We still love you, Kanpai! You may not be sparkly and new like the competitor, but you have fresh fish and weren’t crowded on our latest visit to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. Service was quick and friendly. Ono was ONO! We wish you continued success.

Visit Kanpai if you are interested in great sushi for a great value. The same staff has been serving us for nearly 8 years. Amy, Kathy, August and Dario do a great job. We did take time off for a while(18mo) and recently revisited to hear, «we have missed you, would you like the usual D6 Sushi & Sashimi platter and a Teriyaki Salmon box?» The take out business may do more than in store.

Kanpai sushi prepares very typical Japanese food. You can depend on this restaurant to give you decent deals on the most typical dishes — Teriyaki Chicken/Salmon/Beef, Sesame Chicken, Tempura — the works. You cannot and should not depend on Kanpai for fresh sashimi prepared with the most critical Japanese details. That is the fish is not so fresh. But Kanpai can definitely satiate your craving for Japanese food within the small parameters of Ladera Ranch. The menu is pretty tightly kept, and if I were you, to ensure the optimal experience, I would limit my orders to their bento boxes or cooked rolls. Overall their food isn’t really all that fresh. I love that they offer brown rice for the health conscious community. I wouldn’t recommend Kanpai for the diners looking for an authentic Japanese experience. I would more so recommend Kanpai for the cost conscious diner looking for a quick Japanese bite.

My boyfriend and I love the sushi here. He and I have been coming to Kan Pai sushi together for almost three years(he maybe three years prior to that). The service is consistently welcoming and I love the sushi here. I have traveled recently to Denver CO, Atlanta GA, and Westchester, CA and there is no comparison. I am so glad to be back in California to enjoy my favorite sushi spot. Note: Be mindful of the hours they close for a few hours to prepare for dinner and if you have your tastebuds ready to go you can be led to disappointment. Enjoy yourself and relax. Allow the gentleman to WOW you, and get stuffed.

Whenever I visit my sister, Kanpai sushi is just around the block. They provide service with a smile and delicious food. Today, I had the opportunity to try the Tuna Titaki. It was prepared with pickled onions and black pepper. It reminded me of my moms Vietnamese cooking. I’ve never had sushi like that before, but I loved it. Come by their restaurant if you’re in the area!

Was slightly disappointed, really wanted sushi and knew this place was close had a crunch roll was disappointed with the crunch they use on them just throws on top of it and the tempura shrimp inside it was cold, which slightly ruined it, and $ 8.95 for a basic roll like really wasn’t very impressed…

My husband went to pick up our take out and waited 20 minutes after calling 20 minutes earlier. When we got home the food tasted awful California rolls were filled with mayo I had to spit it out! The soybeans had no flavor and over all the food had a odor just awful! I want my money back!

We haven’t been here in a while and I know why. The quality of food and service is very very ordinary. We usually go to sushi spots in Dana Point and CDM, but wanted to go back to our hometown spot because we were short on time. Big mistake. The selection was not great; the freshness was not there; and we waited and waited and waited for service even though the place was only about 25% full. If you want fresh good-tasting sushi, I advise you look elsewhere.

I walked in for a to go order and placed it at 7:00 pm. An order of rainbow roll and caterpillar roll. 55 minutes later I was waiting and waiting with my two kids and order was never ready. I saw people who walked In after me, sat down, ate and left And we were still waiting. So u can understand my confusion and extreme frustration. I did ask many times and they kept saying 10 minutes. The lady at the counter told me she has been telling the sushi chef to make the order but he refused the make it because the rule is to make order for customers dining in first !!! She also offered me a refund and to cancel the order !!!(huh???) I am 42 years old and I have never heard of such policy in my life. So I called the owner who had her phone number displayed at front counter for angry customers to contact her directly. Hmmmm? I guess this has happened before. Well the owner was apologetic and said she was on her way to the store. Well I ended up finally getting my food. And got a refund on the two rolls. Because I requested it. She gladly gave me the refund and apologized many times. She offered a free meal. But I will never ever ever go back to that place. I was made to feel like a second class citizen. Dealt with most rude employees any one restaurant could possibly have under one roof. If I could give it a negative 10 star, I would. So I actually left the restaurant at 8:10 pm. And had entered and placed order at 7:00 pm.

We’ve been coming to this location for 4 years now. Always a great experience! Sushi is fresh and they always have a great selection of specials on their boards behind the sushi bar. Service has always been with a smile and always has been good. Prices are reasonable. Give them try. Simple surroundings but very good. Plated creatively. Thank you for being our first choice sushi restaurant in the area!

Quality of food has gone down! I had one of my many favorites and this time it was crap! The caterpillar role was awful! The avocado was old, and the eel was soggy. Ugh! Disappointed!

