Popped in on a Friday night and our party of 4 was seated right away. Ambience and the service we received from our server was great. All was going well until the food came. My SIL ordered the rib eye(minus the bone) at a medium rare, also known as a warm red center, but it came to the table a bit over done. We notified our server who took the steak back to remedy the situation. Out came the manager with the fixed steak order. She was condescending with my SIL insisting that the first steak that came out was in fact cooked medium rare and that it was to their standards and that it was the fault of the server for not explaining this to us. We were appalled at the manager’s behavior. The prices and ala carte sides implied fine dining, but the behavior of the manager was inappropriate and unprofessional. What ever happened to «the customer is always right»? Clearly since ownership has changed hands, the customer service from the top has dwindled. That incident ruined our dining experience for the evening, and unfortunately ruined Makawao Steakhouse for me and my party. Not sure there will be a return visit for a long time, if ever again.

Great dinner and service. Jesse made the evening even better with his fun attitude and kind demeanor. The bone in ribeye was fantastic along with the beans. A couple of us had this great steak. All of the meals were extremely good. Deserts were very tasty. Jesse and his crew went above and beyond and would recommend everyone give then a try.

This place is very different from anywhere on the island. You will definitely feel like you are at a country steakhouse. Not only is the steak a meeting but a side of potatoes and you got a great meal.

I’ve been here twice. The food tastes cheap and is way too greasy,(that coat your throat kind of greasy). I will never go back.

We traveled from Kaanapali to take in the Makawao Friday Night Town Party and to meet a friend from Kula. We weren’t sure about eating at a steakhouse since two of the 5 of us don’t eat meat but gave it a try after looking at the menu. Several of us chose the salad bar since it was a great price! We were happy to see the caesar salad had its own bowl as that salad alone, at another restaurant, would have cost much more. Among our dinner choices: Filet of Beef Tenderloin, two had the Seafood Special, Ahi, which was prepared rare but I asked for medium and it was done to my liking. Another had Jidori Chicken and one the Fish & Chips(Mahi Mahi). Every meal was delicious with ample servings. They also include bread on each table and a pot of beans. Our service was fantastic. Jonathon gave a pleasant welcome, a clear description of the menu choices, added a little humor, and was certainly attentive without hovering(not always easy to do!). Thanks Jonathon — you made our experience that much better! Though the dessert choices looked inviting, we were full from the fabulous meal so didn’t get sweet treats. Definitely recommend this restaurant. The drive is not that far if you don’t hit the traffic leaving the west side of the island. This would be a great place to go on the way back from a day spent in south Maui.

Bit of a drive from our condo at Kihei, but well worth it. Probably the best prime rib(14 oz) I ever had. Medium rare, perfect, melts in mouth, seasoned just right. Ordered sides of mashed potatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, and fried calamari rings. Everything was delicious, and our server, Jordy was wonderful. Nice, comfortable atmosphere in a small upscale downtown setting with small shops, galleries, arts, etc. Parking a bit tough, but its around.

Why Five Stars? They Honor their Reservations. Bar makes Darn Tasty Cocktails(Although it take a while to get them) Wonderful. Fresh salad bar with real food on it that is neat and well cared for. Sensitive server that was kind to us to notice my date was uncomfortable and made a adjustment to dining area without her even asking. Tender steaks that were cooked to ordered and were super tasty. What really set above other places I been too recently is the Ohana feeling runs thought the place. This is No Hole in the Wall but sit also No Celebrity Chef joint either just bunch of «Folks out for a Holiday Dinner».(Perfect No Way but Who wants perfect away-way).

Food was delicious! Our waitress was great… And the drinks were wonderful. We sat in the lounge area as a party of 7 and everyone was pretty pleased with their meals. Salad bar was small but satisfied some greens on your plate.

I am thrilled about the salad bar, which is just standard and fairly priced, as well as the lamb shank dinner, which is warming, rustic, and herby. I am disappointed that the once revered calamari steak pupu has been replaced by the a-typical fried rings. Sadly, the fried oyster starter is also lack luster… the batter holds too much grease and sits in the stomach like a bomb waiting to go off. The steaks and prime rib are fine, but with all side items being ala carte, I would expect better execution for the prices. Fine dining it ain’t, but with a warm cozy environment invoking memories of childhood celebratory dinners, a friendly staff, and for lack of better options in Makawao town, I will be back for the lamb shank and salad bar.

First off I have to say, this place has some of the most hospitable staff. It was very busy on a Sunday night, we didn’t have reservations, but were seated in less than 10 min. Our server apologized ahead of time that they were a little backed up in the kitchen, but it didn’t seem any longer than an average wait time at any other restaurant. The cocktails were very good and very reasonably priced. I enjoyed my steak, and I’m sure I’ll be back. Worth a detour on the way back from Hana or after sunset on Haleakala when everyone’s trying to figure out where to go for dinner. The ambiance reminded me of being near Tahoe or Yosemite, I almost expected it to be snowing outside when we left.

