«You don’t sew with a fork, so I see no reason to eat with knitting needles.» — Miss Piggy, on Chinese food Call me crazy, but I do actually prefer eating with chopsticks! I just feel so much more dexterous when I eat with them. That said, the food from Leung’s is best eaten any way, just as long as it gets to your mouth. This place is a favorite among locals for good Chinese food. Offering great eats straight from their steam table or by order. Any time I go here, I know that I’m going to eat well. All of their food from the steam table is pretty darn fresh, considering that they’re almost constantly having to refill it due to the amount of customers that they get. They also always load up my plate with very generous portions, which I think is a huge plus in their favor. I mean, there’s nothing worse than a place that’ll charge you an arm and a leg for a rinky dink little amount of food. Either way, that’s not something to be concerned about here. I’ve never really dined in at Leung’s, and I think it is supposed to be a primarily take-out place, but they do have a pretty decently sized dining area in the restaurant. Some of my favorite things to get here are their sweet and sour spare ribs and beef and broccoli. With those, ya can’t go wrong. I also make a point of getting some good ol’ fried rice with all my combination plates. All in all, Leung’s is just a really solid local spot to get great Chinese food. I always like eating here, so I do feel inclined to recommend it to anyone else who is looking for some tasty Chinese food here in Hilo.

The cake house noodles are very yummy, I had the beef and broccoli cake noodles. The lemon chicken was delicious too, the chicken came crispy but the sauce was a bit too sweet. The prices are reasonable too!

Was recommended to come to this place for their lemon chicken, «How do they get so much lemon in that chicken» said my friend, a Hilo boy. While the lemon chicken was indeed good, it was the roast pork that literally stole the show. So much so, that after finishing our meals there, the 3 of us ordered a box of roast pork to go. Perfectly spiced, crispy — delicious skin. Very unassuming looking place, right off the Highway. We lucked out and got there the day before they closed for 2 weeks, will definitely stop by again on my next trip to Hilo.

I think this place is one of the best Chinese food in Hilo. It’s a very casual place, not somewhere you’d go on a date, but when I want some good Chinese food, this is where I go. Portions are small for meat entrees, like oyster chicken and beef broccoli, so if doing family style, keep that in mind. However for starches, like cake noodles and fried rice, portions are large. I have had better Chinese food, but in HILO this place is go to.

I used to like Leung’s but have not eaten there in years. I ordered take out last week and WEALLGOTSICK! I’m never eating there again! I just called and told them and they didn’t seem concerned ATALL! «No one else complained» was their response. I would give it ZERO stars if possible!!!

When we got there it was packed, no seats in the house. As we waited to order seats opened up and we were able to get one hour our family of four but needed to wait for it to be cleaned. I ordered a three choice plate. Half fried rice and noodles, both of which lacked taste. Sweet sour pork, more like sweet sour pineapple and radish, there was two pieces of meet amongst all these pineapples n radishes! One of the pieces of meet I spit out because it tasted so bad and the other that I have to my husband to try! Second entry was lemon chicken which was hard, very tough, and the sauce was horrible. I’ve eaten lemon chicken sauce made from the packets from the grocery store that tastes better than there’s. And finally egg fuyoung which was the best thing I had tonight! I’ll never be back!

There’s a pretty good selection of Chinese food. Steam table is pretty full and taken care of. Ordering off the menu is great also. Their food is salty to me, like seriously. It’s not for the faint of heart. The parking is pretty tight and small, can be rough at times. 3 stars for heavily salted food and tight parking. Go ahead and try it…

Use to fly Hilo many of times just to eat Leungs and I enjoyed it. This time around I don’t know what happen but the food was lacking didn’t have one dish that I enjoyed. You could tell some of the food was on the line for hours how often do they rotate dishes? VERYDISAPPOINTING !!!

Craving Chinese food and this place popped into my mind. I don’t remember the last time I came here so thought I’d give it a go since I’ve been seeing some good reviews. This place always seems to be packed. It’s a small joint and really stuffy inside esp. If your just there for take out which we did. My boyfriend and I both ordered a two choice plate each. We both had half & half(half fried rice & half noodles) he got the prawns and lemon chicken. The lemon chicken I thought was yummy, but the sauce could be better. His plate had about 5 prawns that looked good, but he said tasted mushy and ended up throwing all of them away. I had the pork tofu and beef with zucchini and other veggies. I liked the pork tofu and the beef zucchini was alright. This place I rate a 2 because it is deff. A quantity over quality. They give big portions, but you end up wasting it because it doesn’t taste that good.

