I really miss this place. It is consistently great. The Surf & Turf is my favorite sandwich. Paired with that jalapeño mayo, that sandwich is certainly one of the best things I’ve eaten… anywhere. I really wish there was a location in Houston. When I drive in from Houston, as soon as I see the sign, my salivary glands just go nuts thinking about it.

It’s extremely busy every day because it’s extremely good. Anyone that rates this place less than 4 stars is out of their mind. Expect a wait during peak hours but the sandwich is well worth the wait.

I love these sandwiches. Best poboys I’ve ever had. But could y’all replace the nasty cloth chairs? They really are disgusting to sit on.

The food is good but the wait sucks. It gets pretty busy during lunch time so you want to get there early or else you’ll get your food in like 30 – 40 mins later. But once you do get your food it’s pretty good. A little too much sauce so it gets kind of messy. Their large sub can feed two people.

Only poor boys & chips. Family friendly & great food. The atmosphere is great for all ages. We like the drinks and surprise with the decent prices. All in all. A very good outing after losing two games in baseball

4.75 stars. So one of the best parts of this experience is just going to the bar and watching the locals just talk a bunch of shit to one another and the bartender in the friendliest way imaginable. That’s the kind of rapport I like to see when I’m at a bar. Just be sure to keep your politically correct monitor at home because wow, there was no holding back to the rancor early in the afternoon. But even if you aren’t here for the awesome bar(which deserves 5 stars in its own right with garish deer head looking down upon you from every angle and a nice assortment of local brews), you should be here for the incredible po-boys. In fact, I took two of them back to Houston and they still were among the best I have ever eaten two hours later. I’d love to tell you all about the roast beef po-boy, but a friend of mine took a bite into it and I swear two minutes later he had inhaled the whole damn sandwich. I would have been mad but then I tried my shrimp po-boy and kind of went through the exact same exercise. The bread is really soft with slight sugary tones, the jalapeño mayo is awesome, and the shrimp is a great meat to carry all the flavors to your mouth. I feel sometimes you want a traditional po-boy in the style of Old Tyme in Lafayette, LA and sometimes you just want something unabashedly messy and wild. Darrell’s is pleasurable in the latter sense. Lake Charles has two great po boy shops with Buffi’s and Darrell’s. Both are worth your time, but if I had to be forced to make a choice, I’d probably tell you to hit up Darrell’s. This is a regional destination of the first order and a must stop anytime you find yourself in Lake Charles.

By far the best Po Boy place I have ever been to! If it is your first time try the Darrell’s special. Let it be your introduction to the place. Get it with jalapeño mayo. It’s not too spicy. It’s just right. Also try the local beers on tap. They have a good selection and the staff will help you pick one you will like. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I was treated like a regular and an old friend. The locals were also really friendly and were willing to tell me about other places to try in the Lake Charles area. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with Darrell’s. From the food to the friendly wait staff and the over experience. Before I leave town I am coming her once more!

We stopped by this place on our way out of Lake Charles. It was super busy at lunch time but we received our meals in a timely manner. This is probably one of the best sandwiches I have ever had! The bread was to die for and the jalapeño mayo is so good, I almost asked for some to take home. I regret not doing so, but we will definitely make this a regular stop on our trips to the casinos from Houston!

OMG!!! Lemme say by saying that they have the best poboy sandwich I’ve ever had in Louisiana. A lot of my friends in New Orleans are always asking me where is the best poboy place to eat and I always reply DARRELL’S in Lake Charles you have to drive but it’s totally worth it lol. My favorites are the Darrell’s special and the Shrimp poboy, my goodness the shrimp are buttery and the bread has the perfect texture and by the way the prices are reasonable so that’s a plus. The service is always friendly and they’re always busy on the weekends so be prepared to wait a little bit. I’m so happy that I’m married to a man who’s from here and we always go here to have beers and eat some delicious poboy sandwich and have a good time when we visit the his family.

Stopped in for a quick lunch on the way to New Orleans due to a recommendation from a friend. The po boys were fantastic. I was a little worried initially when I pulled up due to it being a sports bar and me having a child with me, but it was more like a restaurant and the waiter was very kid friendly. My son hasn’t stopped talking about how wonderful his po boy was. This will now be our go to place to stop for lunch. Delicious !!!

Great place to eat! If your poboys not wet, it’s not worth eating, and these guys are succulent! I got the surf and turf with jalapeño mayo on the side(I’m a wuss with spicy) and the 6in small really hit the spot! This is a real local place! The bartenders know everyone. If they didn’t know you, they’ll make sure to meet you!(shoutout: thanks for making me feel at home Mr. Ryan!) real friendly people, and great food! Absolutely worth going to again! Also a fun sports bar, if you’re not there just to mingle with locals!

They best triple meat poboy in the city. I haven’t tried the other flavors as you just can’t pass up the meat, cheese, auju and jalapeño mayo combo. A half size should fill you up. If you’re super hungry, pregnant or want another half for later — go for the large. They don’t refrigerate well though because of the auju. The only downside is, it takes awhile to make and it’s hard to get through on the phone if you’re trying to call in for pick up. However, they do have a drive through so there’s that.