Makawao steak house never disappoints… ever. My parents eat here once a week and sometimes invite me if I’m good. They seat us way in the back because we are a rowdy bunch. If you have a big group ask to be seated in the way back because it’s more intimate for your group by the fireplace and you don’t have to worry about disrupting any other guest. Food– the food here is amazing. I have ordered pretty much everything here and I’ve yet to find anything that disappoints. Well I take that back… the beans that come with the steaks are not very good so I usually sub that for the awesome baked potato. The prime rib is a giant slab of mouthgasm. Honestly, even 3 days later when I mixed it with fried rice it was still tender and juicy. The baby back ribs are about 5 lbs of meat. Huge portions but so good that you’ll eat it all. In conclusion, if you haven’t checked this hidden gem out, do it! It is worth the drive. A place that is actually worth the price which I can’t say for a lot of restaurants in Maui.

Let’s start my reviews from recent trip to Maui, with a high note. Though a drive of half hour from Kihei to a one hour drive from Lahina, this place is worth the trip. The service and food are very good, and it is a great value for Maui. My wife and I enjoyed the New York Cut, which were Grass Fed Beef raised just a few miles away there on Maui. Very Good. $ 22 as of this date. $ 3 Cesar Salad Bar. We all walked out«full» and the steak dinners averaged less than $ 25 per person. It’s worth it to go, just to try the Organic Grass Fed Maui beef. I used to live on Maui. This is a eating destination that is so much better than the tourist joints. Hotels will not tell visitors about this place, because visitors will start to venture out of the high priced tourist areas.

I was in Maui back in February and I was looking for a good steak place on the island. Of course I went to my trusty Unilocal app… I saw the positive Unilocal reviews for this restaurant and decided to try it. Also, of the numerous times I’ve been to Maui I had never ventured to this part of the island. After taking a little drive(climbing the hills of the Maui countryside…), what seem like forever, I finally reached the restaurant. It’s located on the main street of a quaint little town… it had the feel of an «old time“country ranch type restaurant. I had the Ribeye steak and it was good! My wife had the NY steak and she thought it tasted good as well. It wasn’t necessarily the best steaks we’ve had… but never the less delicious. Service was acceptable(but not overly friendly as I usually come to expect for Hawaii). Parking can be a challenge especially if it gets busy. Overall we enjoyed our dining experience. If you want to try something different from the typical restaurants located in the Lahaina or Kaanapali areas(& you don’t mind a little drive) give this place a try.

Great family steakhouse in Makawao, off the beaten track but worth the drive from Sprecklesville. Karissa did an excellent job as our server, especially since MSH was crowded with several tables seated at the same time so the kitchen was a little backed up. She kept our drinks filled and got our onion soup out first even though we added it to our order several minutes after our initial order. The onion soup comes out with a flaky pastry crust on top and has a rich salty flavor. The fish special was tasty, seared and encrusted with cardamom on top of a big salad. The grilled vegetable entrée was a good size portion of various veggies over quinoa. The filet was tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. Sides of mashed potatoes and parmesan polenta were good, Good value for good size portions.

3÷11÷2015: Referred by a local resident in Makawao, our dinner this evening of a filet and 12oz ribeye were perfectly cooked med rare as ordered. Waitress Karise was attentive yet not bothersome, great job! Calamari was fantastic with both sauces. Steak dinners are served with bread and the Makawao own style baked beans. The beans«are» different but very good. The bread needs a lot of improvement. The décor is rustic(ie not fancy), kinda more family friendly. I’d go here before going to any chain steak house.

Definitely a fun experience. Steaks were good, it’s not a Mastro’s so don’t get snooty people! The salad bar is tiny but for 3 $ it’s so worth it because it’s AYCE Cesar Salad which is made with their homemade dressing! The dressing was delicious, on the salty side so add more greens and ask for lemon to balance out to the salty anchovy taste. I ordered the French Onion soup because it looked cool, however, it was pretty salty so I wouldn’t recommend this. Ribeye steak was the special of the night and it was cooked to perfection. Mushrooms and asparagus as sides were a treat. Servers were all very hospitable & attentive. **Make reservations if you can because it does get busy around the dinner rush time.

Makawao Steakhouse is a classic old style island ranch restaurant on Maui. OMG this gem is out of the way but worth the trip to Makawao… The steak house does not resemble any stuffy steak house you’ve ever been in Hawaii, it’s kinda a homey ranch style joint. The food is fresh and only serves high quality local beef & seafood. I have the ribeye, it’s the steak you’ve desired all your life. Local Hawaiian beef is a pleasure to grind… The Short ribs are quality with the meat falling off the bone. I can taste it in my mind already… Start off with a salad bar it’s only $ 3 extra and local homemade salad dressings are delightful. I cannot say enough about this adventure in flesh. So just take the drive and make an evening of the flesh. Dine local and u will be rewarded.
