If you have been reading my reviews for years, then you know that I have a weakness for pure lump crab cakes as well as fish and chips. I am also quite rude as I think nothing of peering onto strangers plates as I walk in to be seated and this time was no exception. The guests try to make eye contact or to smile but I am more interested in what they are eating, so much so that after seeing these gorgeous plates filled with two jumbo lump crab cakes that were falling apart as they touched them with their fork, hearing the crunch of the ale battered cod and seeing the fresh hand cut shoestring fries that still had the skins on and were lightly coated with a coarse sea salt, huge piled high sandwiches that took two hands to lift and mouths were opening wide, that I got back up, once seated and I pretended that I needed to reread the specials board right outside of the restaurant. Folks of course were all staring at me as I reentered and once again I peered at their plates, but I knew I just had to have the ale battered cod with the shoestring fries and what an awesome choice it was. The thick pieces of fish were crunchy on the outside, not at all greasy, flaky and tender on the inside. The fresh cut fries were outstanding and reason alone to come back. My sister in law had the two crab cakes along with the fries and she didn’t even offer me a bite! Ha! She loved them and I will try them on my next trip to Lititz. Hubby and brother in law had cheeseburgers, but fries were extra and the cheapo’s decided they would eat some of ours and they did and did and did again! The building the dining room is in dates back to 1764 and is located off to the right of the General Sutter Inn and can only be entered through the lobby of the Inn. The restaurant is not very large and tables are placed too close together, ha people could see what I was eating. In the back of the restaurant is another semi enclosed room which is up a few steps. Our server was very friendly but a bit daft and she kept apologizing with not being familiar with the lunch menu and explained that she normally worked the dinner shift. She seemed to be the only one on and they were getting quite busy and then we did notice another server around 1:00. I had ordered a lemon drop, but she had no clue what it was, so I opted for a glass of wine. My sister in law was going to have a cosmo but when she heard the dismay with the lemon drop she opted for wine. When we asked what kinds they had by the glass, her answer was white, red or rose! I laughed and said don’t you have a wine list? Oh yeah, I’ll bring you one she said and this gal works dinners? The food was outstanding, the dining room was tight but beautiful and the food arrived quickly. On a day trip to Lititz pack a small cooler for all the food you will buy in the gourmet shops in town and the other half of those huge sandwiches that I eyed up, unless you are a big eater or plan on sharing one. Note: those fish and hand cut fries that I drooled over at the Marston’s Bulls Head Public House came from the same kitchen that services the 1764 Restaurant, so I did not miss out after all. Another note: Their lunch menu, is quite extensive with salads, sandwiches and entrees and even though I was quite pleased with what I ordered, they also have a lighter fare menu that was not offered to us and I found it when I came home and went on line. They could have made a lot more money from all of us as it has wonderful additions like lobster bisque(which was not on the lunch menu) and almond crusted raspberry brie served with a fresh warm baguette
