Had dinner here twice and the food was great. It seems like they’re still trying to figure out brunch but I’ll give it one more try before forming an opinion.

Based on a first visit, i see very few flaws with W.E.S. I cruised by the place on my jog, and ducked inside… a little disappointed by the décor — i was hoping for more rustic or stone — but it looks like many of the other bars in town. But there’s plenty of seating for dinner, and they have a cool private-ish room for 10 or more people in the shape of a cask, it’s pretty cool looking. But i was here primarily for the food and football game. They had an $ 8 special — Ribs/Wings platter. Sounds pretty basic. But wow — it packs a great punch. The Ribs were fall off the bone, tender as can be… really delicious. The wings were clearly homemade and fresh — delicious tangy sauce and great blue cheese. Tender, juicy, delicious. Could have used a little more crisp, but overall, really good. Then i got sucked into trying one of their burgers — i went for the Tuna burger. Incredible aioli dressing, perfect bun, delicious sandwich. Could not have asked for a more perfect tuna burger. Beers were $ 3, not too bad for a Red Hook. They also have Anchor Steam on tap, which is rare. Bottom line — high quality ingredients, great execution, delicious-sounding menu. I’m coming back to try those mini lobster rolls.

A welcome addition to the Hoboken West Side, my fingers are crossed that this place will really make it. The template is there and I think that Hoboken is ready for some serious food this far west but, for now, there’s some work to be done. First, the space itself, is pretty good. It’s large and inviting with a big bar in the middle and a few flat screens. The alcove containing the private table is interesting. What I’m not a fan of is the fact that the front door kind of opens up right into the middle of the dining room — kind of like how some people have a front door that swings right open to their living room. This is probably going to be problem when winter really rolls in. The beer selection is good with a few unique selections. The menu is varied with a combination of sports bar, wannabe-high-end stuff and comfort food… it definitely looked good. The execution, however, was mediocre. A pork chop was a bit overcooked and the sides were forgettable. The friend chicken(described to me as «out of this world») was juicy, but the crust sort of fell off every time I touched it and was in desperate need of salt. Their chipotle wings were good, but there are better to be had in this wing-ful town. All in all, it’s better than your average sport bar, but still needs a bit of work. My hopes are high for a 4-star future review…

Went on a Friday night with friends. It was okay, but I wouldn’t venture this far off of Washington street just to go to this place. Aesthetically, it reminded me of a restaurant in a strip mall, with a little bit of old fashioned Pizza Hut vibe thrown in for good measure. I can’t put my finger on it, exactly, but something was missing. Maybe it just felt a little contrived and soulless because it’s new. Like a good pair of jeans, maybe it will get better with a little wear-and-tear. Barstools were uncomfortable, and the tables were too big to deal with the sound level inside(i.e., if the atmosphere is going to be loud, use smaller tables so people can hear one another). Frankly, I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be primarily a bar with food, or a restaurant with a bar. Regarding the food, we ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees. Some items were really good(black bean and chorizo dip was excellent), others could have been better. For three appetizers, five entrees, and one or two drinks per person, we got out for $ 150(including tip).

Stopped in for brunch this Sunday and really liked the potential. Certainly not the most convenient location to most Hoboken residents, but I guess building up the neighborhood is the Bin 14/Anthony David’s team’s stated goal. The place is laid out nicely with good TV placement, so should be a decent bar scene. That said, the stools they chose for the bar area are definitely more for aesthetics than comfort. Also, definitely still some«just opened» kinks to be worked out in terms of service and organization(water? coffee? check?). Good brunch menu, very thorough«make your own bloody» bar with lots of different selections and ideas, even considering I pride myself on my personal bloody blend. The pancakes were good(but they give you the little cheesy syrup cups; definitely needed more half way through) with blueberry topping(was hoping for fresh). The eggs benedict got good reviews as well, and everything I saw come out looked good. Posted daily specials looked enticing, and the lunch/dinner menu had some appetizing choices as well. Good luck, West End, I’ll have to try the other meals soon.
