I wish I could give this five stars because the idea is great: conveyor belt sushi that travels past your table inviting you to try different items, love it. I went the first time and it was great. The second time, I got real bad food poisoning about an hour after. I had read some reviews and knew others had the same experience, so I chalked it up to my hypersensitivity and decided to try it again. My fiancé loves it and hasn’t had any problems, so we came in for lunch yesterday. Bad choice. I’ve been in horrible pain since then and that was the first and only thing I ate yesterday because I got so sick. I had the poke and spicy tuna bowl,(which came out at the very end of the meal, irritating) a California roll, and two others I can’t recall the name for. Bummer. I won’t be back, it’s not worth it.

Came here to eat today and was expecting it to be great. Other than the server greeting us and seating us everything else was pretty shitty. I ordered a keiki bowl and while sitting there for about 15 minutes didn’t get it. Also it took forever to get a person to get us water or tea. Another server who just started her shift asked me if I needed anything. I told her I never got my keiki bowl. She told me that my server left for the day and she was so sorry for the inconvenience. The 1 star I have is for the server being apologetic. After our meal the so called supervisors never even acknowledged us or said sorry for the inconvenience. This place needs better management. Never eating at this genki sushi location!!!

I’m sad to see all the negative reviews on Genki! Every time I go there, the service is friendly. I do wish they came back to our table more often to ask if we want anything that is not on the belt. Even if it’s always busy, we’re usually seated in a short amount of time. I love their sushi, especially their spam musubi sushi & volcano roll! It’s one of my faves in Kona.

I’ve been to the local genki establishment a few times I am a regular of at least once a week or once every other week. And yet every time I’ve been utterly disappointed. Either they do not have things in stock or not enough staff to keep up with demands. I order my food every time I go there because I don’t like my food to be breathed on by multiple people but when they pull it off the belt to fill my order that is not satisfactory. that is downright laziness. I’ve had multiple nights like tonight when I place an order and is not properly filled.

Service is improving. Came in today, young lady Misty took our order and our food started coming out within 5 minutes. We had an issue with an over cooked udon and she was very quick to take care of us. Hopefully it keeps improving this way.

My experience was good. Staffs was very friendly and helpful. We should definitely have one in HILO though.

From when they first opened they have improved but not enough. Still not as fresh sushi and customer service needs to be tweaked.

Even the mascot is unhappy! I don’t like to write bad reviews but this is a must. We ate here last night and are lucky to not have food poisoning today. The soft shell crab roll should not be available to buy if it is rotten. Some sushi rolls and shellfish went around on the belt for the whole hour we sat at the restaurant and I watched them turn brown and dry out while we were eating, yuck. The poor employees look miserable. At least our young server did his best to be polite. Some of the food and beverage coolers are blinking errors on the temperature control gauges as well. Gross and downright unsafe when you are serving raw seafood!

I haven’t eaten here but will say that I was washing my hands in the restroom tonight, and an employee of theirs came out of the stalk and walked right out without even looking in the direction of the sinks.

The sushi is good but the service is TERRIBLE! We ordered our kids their own food and it didn’t come until almost an hour later. Our server was so rude and looked like she didn’t want to be there.

Genki Sushi is located in the Kona Commons Shopping Center. They are open from 10:30 am to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 am to 10 pm Friday and Saturday. Take out is available just in case you want to eat in the comfort of your own home or if you’re bringing it to the beach. For a person who absolutely love Sushi, Genki Sushi is a stop that we go to every once in a great while when we’re in Kona. I remember being there when it first opened and being amazed of having plates of sushi on a conveyor belt. It was cool at the time, haha. From when it first opened until now, to me it seemed the quality of food is okay. Can it be better? Of course it can, there is some tweaking room, no doubt. Obviously it’s not top-notch stuff but it is good for what they represent. Service hasn’t been their forte with my experience. They lack in that department. Could it be that my server was having a bad day, maybe. But still that’s no excuse for good customer service. The food is good. The Garlic Chicken this time was not overcooked but they put way too much sauce. Other sushi items like the Dragon Roll and Dynamite Rolls in my opinion are over-sauced, almost as if they’re swimming in it. Come on don’t do that! A sauce is there to enhance the product not drown it! The Ika Kaarage is one of my favorite items, as well as the Ebi Tempura Roll, California Roll and California Tempura Roll just to name a few. The cool factor and the experience is there fo’ sure! Places like Genki Sushi is a rare commodity especially on the Big Island. With not so great customer service and over sauced sushi items, I figured 3 stars is adequate and that’s with some wiggle room.

Our family visiting Kona every year since 5 years ago. My kids loves sushi and they like the ideas of the moving sushi dishes. We always go back for 2 – 3 times per visits. Their food getting worse every year. Services had no smile and not friendly at all. Sashimi not fresh and the Ahi poke bowl was sour. There are limited selection on the sushi belt. You have to order from the server. For sure, we will not go back again.

