I lived just east of Lake Charles while growing up and experienced the city’s many transformations and its ability to continually reinvent itself has always amazed me. The people of southwest Louisiana are some of the most resilient people you’ll ever come across. They are energetic, live people, and are engaged in keeping their traditions alive and continue to live by the same principles and convictions they’ve past down for generations. Their work ethic is just as strong as their love for good food and music it’s a culture that few outside the area can understand. On any given day you’ll find gumbo, jambalaya, po-boys or crawfish étouffée being served up in many of the area restaurants and just stop into just about any store and find fresh boudin, cracklings, and hog head cheese ready to eat and the sounds of cajun and zydeco music playing in the back room. The area’s abundance of wildlife has always had a major economic impact providing a perfect environment for tourism and the seafood industry along with the chemical and petroleum sectors, it’s a formula that continues to work. The introduction of casino gambling has also provided a boost to the tourist industry attracting people from neighboring states. The communities’s rich culture and strong family values makes this area one of the more friendly places to visit and a place where they aren’t afraid to say hello to strangers and help someone in need.

The city of Lake Charles doesn’t have a whole lot to offer in regards to night life and active/healthy living but it offers something most states can’t…multiple casinos and a fisherman’s paradise. Lake Charles is definitely growing, adding a new casino(I believe it’s gonna be the golden nugget) and a few new restaurant and shopping choices. As for casinos Lauberge du lac is newer and nicer than the Isle of capri. As for fishing, frogging and boating you can literally do that anywhere in the city… there is water everywhere and tons of docks. One of my favorite things about the city is the drive thru crawfish stands. Pretty much any one you go to is gonna be good and spicy. I also recommend Tony’s pizza. It’s a staple of LC. It’s been there since before I was born.
