I am not a picky eater and normally enjoy sushi. I live close and had never gone in, and finally did. I was not impressed by the sushi, although the staff was nice. The manhattan roll was terribly bland and not good. The California roll was not good either, the sushi tasted almost dried out. I wanted to like the place since its so close to my house. Fusion sushi is better unfortunately.

Katsu used to be an excellent sushi place with friendly and efficient staff. But those days are long gone. We went over the weekend and had an absolutely miserable experience. The service was awful, everything so slow and simply no attention to us or the other guests. The food was also tired and not fresh. We then learned why: Katsu is closing it’s doors soon and going out of business. So they just don’t care anymore. Just avoid this place and wait to see what opens up in this location. There are many excellent sushi restaurants around town, so save yourself the agony of this experience.

This place is what it is – 3 stars. Nothing was terrible but nothing was great either. If you’re desperate for sushi and in the area, then I would check it out, but wouldn’t go out of my way. They do have a decent happy hour tho.

Good for quick japanese fix. Conveniently located next to a little public parking structure. The meters take credit card. Had the Soba(cold) Texas Heat Roll Both were pretty good. But my mouth was really dry after eating the soba… maybe there was too much msg in the soba dipping sauce.

Katsu! is a great local Sushi bar with a comfortable vibe and relaxed atmosphere. Having been a member of the Katsu! family for the past 7 years, I can without question say that Katsu! is among the best in the South Bay. They have an awesome Happy Hour from 5:30 — 7:00 seven days a week and a super friendly staff. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar for fastest service, but the lower areas are great for larger groups as well. Some can’t miss appetizers: ***shishito peppers ***dynamite mussels ***stuffed jalapenos ***CASHONLYDURINGHAPPYHOUR

Katsu is a great locals Sushi spot– Katsu himself is always there and is SO loyal and nice to his customers– you will see a lot of the same regulars here because the sushi is FRESH and it is a very casual easy place to go! If you are looking for a casual nice spot for a fresh sushi dinner I HIGHLY suggest Katsu! Their HH goes late on Monday nights– 2.50 hand rolls– very generous portions– Only issue is parking but there is a lot across the street and parking up on Rosecrans Enjoy!

Stopped for lunch and had a combo mini chirashi bowl + soba noodle bowl. They give a lot of fish for such a small bowl, which I very much appreciate. It’s a pretty good value for their lunch specials. I can’t say anything for their dinner prices though. Parking can be found on the street on the parking lot across the street. Service was pretty good on this very slow Thursday lunch.

Love their Chef Omakase! Their $ 28 Chef Kimagure Sushi Omakase comes with 9 pieces of nigiri and tuna rolls, salad, seafood savory egg custard, miso soup, and dessert! Their $ 50 Omakase comes with additional kitchen food such as a grilled sea bass! Both are very reasonable and everything tastes great! The key is to sit at the counter and communicate with the chefs, Katsu-san and Kin-san. They’ll be happy to drink with you:)

The ladies that work here are really really nice. They put up with all forms of flirting, joking and general tomfoolery from their loud drunked customers. But the service is slow and seating is limited. The main reason for my 3 star rating is simply this: the sushi just isn’t that good. The portions seem to be on the small side, which would be forgivable if the nagiri and rolls tasted fresher or brighter. Unfortunately, it was all sort of limp and bland. I would suggest Pisces Sushi down the street on Highland for a more satisfying sushi/roll experience.

Very good value and good price for lunch special. I tried chirashi bowl with couple of appetizers. The fish wasn’t the best that I’ve ever had but everything was quite decent. Tasty and fresh.

Attention! Folks! This restaurant has been underrated for some reason. It is way much better than an average 3.5 stars, it deserves a 4-star at least. Ambiance: Bright green color on the wall, sushi bar areas were more popular, about 8~10 seats. They also have large tables on the lower layer of the establishment, a bit darker and good for big groups. Service: Waitresses were very patient with your ordering, and attentive for bringing you food and drinks, speaking English and Japanese. The owner Katsu is a very interesting guy, originally from Okinawa, as he described himself dark skin and big eyes. Food: A lot creative cuisines. If you were quite new here, ask the waitress to give you some recommendations. Generally I would recommend a few popular ones. Crispy Spicy Tuna — ***** as beautiful as a flower, deep fried rice patty topped with spicy tuna, avocado, masago and jalapeño, crispy and tasty, highly recommend Ika-Yaki — **** grilled squid, very fresh and tasty with lemon juice and spicy mayo Hamachi-Kama — *** grilled yellowtail collar, original taste, or you can put lemon juice or dip in the soy sauce. Red Snapper — **** fresh sushi, a bit salty, don’t mix with any soy source or wasabi, just taste the original flavor Scallop Roll — ** light taste Price: Quite decent price for the food quality you can get here. Average $ 25 per person, plus any drinks, like sake, you might order. Parking: Street parking wasn’t very difficult to find, 2-hr limit until 9 pm usually, plus it’s only two blocks away from the beach. PS: Not the end of the story yet. Met a lovely couple with an impression of their unspoken consensus, and learned the secret of getting along well with each other for long. Be Honest, and Be Yourself!