Pros: kabocha tempura and garlic chicken is soooooo good. Best in town. Nice long booth tables. Con: long wait time. Expensive. Not sure how they pass the department of health exam. The place is warm. We were there for good hour and saw the same sushi keep circulating on the belt. Raw fish sat on the counter to be prepped for at least one hour(was there when I arrived, still there when I left). I wouldn’t be surprised if I get food poisoned. I usually order raw items off the menu but sometimes I see the sushi chef grab the item off the belt and gave me the item I ordered. I ordered off the menu thinking it’d be fresh. Saw a little girl leaning over the sushi on the belt blowing her kid-infected breath on it. Grossed me out that the parents didn’t say anything. I would return just for the kabocha and the garlic chicken !!

It is very disappointing. I had a craving for sushi and my wife wanted somen salad and this was the only place to get it. Why in the hell do they put mayonnaise on everything? I lived in Japan for 16 years and never saw sushi with mayonnaise on it. The service is so bad once you get one of the waitresses they’re very nice. And why the hell can I not have a beer while having sushi it’s unnatural!!! They used to serve beer here. The waitress said they’re going to put one in Hilo too. Maybe they should improve this one first.

Bleh, I made the mistake of actuality sitting down in this establishment. As I sat watching the sushi being made and the rice machine amused me a little. I ate as little as possible. The teriyaki chicken, not sure that was actually chicken. The tuna looked like mush, no idea how long most of the plates had been on the conveyor. My son polished off the rest of the meal, I don’t carry an iron stomach anymore. I took a probiotic pill just in case.

FOODPOISONING… I finally understand why the Genki mascot looks like he does… I always wonder how people don’t get food poisoning here… There food handling is very poor, I have come in and seen large amounts of uncovered raw fish sitting on the counter waiting to be processed, I will be there an hour and when I leave the fish is still there. I have seen things get handed back an fourth over the bar between the sushi chef and the wait staff and cashier. There are always gnats buzzing around and the staff turns over faster that the pages on the calendar. So yesterday I went there and finished off with a bowl of miso soup because lunch left me feeling a little ill, so I thought to settle my stomach. The soup was more watery and flavorless than usual and not very hot, I wish I sent it back. Within a couple of hours I was pissing out of my ass and feeling like absolute crap. By ten PM it was coming out of both ends and I wanted to DIE!!! So if anyone else got sick yesterday please feel free to contact me.

Always great service and fresh food even when their busy! When we’re in Kona we always make it a point to stop in, knowing we’ll always be satisfied!!! My favorite is the stuffed mushrooms among many others there! Ivan Y.

I don’t like writing bad reviews. Because believe me, I absolutely love Genki Sushi but this particular location has disappointed me tremendously… Especially in the past year. My kids enjoy Genki Sushi as much as I do but lately the staff has been extremely unprofessional and inattentive. The food was okay… Definitely not as good as it was when they first opened. It’s almost like it has gotten worse each year. The last time I came here was over 2 months ago and until they improve things, I may never come here again. My kids waited over 10 minutes for water, and was never offered refills the entire meal. I waited and had to raise my hand desperately for a server to check on us so I could order… At least 3 different times. My 18mo old’s meal I had ordered never came. I waited 15 minutes just for my check and again at the front just to pay it. And might I add, their AC wasn’t working so it was so hot and there was gnats flying around all the food on the belt. I would’ve have loved to leave but this was my daughter’s birthday and it was her choice for her dinner…(Makes me even more upset because she too wasn’t happy with the food… And she’s 8!) I told the cashier how unhappy I was but it wasn’t her fault. I could tell she felt bad and she apologized on behalf of the company. I gave her a generous tip for her kindness.

This place need to be shut down. The service was is terrible. Every single employee need to be fired. I have been to many Genki Sushi in Oahu and in Washington State and I had excellent service and quality sushi. Here everything is so bad. From the minute I walk in I wanted to leave. They get my order incorrect twice. They are an embarrassment to the company. I want my refund!

So unfortunate to have to write this one. I am a pretty neutral fan of genki sushi at other locations but this one was disappointing. Mostly due to the extremely poor service. I must say that there were a few staff members that were okay(they were preparing sushi). We stopped by and there was an extremely long line. You would think it was busy, but there were 4 open booths and a whole 5 – 7 counter seats available. I stood in line to check in. I was 3rd in a line of 5 groups. The hostess took the first two names and then walked away. It took a while to get seated then we ordered a total of 3 things. They forgot one had to be reminded twice. Once is okay but really? I must say that there were two guys prepping sushi that were working hard. Props to them. But one guy just looked like he was cruising along as if no one could see him taking his sweet time. I will be skipping this place in the future.
