Simple Kneads is OUTOFBUSINESS. See new reviews for LOAF, a bakery which opened Dec. 2011 in the same location and with some of the same staff:

This place rocks. Im always a fan of local bakeries but this one is better than most. One step in the door and you can tell this place cares about bread. I was told their«mother» came from France and they’ve kept it going for ten years. While the starter being from France doesn’t really do much for me, they have kept it going for ten years and it means they probably learned from some of the old time masters in France. Cool. As for taste. I had a plain croissant. Im a sucker for them and this one had a great texture and butter flavor. Its a light and soft croissant though. Not super crisp on the outside. Some people like em soft. It was good. The bread is fantastic though. I had the Country Loaf or Farm… I forget. Its a classic wild yeast bread with APF, whole wheat and some Rye. The crust is wholesome with a great dark brown color and the crumb is very moist, almost creamy and surprisingly sweet. Its fantastic. I almost ate a whole mini loaf by itself. If I had some butter and jam it’d be gone. If I lived here id get all my bread from here if I wasn’t baking it myself. Super friendly, and they know their stuff.

Enter through the Alley! One of the most Romantic Bakeries I have ever visited!!! — Today I had the Italian Butter Nut Cookie(made with Hazel Nuts) It was Great — Service is always Fantastic! March 2012 Update: Though this place is now closed there is a new Bakery here!

I just love this place so much. I really do. Sadly I don’t live in Greensboro anymore but when I did, I’d make it a point to come here at least once a week. Mostly Saturday mornings early just for the Parmesan Walnut Bread. It is amazing. Even more so when it’s still warm. I remember many times when the whole loaf would disappear before the end of the day. Or even most of it before I even got home. And I mean Saturday early, like 8AM because they’d sell out. It’s the only reason I’d get up that early on a Saturday. I moved to LA and now NYC… and I still haven’t found a bakery with better breads. Really. Nancy Silverton of the La Brea Bakery in LA has nothing on this place! Other great things were the curry bread. And I loved the muffins. I always held back from getting anything else. I was getting fat enough on just the bread. omg. And take the Parmesan Walnut bread that’s warm and put a little olive oil and herbs on it… or goat cheese from the goat cheese lady!!!: faints:

Lemon bar and sliced bread. Both excellent. You could easily miss this tiny space filled with delightful smells. Two little tables inside make it clear this is not a hang out place, but not bad place to sit and have some coffee. Explore the goodness here, hard to find own a wee alley off Elm. Support the local talent.

Simple Kneads is easily one of the top bakeries in Greensboro. You’ll find their breads and pastries featured in a number of local businesses, which is a good measure of a bakery’s quality. Their focaccia is delicious– when I stopped in one day to get some of it, they were playing with the recipe to try new things, and while that kind of talk might normally make me weary, I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve also had their blackbottom muffins and their ginger cookies, which are quite delicious as well. Not to be missed– it’s a great downtown business that rewards your efforts to find the alley it’s in with scrumptious goodies.

Greensboro’s pretty far from my usual stomping grounds, but my brother goes to school at UNCG, so I’m there maybe once a year. Sometime during his freshman year we were jonesing for dessert and stumbled across Simple Kneads, this tiny little bakery in gated alleyway off of Elm Street. This place is seriously tiny and easy to miss, but once you walk inside it smells so incredibly good. I’ve had their asaigo-parmesean bread(yum), grabbed a cup of coffee(acceptable brew), and sampled a few things on the counter, but the real reason I can’t drive through Greensboro without stopping here are their ginger cookies. I’m a bit of a ginger cookie afficionado, and while I’ve had better gingersnaps, I’ve never had a better soft ginger cookie than the ones at Simple Kneads. Huge and molasses-y, chewy and yielding with little bits of candied ginger, these are the real deal. I get a pack of three and promise to ration them out, and if I’m lucky there’s still half of one left by the time I get home to Atlanta. Oh, and just to be clear, this is decidedly a bakery and not a café. You get two tiny outdoor tables and(if I recall correctly) 9−5ish hours, so late night ginger cookie runs are not to be. Sorry, Greensboroites.