They have a C… Its normally good sushi, but they have a C. I just think people need to know this. They hide the C behind their open door so its not noticeable which is against the health code regulations, I believe, because it has to be displayed in a visible location. However I will say more. I’ve alway enjoyed this place and have been coming for years. The fish has always tasted really fresh. Yes its been crowded and the one waitress(who I think is the wife of owner) has never been super friendly. They used to have a B, which is pretty bad for a sushi restaurant. I handled it because the fish was always good. However now that they have C it freaks me out. If they clean their shit up and get an A I will definitely come back. But until then people should stop coming and let them feel the consequences of whatever health code violations they have committed.

Pretty cheap for happy hour. The handrolls are really good, but other than that… nothing too amazing. Also, the restaurant is really small and you have to find parking on the street or pay for parking in a lot nearby. I’d definitely come back ONLY for happy hour. $ 2 handrolls!

It gets really crazy in here especially on a Saturday night! They only have two waitresses working and both of them basically do everything. Tables get backed up on ordering quite easily. I saw one table ask the waitress if they could order, many minutes later after watching her go around to a bunch of other tables she finally got to theirs. They definitely need a third waitress! The atmosphere here is pretty much loud and cramped. Don’t expect an intimate dinner, and be prepared to not use your inside voice. Haha there’s no way anyone would be able to hear you at all then. They are located on a hill and have three distinctly separated areas. When you first walk in there’s the sushi bar, below is a room with one large tables and a few smaller ones, the last room is regular seating and is probably the best as you get to look outside and you aren’t crowded in next to the large table. The sushi they had here was all fresh and of good quality. Some of the rolls were a bit loose though and falling apart. GRILLEDSQUID Yummy yummy yummy, squid was cooked well with good flavor and some nice char on it. Though the spicy mayo dipping sauce could’ve used a bit more spice to it. SPICYTUNAONTOPOFCRISPYRICE Delicious!!! I love this dish. It came out in a round circle that was cut like a pie. Some heat to this dish too which I liked. Crispy on the outside, soft inside, then the spicy tuna and the slice of jalapeño on top with some sriracha. Also they had some kind of sauce on the dish that we mopped up. TEXASHEATROLL The waitress warned us that this was a bit spicy upon ordering, but it was absolutely the perfect level for me. I’d say I can eat above average spicyness though. Just enough heat to enhance but not so much it put my mouth on fire. PHILLYROLLANDYELLOWTAILROLL Solid rolls with fresh fish in the middle. Can’t really say much about these two classics. We used a certificate to cut down our bill, but one thing I noticed is that they added a 20% tip onto our bill. For certificates it says that 18% tip will be added… not 20%. I don’t know if that’s standard practice or not for this place, I certainly didn’t like them adding 20% since they really had mediocre service. Slow to take our order and dishes away, but the food came really quickly. So not sure if I’ll be coming back here, pretty good sushi, loved the spicy tuna on top of crispy rice, but the service isn’t very good at all and it’s pretty loud in here.

It was hard to find but so glad we found it! The service was good and the Happy Hour prices were great. The fish on the sushi was fresh and generous. We especially liked the Manhattan Roll. We’ll be back!

3.5STARS Katsu is another cute little lunch joint by work. I brought co-workers here and everyone seem pleased each time. We usually park across the street in the structure with meters. Lunch combos here are excellent, especially if you get the Sea Bass Bento Box of the Day, you get a lot of bang for your buck at $ 12.95. The sea bass is a nice size grilled with sweet teriyaki sauce and it comes with your choice of California or Spicy Tuna rolls, salad with sesame dressing and shrimp & veggie tempura. Their Chirashi is pretty fresh and tasty too(it’s assorted fresh sashimi on top of rice and also comes with soup & salad). The Green Tea Crème Brulee and Chocolate Soufflé is absolutely divine:-)

This place is really good. I dropped by for lunch on Tuesday and it wasn’t busy so I took a seat at the sushi bar. I ordered the crispy spicy tuna and a Manhattan roll. The crispy spicy tuna is their best seller, per their menu, and understandably so. It’s crispy rice with spicy tuna and sliced jalapenos on top drizzled with ponzu sauce. Amazingly good! It’s worth ordering. The Manhattan roll was very good too. It’s a California roll with sliced salmon on top with bento flakes and sliced red onion on top. Yum! Everything tasted fresh, which is great. Service was super friendly. Parking was metered street and there is a parking structure that’s metered too. There was some parking that didn’t have meetings on Rosecrans past the place going towards the beach but it’s very little so your best bet is just getting a metered stall. Also note that the entrance for this place is on Rosecrans. It’s right on the corner of Rosecrans and Highland Ave. on the same block as Sandos Subs(another nom nom place), just a couple of doors down.