I learned about Leung’s through my in-laws. We enjoyed many good meals there in the 1980’s. Recently I returned and found the same good food, though it appears a new generation was in charge. I hope to go again.

Oyster sauce chicken cake noodle… WOW! It’s a small family restaurant with really good local Chinese food. They have a menu you can order from and they also have take out(a la Panda Express/Chopsticks Express). We really enjoyed our meal here.

If I could give this place ZERO stars, I would. I came on on Friday at around 10:20AM with a friend to reserve a duck for pick up at 6:45PM later in the day to bring to a potluck. I’m not sure who I spoke with, but she seemed to be the person in charge and told me that she would reserve one for us at that time. I asked her again if she was sure she would save/have one at that time for us. She said yes, yes, it will be here for you at 6:45PM. She then went on and asked me for my name and phone number. I asked confirmed with her that the duck will available and reserved for 6:45PM and asked if I should pay. She said, «yes, it will be ready and you can pay when you pick up at 6:45PM.» Said thanks and left. As I was getting ready to go pick up the duck that evening, I get a phone call at 6:30PM saying, «We ran out of duck. No more duck.» I’m glad that they remembered to call, but I don’t appreciate that they didn’t keep their word AND waited that late to let me know. The person who called was very rude as well. I will not be coming here again and definitely will not be recommending this place to anyone.

I’ve been going to leungs since I was a child. Still love their food. This is the only place I will eat chinese. Leungs, and canton kitchen. Whenever someone asks where is the best chinese place in Hilo, I say leungs! I always get half rice half noodles, an order of shrimp canton, and beef broccoli. Their eggrolls and charsui are also good. Now I want leungs, lol.

The restaurant is old and tattered so I expected to food to make up for ambience however, it did not. I ordered the seafood combination cake noodle. The sauce was bland. I tasted as if they watered down the shoyu sugar and added a cornstarch /water thickening agent. The service lacked and she looked like she rolled outta bed with a bun on top of her head that looked like a tied up guinea pig. They need to step their game up and stop taking short cuts.

The food here is decent for what you pay for. Never did this place fail me. Eat in or take out, the food is still good. The roast duck and spare ribs are my favorites. Although the spareribs are manini pieces, its ono with the daikon and pineapples added in. When I order a three choice, the spareribs go right on the steamed rice. Another thing this place has is their fresh mini gin dui. You’ll have to wait a while for it but its worth the wait. You might want to wait for it to cool down a bit before you bite into it. The parking lot is small. The same way you pull in is the same way you reverse out unless there’s room to turn around which is a lot more safer.

Let’s put it this way: Leung’s is doing it right! Huge portions for cheap prices. The food is so delicious and nostalgic. The flavors are what you can expect from Hawaii’s take on chop suey cuisine. Order the«3-choice plate» and you’ll be glad you did. There are so many mouth-watering and appetizing choices to select from. You get a choice of fried noodles or fried rice to start then your choices. I got the choi sum, orange chicken, and char siu. Don’t bother with the orange chicken though… Too much breading and chicken was dry, tough, and over-cooked. It was a bad choice. The home made char siu Manapua is my favorite in Hilo so far. I tried a piece of the lup cheong(Chinese sausage) which was expensive for one small piece. It was too greasy and oily, served at room temperature. Would not try that again. The rice cake for desert was freaking awesome for not having eaten it in over 4 years! Overall, the quality of the food, the portions(enough for two grown men to share one 3 choice plate), the price, and service will get my repeat visits!

This place is a local dive, that seems to thrive off of customers with feelings of old nostalgia, perhaps as old looking as their pre-prepared food behind the front counter. The place seems very dirty and reminiscent of the filthy Chinese restaurants I use to see in China Town in San Francisco back in the 1960’s and 70’s. Be prepared to be ignored as well, if they don’t know you, they don’t want to know you. They don’t seem to believe that everyone’s money is just as «green» as the next guy. Poor business model and practice I’d say. It looks like this place took a «Left Turn» into a dead end street and got stuck in the mud back in 1969. By the way, their parking lot is horrid, angled spots on both sides coming in, which then upon leaving, require you to back out of the entire lot from where you came in at. Appears to be no way out other than where you came in from.

I love this place. I have since I was a kid. I honestly wait every year when I go home to come to Leung’s to eat the lemon chicken = my favorite! I like the selection of food they have here and the portion to price is always good. The cake noodles are ONPOINT! Just writing this review has made me wish my annual trip came sooner.
