Once again, I decided to give Sun Splash another try. I still feel the same way I did the last time I visited them. I’ve been there enough times to come to the conclusion that their food is so mediocre to say the least. Now I know how Jamaican food is SUPPOSED to taste being that my parents & my family are Jamaican and Sun Splash food taste like the American version of Jamaican food. Next time if I want this kind of food, I’ll ask my mom or I’ll just go to Dunns River, Jerk Pit, Scott’s Bakery, Golden Krust, etc.

Made my first visit to Sun Splash today. It’s small –an ordering counter with showcase, one table and counter seating for 3 or 4. The young lady I dealt with was a delight– smiling, chatty, super friendly; shoooting the breeze at me while we watched the news together. I’m always perplexed at so many reviews of Jamaican places that mention rude/unfriendly folks behind the counter. I’ve never found that to be true. It sure wasn’t true at Sun Splash. I’ve never had oxtail, and after seeing a few raves about Sun Splash’s version, I decided to try it tonight. I had a medium plate with rice and peas and vegetables for $ 11. Let me start with the rice, because their rice and peas was terrific — one of the best versions I’ve ever had. It was tender and moist, just perfectly sauced. Once in a while you find the rice and peas a little dried out, but not here. I was equally impressed with the vegetables, so often treated like a throwaway on the plate. This was great– very nicely spiced and delicious. Having satisfied my curiousity about oxtail, I doubt I’ll ever try it again. It’s a bony and gristy cut that wasn’t very appealing to me. When I finally got to the meat, it was OK, but not really worth all the effort. I’ll go with jerk pork or shrimp next time. All in all, I liked Sun Splash. It’s easy to get to and there was a ton of parking tonight. The wall menus were easy to read, there is a lot of variety, the service was fine, and I enjoyed a lot of my dinner. I’ll skip the oxtail next time. ,

Never purchased food, love the night life though. After hours sweet, love my Jamaican people. Very cultural atmosphere…

This is the place to go for a quick, delicious, and authentic Jamaican meal. Pretty much everything on the menu is great, I haven’t eaten anything here I wouldn’t recommend. My absolute favorite though is their classic beef patty on coco bread. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. The only downside I’d say is there is barely any room to sit, and there is no customer bathroom, so I wouldn’t plan on eating there; It’s more of a get in, get out kind of place. If you’re in the mood for more of a sit down meal, they do have a full service restaurant on Franklin that is worth checking out. I’m definitely looking forward to my next trip to Hartford, I’ll certainly be stopping in here!

Excellent food, excellent people… well worth the price which is just about what other Jamaican restaurants charge. Oxtail is FIRE! the negative reviews on here are wrong, you gotta try their food and you be the judge!

Awesome food. I love Jamaican food. However, their oxtail was on a whole other level. The way it was spiced was absolutely fantastic. I went with all veggies and the cabbage was really nice, fresh and semi crispy just like it. The beef patty was spicy and was very complimented by the coco bread. Unfortunately, the coco bread didn’t have good enough consistency to pull apart well to get the beef patty in between. Apart from that, it was a great experience for the food.

This is good food, but really just a couple clicks above Jamaican take out. I was a bit unhappy with the service– the folks were nice, it just took awhile. I went there in the evening, I probably had expectations that were too high. I heard some good things about their food. I did enjoy my meal, and a Red Stripe.

Located on Maple Ave, this place isn’t anything to worry about if you’re concerned about being in an OK neighborhood. It’s in a busy portion of the South End for goodness sake! Minimal parking on their lot, you can always park on the street. There isn’t much to the inside besides a fridge for drinks and a bar of which maybe 2 people can comfortably sit at. On nice days, there are two tables outside. Their beef patties are typical(tastes better if you have it warmed and inside the coco bread, something I learned from a friend) I usually have the Jerk Pork which is amazing! Has a nice kick to it, and the pork is always very tender and moist. The fried plantains are always a nice treat, not very greasy. The rice and peas can be dry at times, but easily fixed with some«extra sauce». Their medium/large portions are HUGE so be prepared to eat, or save some for later. I have always had a pleasant experience with the ladies working, lunch or dinner. Not bad if you want a quick taste of island cuisine!

Decent Food for a good price — Large portions Since this place is within walking distance I used to take out from Sun Splash all the time. The food is good, Patties, Oxtail, Curried goat — All that Like everyone else says, the rice and peas can be a little dry at times, just ask for extra sauce — The ladies working the food counter can be edgy but it isn’t anything to fuss about.

The food is mediocre at best. I’ve eaten there 3 times already and each time I wished I’d gone elsewhere. I’ve tried the Jerk chicken and Jerk pork, the oxtail, curry chicken, and chicken soup… they were all blahhhh. Their portion size is good and don’t get me wrong by no means am I implying that the food taste bad. But there are just so many better places for Caribbean food like Scott’s, The Jerk Pit, or Dunn’s River. Now those places have real authentic tasting island cuisine.

Horrible customer service, mediocre food and also pricy. Cashier treats customer as if the customer was bothering her and she didn’t want to be there. The place is tiny so you can’t come with a few friends, sit down and eat. Rice was undercooked. Better options around with better service.

Love the fried whiting an fried chicken. I come here at least 2x a week for lunch. I didn’t give it a 5 because the rice and peas are a bit dry. But overall I love their food.

New little Jamaican spot on Maple Avenue. The south end finally has some Jamaican food! I dropped by more or less to be nosey. Its really cramped but clean. Customer service is per usual at a Jamaican restaurant in Hartford. It all depends on the mood of the cashier that day. I could care less as long as the food was good. The fried chicken was moist and crispy, the coco bread and beef patties were also fresh and tasted like they were just out of the oven. I will definitely be back to check out some of the rest of the items on the menu.
