Waffle House

[for some reason this review has been languishing in my drafts for 3+ years]
it’s a Waffle House.
you know what you’re getting yourself into… lord knows i did the 9 or 10 times i had the pleasure of eating here.
and that’s a whole lot of perfect.
bonus points to the state of kentucky where time has stood still and people are still smoking while eating their bacon and eggs.
friendly team, sweet sweet Waffle House taters and paper thin crispy bacon.

Either you love Waffle House or you don’t so I’ll focus on the service and cleanliness of this location. When I walked in 3 employees said hi and offered a friendly smile. As soon as I sat down, a waitress was at my table within 1 minute and was very pleasant. She had my drink out in about 5 minutes (I ordered tea and they were brewing a new batch). My order came out in less than 10 minutes and was just fine. The restaurant is well kept and other than a few stray small pieces of paper on the floor, it’s very clean.

I was surprised by this visit. This was our second time going to this location. One waitress brought her child to work and another waitress commented on that fact. The child being brought to work did not bother me, the rude comments did. She made the comment when the child started crying stating that «this is the reason there should not be any children born». This comment was made in front of children. Truck stops have a better class of people there. One employee asked another about a complaint call that came into the business. A customer was unhappy with the service. The floors were dirty from not being swept, instead of talking bad about people try cleaning up around the place. Put your energy to good use, I can only imagine what the other customers felt.

Having not grown up around the Waffle House chain, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was told it was something I must try.
The good: Breakfast is served all day. One side is the breakfast menu, the other is a lunch/​dinner menu. My pecan waffle was FILLED with pecans. I was surprised just how many pecans there were. Flavor of the waffle was on the light side. It was about the thickness of an Eggo waffle. The children’s waffle is the same size of the adult.
The bad: Not very welcoming to new comers. Regulars were greeted with welcoming shouts, and employees tripping over each other to help them. The way we were treated wouldn’t have been as noticeable if they hadn’t fawned over each regular who walked in. Fresh eggs were above the cook top with a sign that said they were to be used between 8am-​12pm. We arrived shortly after 12pm & they were still pulling eggs from the bin. They contued to pull eggs from there our whole visit. Not sure if the sign wasn’t changed or if the were using eggs that had been out for over 4 hours, above a hot cook top. Either way didn’t fill me with confidence. I tried a bite of my daughter’s hash browns, and they tasted like hamburger grease.
The best part of our visit was the company.

Visited here for breakfast the last day of my most recent visit to Hebron.
Ordered the sausage gravy and biscuits — but substituted the Jalapeño-​Cheddar biscuits in place of the regular biscuits — plus an omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, jalapeños, onions, and cheese. And coffee and water.
The sausage gravy and biscuits came out first. Added a good amount of black pepper and Tabasco sauce to the gravy. Dish was actually really good.
The omelette was another story. It was well-​executed from a structural perspective — the ingredients, however, were another story. I was not aware that they add Milk to the omelettes. I’m on a low carb diet and milk is off limits. The mushrooms were canned mushrooms, the jalapeños were out of a jar, and the consistency of the cheese leads me to think it was some sort of processed cheese product — such as Cheez Wiz.
Coffee was decent.
Service was good. Folks were very nice.

The waitstaff was nice, but the restaurant felt dingy & dirty. The floor desperately needed to be swept and mopped and flies kept bothering us. The manager opened the a/​c vent to investigate some problem and that was pretty gross. It was yellow and needed to be scrubbed. The food was fine, but it was hard to get over the grungy atmosphere.

This is the second time I’ve been at this location. First time the food and service was great. I came today, I know they’re busy with it being Memorial Day… but damn takes them 10 plus minutes to take my order. Probably go back to my favorite spot in Florence! Florence does a great job even when it’s busy. This one is closer to where I live.
