I fell in love with the town of Lititz with the very friendly folks, many walking their very friendly dogs and all the beautiful parks, great museums, vintage homes and buildings. However, it is not polite to walk down the sidewalk peeling back a cupcake liner, then stopping to look you right in the eye, open wide and take a nice big bite! While we were walking I witnessed this time after time and Hansel and Gretel would have been proud of me, I found the Cupcakery, opened their door and announced that I had followed the crumbs! They were not surprised by my outburst and glee so I imagine that it happens quite frequently. The shop is tiny and nestled in between two larger shops, so it would be very easy to miss if it wasn’t for that free sidewalk advertising. My eyes were filled with delight as I checked out each and every gourmet cupcake with a cool plastic ring on top and each thick slice of four to five layered cakes. I must tell you here and now, I have never been a cake lover, I really do not even like it. I am not a fan of sickeningly sweet and even as a child I would ask for Boston cream pies or pineapple upside down cakes, as I got older a good German chocolate was as sweet as I would go. My husband loves cake so for him I make a chocolate fudge cake from scratch with a very rich homemade chocolate butter cream frosting and I do not even have a bite. The cupcake Gods must have been calling to me, because I was bound and determined to check this place out. The cupcakes were large and dense and so full of flavor that I have now become a big fan and I now understand why people pay $ 4.25 for one cupcake! I ordered one slice of the layered dark chocolate cake, mixed with layers of a raspberry cake and a raspberry cream filling, angels are blowing trumpets! The Key lime cupcake was the real thing and oh my heavens was it ever good! The lemon zest was a joy and all of the cupcakes were so moist. The coconut cake was one of my favorites and the dark chocolate and red velvet were so freaking delicious. The spice cupcake was decadent with hints of cinnamon, cloves and I believe cardamom, words do not describe how awesome it was. Now, I wanted nothing more than to walk down the sidewalk, peeling back wrapper after wrapper while gazing into the eyes of onlookers as I took a big bite, but alas we had lunch reservations, so it all had to go home with us. The Cupcakery was kind enough to suggest that we keep our treats there until we were ready to leave. We already have plans to return to Lititz in the future and I already have plans on coming back to The Cupcakery! They have made me learn to love cake and the Key lime is calling my name again, when you buy cupcakes you get a punch out card and once you have bought twelve cupcakes you get one free. I also can not stop thinking about that citrus layer cake that I kept eying up and did not buy, one layer was grapefruit, the others, lemon, lime, orange, oh my! Make her eat cake and they may have just created a monster, I may as well smear them right on my hips. Nah, I need to walk down that sidewalk and introduce others to my new found love.
