Went to Mammoth this weekend and stopped off for lunch before gong skiing. We had a great sandwich and soup. When leaving on Sunday we stopped back and picked up another sandwich that we had for dinner on the way home. One was turkey the other roast beef and both were real and cut in front of us. In addition the bread was great and the selection of fresh veggies on the sandwich was also great. Enjoy!

The sandwiches are TERRIFIC. I definitely recommend breakfast or lunch there. Schat’s is s a poorly kept secret as there is always a mob scene when we’re driving home. My biggest desire is for them to PLEASE take phone and/or online take-out orders. Their website says that they take phone orders for take-out. However, when I called last, I was told they were too busy. When I said, «It’s always busy,» the woman said«not like this!» When we stopped in, it was the usual Sunday/Monday drive home busy. :)

good service, good food, the staff was very friendly and the sandwich was delicious. there is a deli side and a bakery side. I didnt have the pleasure of indulging in the bakery side but hope to next time I am in the area.

There is something for everyone here, pastries, cookies, donuts, gelato, candy, bread, deli. I go for the pastries and they do not disappoint! We stayed at the Creekside Inn next door, that might not have been a good idea, one or two more stops in here than I should have made but when in Rome… I can’t help myself. Definitely worth a stop in if you’re just driving thru town and want to satisfy that sweet tooth or just get a great sandwich! They have dining in and outside. Very friendly service and don’t let the lines scare you, they are quick and they replenish everything all day.

One cold morning, I decided I wanted a sandwich. I found Schat’s Bakery on Unilocal and decided, «why not?» I was not disappointed. I ordered a turkey sandwich on the sheepherder’s bread with a smidge of mayo, sprouts, and tomato. The bread was incredibly fluffy and I was able to order dark meat turkey. This place doesn’t have your typical deli turkey meat. They actually had a whole oven roasted turkey that they were cutting meat off of(that’s a huuuuuuge plus in my book). When I bit into the sandwich, first bite, reminded me of this sandwich place I used to go to in Berkeley(unfortunately, it is now closed). This place reminded me of the good old times at UCB with my friends. Oh, and with the sandwich you get a chocolate chip cookie. I wasn’t a huge fan of the cookie. It was really crispy. Some of my friends like the crispy cookies, I’m a soft cookie fan. Everyone at Schat’s was really nice and were willing to answer any and all questions we had. Overall, good little place to stop by for a delicious sandwich.

Worst vanilla latte on the planet. Should have known when the double espresso shots came from a button being pushed.

Schat’s Schat’s! Schat’s! Everybody Schat’s! This is pretty much the concensus regarding what to do when in Mammoth and who am I to break tradition. I thought I was super trendy and knew about this secret place but I was wrong. On the last day of our Snowboarding trip I asked the group if we should grab breakfast before heading out and I was ready to recommend Schat’s but before I had the chance my friend said I order 2 pies yesterday we are going to Schat’s. So don’t argue just roll with it. Major fail on my part. This review is for sandwiches only. I went in for breakfast or lunch but ended getting a half soup and half sandwich. The soup was okay. I guess you can’t have good clam chowder everywhere and the free cookie was hard. But man that was a huge sandwich! I think half sandwich is a joke. The joke is you can only finish half of it. I ordered a roast beef with everything plus avacado and I ate the whole thing but I didn’t leave room for dessert. Sad face but at least the sandwich was great. Easily one of the top sandwiches I have had from a deli. Seeing a fresh sourdough go in to the bread cutting machine is a beautiful thing. It’s just too bad the calm chowder was just okay. Maybe I will go with the beef veggie next time. I got in line for pastries and an oj but I gave up after a few minutes. I wanted to beat the snow storm and didn’t want my group to wait. I didn’t feel like waiting for 1 or 2 items in a long slow moving line. I don’t have a big sweet tooth and I convinced myself I didn’t need a big éclair or cream puff. It doesn’t fit in my goal to get fit and that it might not taste great taking it togo and eating it 6 hours later. So good bye pastries I was concurred by the half sandwich. I did sneak a small bite of a friend’s bear claw and it was bomb. I highly recommend going here. Next time I will allow more time in the schedule to browse and try something. I’m not sure if they give sample but that would be nice. I will be sure to order a pie at least a day in advance. Mmmm pie. I will be back again.

Its weird because this bakery has an awesome rep but when i went, my sandwich was soggy badly presented and the deli looked dirty im not sure what happened ? Also our parents ordered a lot of bakery goods from here over christmas and they ALL came down with gastro right after eating

Finally got around to trying this beloved local fav. Traditionally, people came here for the famous cheesy bread(which is still tasty). These days, they come for the carbs and stay for even more carbs. Sometimes, they even order a sandwich with their bread! You enter through a bake shop, and you can either dine in or get a sammie to go in the back. I ordered a couple of sandwiches and was a bit underwhelmed. I could see that they use good ingredients(the roast ham looked awesome). But the sandwich build was total amateur hour – a haphazard stacking of ingredients without much care or thought. I asked for my sandwiches to be wrapped in halves, but that didn’t happen. They were wrapped in loose balls of plastic wrap that left the ingredients sloppy and messy(Yeah, and throw the pickle spear in there to add messy insult to injury, thanks). But at least they tossed in a free cookie, which was pretty good(after I got rid of the wad of plastic wrap, that is…)

I have never been to the actual store but my relatives who go up to mammoth every year for ski bring back loaves of the heavenly cinnamon bread. The bread has swirls of cinnamon sugar goodness and large chunks of walnut spread throughout the bread. On top, there is a glaze for a little bit of added sweetness. Slice and put it in the microwave for a few seconds or make french toast with it… absolutely amazing. You have to go early or else they sell out!

