of top shelf liquors than most places in the city. Will most certainly return here soon.

On our second trip, we tried 3 sandwiches, with 3 different sides, so we could more fully explore the menu, and get a better feel for Freeman’s «twist» on these rather classic sandwiches. The Pulled Pork Sandwich contained house smoked pulled pork(of course), BBQ sauce(house made I would guess), and Horseradish Slaw. The texture of the meat on this sandwich is less the stringy type you often encounter with this term, but more a coarse chop, which was very pleasant. The meat has a noticeable smokiness, which also is nice. The sandwich is a decent one, but definitely not a great one — there is a relatively small amount of pork on the sandwich, and both the BBQ sauce and the Horseradish Slaw were non-factors in the taste department — if both were increased in amount and flavor intensity, this could be a very good sandwich. At $ 9, even with a side this sandwich is rather over-priced. The Bahn Mi Sandwich was a pretty good sandwich, though falling short of the taste variety you encounter in an authentic version. The use of skirt steak was quite nice, though in this sandwich also, the amount of meat and the rest of the filling was small. As with the Pulled Pork, at $ 9 this sandwich is over-priced. The Cuban Sandwich was the most disappointing of the 3 we tried. While it was large, with plenty of chunky pork, the variety of flavors and textures you expect in this sandwich simply were not there, and what was there, was not particularly exciting. The substitution of country ham for sliced ham was not a good one, both the flavor and the texture suffered. The same is true of the chunks of mojo pork versus the slices of roast pork on the classic version. The Swiss cheese and the pickle were lost in the sandwich, as well — this was pretty much just a pork sandwich. All in all, a fail. The sides were Street Corn, Fries with cumin and jalapeño, and Green Bean Casserole. The corn was an outstanding dish, the fries were nice also, with some decent spice, but the green bean dish was not one we cared for — the beans were barely blanched, and the mushroom«sauce» was thin, watery. As on our first visit, the service was outstanding — the young lady who took our order, and checked us out, was both delightfully engaging and efficient. After 2 experiences here, we agreed that coming here for a drink from time to time might well be pleasant, and if already here, ordering something to nibble on would not be out of the question. But, this is not a place we would come to for the food, neither from a quality or value perspective — from a $ 9 sandwich one should expect both.