Been here a few times and it has always been on a road trip to NOLA. Easy on and off from the 210. The food is good, although service can be hit or miss. The bread is fresh and the po boys are awesome! Table service can be slow, so I would suggest sitting at the bar if you want fast service. I’ve always wanted to go here for an LSU game, and I suppose that is on my bucket list. Its crowded, run down and perfect for a place to chill out — so why the 4 stars? Those Po Boys!!! Hire some people who actually care and this place would easily be a 5 star place. Stop here on your way to NOLA, or even to perhaps catch an LSU game.

Ever since we found this place on the way home from New Orleans a few years back I have made an effort to hit them up whenever I am close. The opportunity arose again yesterday and I took full advantage. I’m not trying to tell you how to eat but let me share how I choose to experience the Darrell’s special. It comes dressed with roast beef, turkey, ham, American and provolone cheese. They also add gravy but I get that on the side. That way I can pour a little on the sandwich for each bite. I dump my jalapeño chips in the basket as soon as the sandwich arrives. This way all the drippings including the gravy and jalapeño mayonnaise fall on to the chips and create what can only be described as the best chip dip ever. I left a very, very happy guy. They tend to get busy during lunch so get there early. If you are solo as I was there is usually a spot to post up at the bar and you can enjoy an ice cold beer with your beautifully messy po boy. Can’t wait to get back again. Thanks Darrell’s. Much love.

Made a lunch pit stop here on the way to New Orleans. I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. The moment I stepped in, the atmosphere was laid back, but I have to admit I was a bit confused about how to go about ordering. Of course, confusion is pretty easy to come by when it takes over 10 minutes for any of the staff to acknowledge you, and another five minutes to take your drink order. Why is that difficult?! The food was pretty good, I ordered the shrimp sandwich. I see why everyone is raving about the bread, it’s delicious! Crispy texture on the outside, with just the right amount of chewy goodness on the inside of the bread. The shrimp is a bit spicy, but nothing unbearable by any means. My only complaint is that about a third of the shrimp in my sandwich wasn’t de-veined. Ew! And why the lack of consistency? What’s that about? Overall, the food was good, but nothing I feel a burning need to have again. Especially if the wait to simply be acknowledged is anything like it was the last time.

When my friend from NOLA recommended Darrell’s poboy, I knew it must be seriously good. Verdict? It was! Located at at 210’s Ryan Street exit, Darrell’s is a restaurant with a heavy resemblance of a sports bar. I was a bit surprised by the bar scene but after seeing a few families walking in, I didn’t feel as weird as I did before when I just wanted poboy. The staff there was also a bit surprised to see a kid walking in with his work place on(I was really hungry after work), but they are super friendly and made sure I was taken care of. The poboy selection is concise, but I was too focused on getting the shrimp poboy that I didn’t look at anything else. When I received my footlong shrimp poboy($ 10.95), I was not expecting shrimps that aren’t fried unlike conventional poboy. Although I was initially disappointed by that, a bite into it convinced me that this is indeed a extraordinarily delicious poboy! The jalapeño mayo definitely takes the cake so it certainly made this poboy a flavorful experience that made it stand out from the other poboys I had. I would definitely return for another poboy or even a drink during a football game. Even if you are on a rush, you can pick up your poboy at a drive-thru window, so stop by here for perhaps one of the best and unique poboys you will ever have! — tl;dr version: 1) Bar restaurant that is strangely family friendly 2) Top of the world poboy especially with jalapeño mayo 3) Drive thru option available

As others have mentioned, Darrell’s is hard to beat when it comes to poboys. The bread is delicious and we all know that is one of(if not most) key parts to a great poboy! The Darrell’s special is definitely my favorite — with the perfect combination of fresh meats(ham, turkey and roast beef) and three cheeses. I love the jalapeño mayo and gravy — it all comes together as something very special. The shrimp poboy is also excellent! My only downside is that they tend to go overboard with the condiments. There has to be a good balance when packing on that much into a sandwich and it tends to be extremely messy. However some people like it that way and it may work for them. I tend to have to request light gravy and sauces and jalapeño mayo on the side. Also note that it is a bar like atmosphere, so casual is the way to go. Keep up the good work Darrell’s. Ps. When I visited tonight, they advised they are no longer accepting the free drink offer.

Service. No tourists. And a mean shrimp poboy. Friendly bar keep recommended the shrimp poboy. Super fresh bread smothered in jalapeño mayo and two slices of cheese and buttery steamed shrimp with lettuce and a pickle. Get ya one. Skip the crowds.

Darrell’s Special all the way with jalapeño mayo is the reason this place exist sometimes it is all about the food even with it’s very limited menu this place survives by selling hundreds of Po Boys daily. Please don’t come here expecting anything but great sandwiches the atmosphere seems to be sports bar like but they struggle for a real identity, no sports bar would be closed on Sunday especially ones with wall to wall flat screen TVs. The best food I’ve eaten from here was picked up at the drive thru and eaten offsite, at lunch it’s crowded, noisy and there’s always someone waiting on your seat. It’s real simple a Po Boy, a bag of chips and a drink if that’s your expectation you will be very happy.