Extremely popular, so get here before the crowd. With our dog, we grabbed an outdoor table while wife went in to order sandwiches. Al in all a good experience.

Very hardworking staff in the back. Only issue was they ran out of things so easily. The small soup is $ 5.95 and the large is $ 6.95 but two days in a row they were out. Anyways the sandwiches here are killer, everything is fresh: freshly carved turkey, roast beef, and pastrami. We had the roast beef and pastrami and personally I loved the pastrami the most, the guy that worked there really packed true sandwiches and was so nice while the women were whatever and weren’t very attentive but hey I guess when they are busy it’s hard. We got an array of baked goods from them as well the chilli cheese bread is as good as it gets, but it’s more like chilli and cheese and by chilli they mean peppers. Definitely a great bread even though it’s a little pricey.

A lot smaller than the original location in Bishop but this place is very well stocked. They didn’t have as many selections of breads here as the one in Bishop did though but they did have a sit in café area which you can enjoy your time at. We ordered a birthday cake from here & it was ready by the time we had requested it but it took forever to pay because they only had 1 person taking care of everything from cash register to orders.

Sandwich bar! Great idea as long as there is more than one person making the sandwiches. We each ordered a half a sandwich — each sandwich is made to order other the meat cut right from the big turkey or roast beef. All sandwiches include a pickle and a big cookie.

I came in for a quick bfast sandwich and coffee to go, but did not see any bfast sandwich options on the menu… even in the«sandwich shop» section there was only menu listing deli sammie options. I am an americano coffee drinker and was disappointed to see that was not even an option on their coffee menu, which also seemed to be on the pricey side. The bakery is legit, however, and I did enjoy the biscotti, chocolate croissant, and mexican tea cookies, but walking out having paid $ 8 for those was not what I expected. I was glad I checked the place out, but it turned out to not be what I was looking for.

3.5 stars I skipped the bread this time around and concentrated all of my energy of their selection of baked goods. I ordered a dozen of their shortbread cookies in different varieties for my mom. This was a whopping $ 15.50 for a dozen. Sheesh. I also ordered a spinach + feta cheese croissant, as well as a breakfast croissant(bacon, egg + cheese) because it was buy one and get one free($ 6.95). The croissant was a little stale. Flakey, but not that flakey. Pretty good, but only if you get the BOGO deal. Again, I think Schat’s is worth checking out especially if you happen to find yourself in this area. Good place to grab sandwiches and drinks.

Who knew they have multiple locations!!! Yeah! We can right before closing, they said they close whenever, fluctuates. We grabbed éclair & berry crème puff. Crème puff with chocolate & strawberry kiwi was $ 5 and didn’t seem very fresh. Sadz. We got the buy 2 get one free pastries: cherry Danish, apricot & berry Danish. All pastries were very tasty. They are a little market with meats, breads(chili cheddar, monkey pull apart) fresh squeezed oj. Cookies, dessert, savory croissants, so many choices. Also dine in option connected! Good stuff!

Schat’s is like a fairytale building plopped right into Mammoth Lakes. It’s a cute little place with a quaint exterior that adds to its charm. Friends told me to come here while in Mammoth, so I stopped by on a Sunday mid-afternoon. There were about four other people in the front shop and one table taken up in the back. Everything seemed very quiet, which meant we were helped quickly. The employees were nice, but not overly engaging. There were little display cases of samples out and I am a sucker for samples. The ciabatta is TODIEFOR. Dip it in the proffered balsamic vinaigrette or the jalapeño vinaigrette. Let’s just take a moment to truly honor this combo… What to choose, though, what to choose?! This place has everything including jams, gelato, chocolate, cookies, bread, pastries, and cakes. I love that you could take a large group here and everyone is guaranteed to find a sweet treat. I had the almond bear claw. I absolutely love bear claws. This one had a moist, decently-thick middle layer of almond pasty goodness. The outside edges were dry though. I also tried the churro. It was thick and doughy and the cinnamon sugar clung nicely to its ridged edges. It would have tasted a bit better warmed up. My sisters had the hazelnut truffle(said it was creamy but tasteless) and mocha rum truffle(said it was smooth and bitter with a sharp aftertaste). They take credit cards, so purchase your puffs and donuts and loaves, my friends! After you get your little goodie in its white paper bag, take it out front to eat in the sunshine or sit at the tables in the back of the restaurant. There are also restrooms in the back with powdered soap. An unnecessary fact perhaps, but I was intrigued by its strange texture. This place was way better than any confection you’d find at the grocery store, but the pastries were slightly dry. Maybe they’re better and fresher in the morning? I’d be down to try again.

Leveraging the popularity of the Schat’s bakery restaurant down the road in Bishop, this location makes a solid effort. But lightning doesn’t strike twice, it seems, and despite all the right moving parts, the Mammoth Lakes store can’t quite get the job done. On a recent trip, we mobbed with 7 adults and three children. We stood in line at the sandwich counter, ordered assorted roast beef and turkey breast sandwiches, on various breads(Ciabatta, sourdough roll, wheat berry…) Alas, they just weren’t exceptionally tasty. I wanted so bad for this to be as good as the Bishop shop but it wasn’t. Self service fountain was a plus. The roasted turkey leg was dry and overcooked… Stupid poultry fears have prompted the overcooking of all birds. Seating was first come first served, and we lucked out with a big table, although it was by the counter line… Causing guests to ogle our orders and be annoying. I’d go back to give it another shot I suppose. But I’d need to be hungry.
