I think this is my favorite sushi place on the Westbank. Your initial reaction once you sit down and are given your hot towel to clean your hands, is that this is a really calm, chill… ZEN place to eat. Their iced green die is marvelous as is their huge portion of noodle salad. Food usually comes out pretty fast so it’s a good place for lunch while at work.

Consistently good sushi and service at this westbank sushi joint. Ask Hiro for the no name roll!

This place is an oasis of really good food in the barren locale that is the West Bank. I ordered some sort of lunch combo that came with sushi, chicken, and dumplings. Everything was delicious, the portions were enormous, and the price was low. Bonuses: They bring you hot towels before your meal to clean your hands! Also, their iced tea tasted like actual iced tea, which is uncommon at Asian restaurants at this price level. Service note: I see some other reviewers say the service is hit or miss. I had no issues at all, and the place was about 75% full when I had lunch there. Highly recommended!

The boyfriend and I frequent here about a once a week or so. I like coming here for sushi and rolls when we just want a simple satisfying meal. The selection is a little more limited to most places but I like the fact that I am not overwhelmed with a million choices. Favorites: Tornado roll, crunchy roll, spicy tuna roll, and fried banana

I’ve eaten here a few times and the staff has always been nice. The beef tataki is prepared and tastes better than other places. The hamachi kama was a little small, but you can never expect the same size every time. This is just one of those sushi places you visit when you just want sushi and no ooo and aaahs about the food. The owner is fairly nice. I was lucky enough to hold a few conversations with him in the past about random jibberish.

We dined in tonight. We had already ate a little something at the house but a couple hours later it just didn’t hit the spot. We both agreed on a quick sushi run to café zen. Close to the house and moderately priced. We each had one roll and they were great. Not our normal spread but enough to fix the craving. Our waitress was super duper helpful and sweet. She was working the whole place basically by herself and doing a great job. We enjoyed. Now with our full bellies we can sleep sound :)

This is my go-to sushi restaurant on the Westbank. The staff are always friendly and I love the food. The fresh special salmon roll, the red dragon roll, and the bbq squid are my favorites. I have been going there since high school which was a few years before Katrina when they were located in a smaller location in the same strip mall. My fiancé and I get take out from them all the time. Love it!

If I’m in the mood for sushi while I’m at work Café Zen is my go to spot. We come here pretty often so I usually know what I want before I get here. Lots of specialty rolls on the menu that don’t have too much raw fish in then. Hey, I never said I was a sushi connoisseur. The prices are pretty reasonable. Four of us can usually get about five rolls to split and spend about $ 10 per person. The Hawaiian roll is a fav. I love the avocado and mango on top. You can’t go wrong with spicy tuna and a spicy crawfish roll. Two other favorites of mine are the fried lobster and oyster roll. Service is kind of hit or miss. Long wait times and waitresses or the kitchen forgetting to put in orders for certain items. But it has been better as of late.

favorite work lunch spot for us. Though there is a sushi place just across the street from our work, we drive the 10 minutes to come to zen. Prices are reasonable items are always fresh and service is speedy.

Café Zen is my absolute favorite sushi spot. When I was still living on the westbank, café zen, whether sitting in or just getting it to go, used to be a weekly routine for my boyfriend and I. The waitresses there are very sweet and always knew exactly what we would order: spring rolls, vegetable rolls, cucumber rolls and avocado rolls. Everything is always super fresh and yummy. I’ve had issues at other sushi restaurants before where my veggie rolls would have a fishy taste to them, which completely ruins it for me. However, this isn’t the case here. The only thing to watch out for, the miso soup is made with animal broth(either chicken or fish). I’m unsure if you can substitute it, but there’s so many other good things to get it wasn’t even an issue.

I love this place. I have recently moved to the west bank and this is the only place I feel like I can get good fresh sushi. The waitresses are always very friendly and you get complimentary noodle salad here. I love their mango salmon roll.

This place is amazing! First they have great service, very nice and on top of everything! The sushi is priced well and you get a lot for your money. This is my second time and it’s better than the first. You’re greeted with a free appetizer noodle salad which is to die for. I had the green tea which is by far the best I’ve had in the city. It’s thick tea and flavor is amazing! The waiter ever brought me a sweet sauce he thought would accompany my specially made roll. You can customize any roll to your liking and it only cost me .50 to add mango. Better service and prices than the so called Hana of the w bank.