Been coming here for YEARS! It’s close to home ! It has delicious fresh food. It’s been around for a while in Ladera it has had a few different people who work there. I normally do togo orders from here. I have enjoyed the sushi bar as well both are great. Last time I came I called in a order I was quoted I want to say 30 minutes. It was a pretty big order. I showed up right on time. When I showed up I walked straight to the back past the sushi bar. There was somebody else already picking up there togo order. I patiently sat down till he was done. It took maybe 4 minutes. He walked out. I stood up there was a brown hair women with blonde highlights. She’s a beautiful Asian women. She was really nice, I payed for my food gave her a reasonable tip. Just a percent of the bill nothing crazy. It wasn’t ready so I sat back down. She brought me a glass of water an edamame. I was soooo stoked. An in the time it took me to eat that the rest of the food was ready. It was so perfect I went home an enjoyed it all an it was all delicious!. Really just good customer service an thoughtful ness . I think there competing a lot with the new CHOYA across the street. I will say I have been to both. This place is better prices more traditional and better customer service. There great !

Fast. Efficient. Waiter is nice and polite. No idea why the low ratings and reviews. I’d give them 4 stars but will stick to 5 stars because I don’t want this place closing down. Oysters are amazing and the kanpai roll is very good. Personal opinion– the staff is extremely polite. Not sure if they were rude before but right now they are all extremely attentive and nice!

I went here with my grandpa for a quick meal close to home. My grandpa says they make a good sushi roll. I’m not a big sushi eater so I generally get something cooked. I got the Chicken Teriyaki dinner last time. The chicken while good was definitely drenched in teriyaki sauce and as a result was very sweet. They give a very generous amount of chicken also. They do a cute little artsy thing with the orange peels. They have 2 medium size TV’s in the small restaurant on mute. The interior decorating is a little bit plain. But it’s a nice place to go for a quick meal, so I will probably go back and I gave it 3 stars.

Updating my last review. A friend said they had upped their game because of competition across the street. Its was worse than before. No traffic on a Friday night, you know what that means… sushi that is left to sit. Yuck. That was my last chance for Kanpai… do yourself a favor, go across the street. You will pay more, but sushi is not something where you should try and save money with. Quality and Fresh are key… Kanpai has neither.

When we first walked in the place was really warm and sticky. The interior is very dated and felt dirty. I already had a bad feeling when the elderly Korean lady came to give us our menu. Looked like she didn’t want to be there and the Sushi behind the counter just glanced at us then continued on prepping. My son ordered a roll that was wrapped up in Cucumber. After a while,(place was not busy) she told us they didn’t have cucumbers big enough to complete my son’s order. How is that possible when your putting your knife to the cucumber cutting in circles to create a skin for the roll??? They were just lazy and it had just open! I paid too much to just see their frowns and wish they would give better service as they would appreciate if they were the ones who were dining in. I look at the other reviews and I’m glad that a few reviewers were lucky to have experience good service, but for the overall most of us wish it could’ve been better. That space outta go to a business that really appreciates the people walking through their doors. Oh well, It only took one time for me to decide. I usually go a second time to order something else to really see what they can do, but no one really greeted me. Her first words were«What do you want to drink?» You be the judge, but seriously please go where a Japanese restaurant really appreciates your business.

They officially lost our business… not like they care. These people are so lazy they close early, rush you out, or act like they don’t want or need the business. Sad for the owner because im sure rent is extremely high here. They won’t last long with their terrible customer service. Most recently I called to place an order and it was close to closing time so the lady had to really think hard to consider whether or not she’d take a TAKEOUT order. Then when I tried to order the Diablo roll she said no because it would take 20 minutes and they’d be closed by then. Excuse me?! You are open yet unwilling to take an order because you would stay a few extra minutes? I Quickly let her know I’ll take our business elsewhere and placed an order across the street at Choya who was happy and professional about taking our order. See ya never Kanpai!

Ladera Ranch. Not a place one would think of when you say«good Sushi». I stopped in last Friday because I didn’t feel like grabbing Mexican fast food with friends. I wanted what I wanted and I wanted Sushi. In fact, I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi Deluxe. Customer service was friendly and pretty attentive. I have no complaints. Refills and my left overs were even boxed for me. Food was ok. The Miso soup was lacking that strong punch I look for in good soups. The salad was pretty small and though chilled, not very fresh. But the Sushi and Sashimi made up for all of that. Nice good sized cuts. Fairly fresh considering we weren’t on a boat that just caught and cut up the fish. Even the rice ratio was decent and it wasn’t too dry or oily. Like I mentioned earlier — I didn’t walk in expecting excellence … I won’t go so far as to say it was good — I’ll stick with just OK.
