We were just back in the area for another round of wine tasting, and Daniel Gehrs was our first stop, cause of course it is! I can confirm, having now had quite a lot of good port, some of it pretty pricey, that Daniel Gehrs, despite being significantly more affordable, still has just mindblowingly good ports. I still agree with my earlier assessment: a couple of the really pricey(100+$) Duoro Ports I’ve tried were better than Gehrs’, but none of the other ports and port-style wines I’ve tried anywhere, including some from Napa and some from Duoro, and a number significantly pricier than his, have been nearly as good.) We tried three this time: his traditional fireside, one single-varietal, and a third one I don’t remember the details of, but they were all fantastic — super complex, just the right amount sweet(pretty sweet but not overpowering), and still only 5 $ to taste the three(they snuck in a taste of one of their table reds, too, which was good, but don’t come here for the table reds, their ports are where they shine.) Only complaint is they no longer sell their Fireside(which I think is their best) in the traditional dessert half-bottle sizes, only in the full 750ml bottles. It’s actually technically a better price: 36 $ for a 750ml as opposed to 20 $ for a 350ml we used to pay, but I still prefer the smaller bottles, especially for dessert wines, since you only drink so much at once. Of course we bought a bottle anyway.

When you decide to go wine tasting 24 hours after completing a marathon and want to be responsible, tasting very little and very politely not swallowing is what goes down in wine town. So, let’s see… my day may have been a bust, but it wasn’t! We had a good time and our very last stop was Daniel Gehrs after my boyfriend spotted their«Port Flights» sign. I’m not a big Port fan, as I’m not a fan of sweet when it comes to wine but my Dad is and I love being able to bring him a bottle of something home when we are in this area. I beelined for the door and asked about what ports they had. I selected a half bottle of their best seller 2012 Fireside Port. The two women working in here were also the sweetest most genuine folks I encountered all afternoon which really sealed the 5STAR review. I’d definitely return in the future based on our brief experience when stopping in, friendly attitudes and delish port. I’m giving my Dad a dark chocolate bar and his bottle and I’m positive he’ll be a happy camper. What can I say??? I’m the type of daughter you’d surely want :)

Very lovely wines in a quaint little winery. The owners care about everyone’s experience and are super sweet. Garden in the back is beautiful for outdoor tastings and there’s a little gift shop inside!

We love this winery. The wines are always a delight, especially the King Port and the red blend Rockers. Mary, the tasting room manager, is awesome! She is incredibly friendly and helpful. The rest of the staff are great, too! And, they are dog friendly!!!

This is a nice little tasting room. The tasting room attendant, Nathan, was very helpful and knowledgable. He made the experience very enjoyable.

Skip the regular wine tasting. Go straight to the Port or White tastings. Only 3 pours for either tastings but totally worth every sip! Oh and they give you dark chocolate bites to go with the Port flight. Heaven!!! There is a nice patio in the back where you can go sit back and if you’re like me, spend some time for the 20% proof Port effect to wear off a bit before proceeding to the next tasting room. LOL!

BESTPORTEVER! Do yourself a favor and try all three of the Port offerings. I guarantee you’ll bring home at least one bottle! This is a lovely tasting room with a relaxing patio out back, lots of wine-related knickknacks to tempt you and a friendly, courteous staff.

The main reason we go taste these award-winning wines in this friendly, very house-like, tasting room in Los Olivos, is to see Clio. Clio is a fat, cross-eyed bitch. I should point out that she’s a cat. Be warned: she is temperamental and has sharp claws. I got the smallest of smallest nicks on my finger and bled like Johnny Depp(as Glen) in Nightmare on Elm Street.

The place was nice. The staff were nice, though read the label verbatim for us when describing the wine. I’m not a cat fan and am kinda allergic so I was a little creeped out by the giant cat they have. However, the cat stayed by itself and left me alone so It wasn’t really in the way. The wines… were there. To me they tasted just overly young and lacked flavor. The Port was the only thing of distinction there and it was good with an interesting balsamic-esque taste. Paired with the chocolate, it was quite nice. If this place stuck to just those ports, I’d probably rate it 3 – 4 stars Overall Rating: C–

I give here 2 stars because I liked some of the wines. The service was not good. The girls who work here didn’t explain the wine at all. They just poured wine and then, they just sat behind the counter looking at us. I almost didn’t buy the wines because of the service. They are lucky because they have a good selection of wines otherwise they won’t be successful.

So, I think this deserves 4.5 stars but half isn’t an option. The ladies are very nice. You can share a tasting and get to keep the glass. We did the standard tasting as well as the port tasting. Had about 12 tastings all together and enjoyed almost every one. We joined the wine club and walked out with 13 bottles. You can say we liked it.

YES! Port tasting!!! YUM! So glad their next door neighbor pointed us to this direction. LOVE: — their $ 10 port tasting — the mascot cross-eyed-gorgeous-kitty that we didn’t get to meet — the friendly staff — the yummy chocolate chips to reset our palette Small store on los olives with a relaxing backyard.

LOVETHISPLACE! We got 2 passes for wine tasting in the Los Olivos/Solvang area, and Daniel Gehr was one of the places that we went to the first day. The list of what we tasted was extensive, much more than the usual 5 at most wine-tasting rooms. Our favorite was the port, so much so that we decided to join the Port Club about a month later. Since this first experience, we have returned a number of times. This is our favorite spot, and we highly recommend Daniel Gehr Wines. The folks in the tasting room are helpful, friendly, and just plain nice. The patio is a lovely place to sit and sip wine. Be sure to ask for Lauren or Mary, who are terrific! Can’t wait to visit again to get some more Fireside Port!!!

Family owned and oh so good! They’re so nice and it’s very reasonable $ 10⁄5 tastes. I always have to have a bottle of their port on my wine rack!

My FAVORITE spot in Los Olivos. Daniel Gehrs is so quaint with SUCH wonderful wine options! The thing that really sets this tasting room apart from the others though is the staff — I’ve stopped in here before simply just to catch up with the lovely people pouring. You can really tell that they are picky about who is hired here, as their pourers have that«special something» about them. Love love love! As far as the wine, I am head over heels for their tawny port. I’m not a big dessert wine person but I could drink this forever! Ask for a tasting if it’s not offered with your flight, and make sure it’s accompanied by those delicious little chocolates they put out. My tasting group always leaves with a bottle or two of this :)

Cute location with a fat wine cat lounging on the counter. We came in on Easter weekend were happy that this location was open on Sunday because most were closed. All the wines were great, especially the Vixen Syrah. The wine maker was visiting for the weekend so we were able to meet her and get out bottle signed.

I am a member. Have been for years. I’m also the mayor. And they know me by name. I love this place and I think they love me right back. Or at least it feels like it. The wines speak for themselves. My favorites have been the Zinfandels — I think I’ve made my way through about four cases of the 05 Zin. Any of their ports are fantastic. Going on a Saturday means that you most likely get to spend some time with Ken. He’s the best. If you like his gun sunglasses, that gift was my handiwork. Mary is great, as is Michelle. And the rest of them. Basically, just go here and enjoy yourself. Please tell them Mike says hi.