Café Zen has been my favorite place to hit up when I need a sushi fix. Yes, it is located in an unassuming strip mall in Gretna, but don’t let that deter you. We all know that sometimes the BEST restaurants are the ones without all of the outside bells and whistles, and if you have great offerings, there’s nothing more that you need! Last night’s dinner was no exception to the experiences that I’ve had here. My date and I split three rolls: the rainbow roll, fresh salmon with avocado, and the shrimp tempura. Café Zen takes a lot of care in a beautiful presentation, which I find is lacking at many other Westbank sushi joints. The fish was also very fresh and not fishy at all. I also like coming here for lunch. They have great specials, my favorite being the maki combination. You choose two small rolls – I always opt for fresh salmon with avocado and the spicy tuna – along with a bowl of soup(the miso is great!) and a side salad. Next time you’re cruising down Belle Chasse Highway and feeling a yen for some sushi, be sure to give Café Zen a try! I wouldn’t steer you wrong!

I usually order to go and every time I arrive after the stated time and the food is never ready. I’m usually left waiting around for about 10 – 15 after I arrive to get my order. The best thing about the place is the service. The waitress taking my order and bagging it for me was super nice. The rice in my rolls was a little gummy. I think I must have gotten the bottom of the pot, not a big deal. I ordered the vegetable rolls and they are massive. to big really. I used my hands to pick them up and they still fell apart. I do like this place, but it’s not my favorite.

I had been here a few times in the past and I was left pretty underwhelmed. While my experience today was better, it’s still not going to be my favorite Westbank sushi stop anytime soon. My friend and I were in the mood for some pre Christmas sushi, so we stopped in here for lunch. I knew exactly what I was going to get, as I am fairly easy to please when it comes to sushi. Since the sashimi here is only served in 2 piece increments, I decided to just focus on rolls. We got two tuna rolls, a rainbow roll and a tornado roll. The tuna rolls weren’t bad and the rainbow roll was fantastic. The tornado roll was good and a nice size, and although I usually think that fried sushi is gross(doesn’t frying it kind of defeat the purpose?), I found the tornado roll interesting. It’s really big, so I didn’t feel any shame when I had to forgo my chopsticks and just pick it up with my fingers. One complaint that I have is– I ordered iced green tea, which came with ice. Every time it was refilled, she would refill it from a pitcher with no ice in it. I was left with room temperature green tea, which was just weird. Tennou is still my favorite Westbank sushi place, but Café Zen would do in a pinch.

Favorite sushi place. Forks down. The restaurant is never empty, but there is rarely a problem finding a spot. When you sit down you are greeted, given those nice warm towels, and then a small dish of cold noodle salad(the Japanese equivalent of a Mexican restaurant’s chips and salsa I suppose). This small sampling prepares you for the amazing-ness which is to follow… I can’t name all of the things I have had here, but I have not been disappointed yet. Every. Roll. Is. Delicious. Go ahead and pick one. Any one. Trust me.(Tip: Ask for a Hana sauce to dip your rolls in. It’s not my thing but my family and friends adore it.) The location is a little odd. Unless you know where this place is you may have to do some recon. It’s off of Belle Chasse Highway, but not close enough to the highway for it to be noticeable(which is probably why there is always a table available). It’s in a strip mall type arrangement next to a Winn-Dixie. If you’ve never been, the Winn-Dixie is the easiest thing to see. For those of you on the Eastbank, I suggest trying this place out. I have recently moved to Metairie but I have not encountered a better sushi joint than Café Zen. In fact, the Café Zen cravings are beginning right about now…

Wow… good stuff! This review is based on take out only. I have not been to the place myself. I have only had my co-worker get it to go and bring it to work for us a few times. They have really good lunch specials. We like to get the Maki Combination plate. For just under $ 10.00 with tax you pick two rolls and it comes with a side salad and clear soup. The quality of the rolls was excellent. I am very particular and these were good. It was all very filling. I could not finish all of my rolls. I look forward to having this for lunch again soon!

Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical of a suburban strip mall sushi bar. Café Zen was a pleasant surprise. From the moment we walked through the door, the staff made us feel like family. The vibe was relaxed, casual and comfortable. The food was pretty tasty, too. I opted for a hot saki to take the chill off, a cup of miso soup, which was one of the best I’ve tried, and the zen tempura roll. The roll was very good, but thicker than most rolls, making it a challenge to eat, but good enough, that you’ll find a way. My date went with a glass of Cabernet from their very limited wine selection, salad with ginger dressing, which she loved, and the teriyaki chicken, which was a little bland. Bottom line, worth a visit if you find yourself in the area needing a sushi fix.

For a long while I was skeptical about this place. No apparent reasons why. Just didn’t think it would be anything. I was wrong. Café Zen is a solid sushi restaurant in the Westbank. It offers good rolls with fair pricing! To name a few rolls I like: –No Name Roll –Hana Special Roll –Zen Tempura Roll –Sashimi Roll –Yellowtail Roll Their bake seafood is a great starter. Especially paired with their complimentary noodle salad! The baked seafood comes over rice and I usually ask them to replace the rice with extra mushrooms! Makes it almost as good as the baked scallops from Mikimotos!
